Session Outline •Explain that 6 farm animals (teddies) have escaped from the local farm and are hiding in their outdoor environment (Explain boundaries). 4 animals (woodland animals teddies) that live naturally in their outdoor environment are also hiding and so the children have got to decide whether they live their naturally or have escaped from the farm. • The children have got to work with a partner to find all of the farm animal teddies to return them to the farm. • When they find a farm animal teddy, they can pick one picture card of that animal (between their pair) from its basket & then place it on their farm clip board sheet using the velcro. • When they find an animal that lives naturally in the outdoors, they should leave their picture card alone as it is already in its habitat. • It doesn’t matter if they don’t find them all & they may ask adults/ friends for help. Emphasise how to work with a partner by keeping together, taking turns & talking. Children to come back together when finished/ 3 whistles. Go through answers together. Differentiation: HA- Can write the animal names & count their cards. LA- Can name the animals verbally & sort correctly. Extension: Children to say the initial sound for each of the animals or practise writing the animal using phonic knowledge. Children to count the farm/ woodland animals & find how many altogether/ how many more farm animals than woodland creatures etc. Lesson Objectives Children will be able to sort creatures into those they may find on a farm & those they will not. Resources farm animal teddies x 6; woodland animal teddies x 4; matching farm & woodland animal picture cards with velcro on reverse (enough for one per pair) (scroll down); clipboards; Sheets with velcro patches for the 6 farm animal cards, scroll down. Key Vocabulary Farm; woodland; environment; habitat; animal. Risk Assessments Generic Site RA. Top Tips • You may alter this theme for any session objective. E.g. polar animals, carnivores, mammals, etc. • You could make an A4 laminated sheet with 6 boxes with velcro in each for the children to stick their picture cards to in pairs. This is sometimes better than collecting in a bag as it enables them to see their choices without loosing them. •You may wish to make a similar sheet with the pictures cards stuck on under the related teddy (in its hiding place), or just place the cards in a basket.
