NOW AVAILABLE IN PAPERBACKSecond Suns is the unforgettable story of how two men with a shared dream are changing the world, one pair of eyes at a time. In this transporting book, David Oliver Relin shines a light on the work of Himalayan Cataract Project Co-Founders Drs. Sanduk Ruit and Geoff Tabin who have dedicated their lives to eradicating preventable blindness through the Himalayan Cataract Project. Relin takes us from impoverished plywood operating tables in the farthest reaches of Nepal to state-of-the-art surgical centers to village hospitals in Africa where these driven men are restoring sight – and hope – to patients around the world. — RANDOM HOUSE

2016 ANNUAL REPORT 1
Dear Friends,
It is with great pleasure that we share this 2016 Annual Report with you. Together with our partners, in 2016 we provided 130 training opportunities and reached over 1.1 million people with screening and basic treatment — including 97,700 sight-restoring surgeries. Your assistance made these successes possible.
Twenty-two years ago, we set out to deliver high-quality eye care in remote areas of the world, where it is most needed, with local ophthalmic teams that we have trained and equipped. Thanks to you and our remarkable network of collaborating institutions and individuals, we have supported the examination and treatment of over 7.3 million people and provided more than 624,000 sight-restoring surgeries in this time. We have our sights set on continued growth and expanded impact.
In 2016, all of our major partners increased the amount of eye care they provided over previous periods, and we continue to increase the number of ophthalmic trainees that we support each year. In Nepal, our flagship partner — Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology — not only rebounded from the devastating 2015 earthquakes, but exceeded previous performance, increasing the number of clinical and training programs, and continued to make its mark on eye care in South Asia through programs in Bhutan, Myanmar, India and Indonesia. In Ethiopia, working with the Ministry of Health and 9 implementing partners nationwide, our partners provided over 47,000 surgeries, with 25% of these cases provided in outreach settings. Together, we worked to reduce the backlog of ~600,000 Ethiopians needlessly blind from cataract. In Ghana, we are expanding our partnerships, increasing the number of surgeries provided through outreach cataract events and working to strengthen ophthalmology residency training programs.
By working with our tremendous network of partners and strengthening capacity at the local level, we believe that we can eliminate avoidable blindness and that we can do so within our lifetime. We cannot thank you enough for the support you have provided to make our work possible. On behalfof all of the Board, Staff and program partners, thank you.
With gratitude,
Geoffrey Tabin and Job Heintz

2 HIMALAYAN CATARACT PROJECT
WHO WE HELPHimalayan Cataract Project: Restoring Sight, Changing LivesMore than 39 million people worldwide suffer from blindness – but most don’t have to. More than half are blind
due to cataracts, and close to 90% live in developing countries. The Himalayan Cataract Project (HCP) brings
life-changing eye care to people in underserved areas of the world and trains local personnel to build sustainable
eye care systems for the future.
In 2016, HCP and its partners provided screenings for more than 1.1 million individuals and performed over 97,000 surgeries throughout seven countries in Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. We also directly supported 130 training opportunities – an increase of 67% over 2015.

Building Capacity through Training and Infrastructure Investments The Himalayan Cataract Project (HCP) works
in Myanmar, through its partnership with the
Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology, to support
the Yangon Eye Hospital (YEH). HCP supports
surgical workshops that provide care and hands-on
skills transfer; training of YEH sub-specialists; and
procurement of sub-specialty and other infrastructure
investments through USAID’s American Schools
and Hospitals Abroad (ASHA) program.
• In November, HCP co-founder Dr. Sanduk Ruit led
a team from Tilganga in conducting two cataract
surgical campaigns, one at YEH and the other in
Phyu. Over the course of 10 days, the surgical team
provided 542 cataract surgeries. Skills transfer
took place during the campaigns as well, with 19
local ophthalmologists participating in surgery
and another 20 learning from observing.
March 2016 Myanmar
ASIA MYANMAR
• YEH provided 1,054 cataract surgeries through outreach as compared to the 704 in 2015, an almost 50%
increase within just 1 year. This shows a significant increase in the provision of eye care to individuals in
rural areas who would normally not travel to the tertiary hospital in Yangon for treatment.
• YEH ophthalmologist Dr. Wah Wah Lwin capped off her sub-specialty training with a retina observership
at the John A. Moran Eye Center at the University of Utah. Since the completion of her fellowship, YEH
has seen a 24.6% increase in annual retinal surgeries.
• HCP participated in the drafting of the first of its kind National Eye Health Plan in Myanmar in
collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Agency for the Prevention of
Blindness (IAPB), The Fred Hollows Foundation (FHF), The Helen Keller International (HKI), Myanmar’s
Ministry of Health and local stakeholders. Implementation of the plan will begin with a demographic
survey for which HCP has pledged to contribute roughly 10% of the budget.

Expanding Our ReachIn 2016, with support from HCP, our partners
increased their outreach cataract surgical numbers
by 41% over 2015. HCP is currently partnered with
10 institutions across Ethiopia and the Federal
Ministry of Health to provide high-quality, low-cost
cataract surgery to patients who otherwise have no
access to eye care services. Our goal is to expand
partnerships and increase outreach in a continued
effort to address the backlog of cataract blindness
in Ethiopia, estimated at 600,000.

USAID Child Blindness Program
HCP secured a grant from USAID’s Child Blindness Program to increase access to high-quality care
to children in Ethiopia through its partnership with Menelik II Hospital in Addis Ababa. Support
includes providing specialized training for the child eye health team and comprehensive eye care
service for 120 children.
Ethiopia Eye Bank
In 2016, the Eye Bank successfully collected 235 corneas for transplant. In April 2016, HCP sponsored an
in-country training of 8 cornea surgeons to learn new surgical techniques for performing corneal transplants
(DSEK). Since 2011, HCP has been working in partnership with the Ethiopian Ministry of Health, SightLife
and Orbis International to increase efficiency of the Eye Bank.
“ The Himalayan Cataract Project is doing excellent work in a developing country like Ethiopia in the prevention of avoidable blindness using direct high volume cataract surgical campaign, human power and infrastructure development. Training in Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus is one of the parts [needed for] reduction of childhood blindness and visual impairment.”

“ The training will advance my practice on the field, which will improve the quality of service I am providing in my field of specialty and my career. Now I am advanced to the level of fully trained and certified oculoplastic and reconstructive surgeon.” — DR. AEMERO ABATENAH, Oculoplastics Fellow
Focus on TrainingHCP provided 63 training opportunities for Ethiopian eye
care personnel. There was a significant increase in hands-
on surgical workshops conducted by visiting HCP volunteer
ophthalmologists and master trainers from our flagship training
partner in Nepal, the Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology.
One highlight was a Train-the-Trainer (TOT) course for 10
Ophthalmic Nurses from Ethiopia by two of Tilganga’s senior
nurses. These 10 nurses will conduct similar courses in Ethiopia.
Other successful hospital based training workshops took
place in country in the following specialties: Corneal Surgery,
Glaucoma, Oculoplastics, and Phacoemulsification surgery.
HCP also expanded observership opportunities for Ethiopian
ophthalmologists and residents by adding new academic
partners at Tel Aviv University and Emory University.

TRAINING
SUB-SPECIALTY FELLOWSHIPSSpecialized Training Opportunities for Ophthalmologists
2016 ANNUAL REPORT 17
In 2016, 15 ophthalmologists participated in both hands-
on trainings and observerships as part of ophthalmology
sub-specialty fellowships in pediatrics, cornea, retina,
glaucoma and oculoplastics (compared to 12 in 2015).
Training opportunities ranged from one week to one year
and took place in the U.S., Asia and Africa.
Three ophthalmologists completed their fellowships
this year: Dr. Meseret Ejigu and Dr. Aemero Abatenah
of Ethiopia in Oculoplastics and Dr. Wah Wah Lwin of
Myanmar in Retina. This is a great accomplishment, as full
fellowships require a 9-18 month commitment and are not
widely available for ophthalmologists from sub-Saharan
Africa. Many times, full fellowships are pieced together
through a combination of hands-on training at HCP’s
flagship partner, the Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology;
observerships at world class training institutions in the
U.S.; and in-country workshops led by HCP Affiliated
Ophthalmologists. It is our goal to continue to increase
the number of fellowships that we can offer to our partner
ophthalmologists so they can go on to provide high quality
sub-specialty care for their patients.Dr. Paul Bernstein of the John A. Moran Eye Center with Dr. Wah Wah Lwin of Yangon Eye Hospital.

Building the Next Generation of Ophthalmologists HCP supports medical residents who specialize in the field of
Ophthalmology. Residents represent the future of eye health for
their countries and are vital to the establishment of sustainable
eye care systems. Residents learn within their training institutions
from HCP affiliated ophthalmologists who provide lectures and
hands-on surgical training often through outreach surgical events
at other implementing partner sites. Residents also rotate at other
training institutions to gain experience in a variety of clinical and
surgical environments not currently available.
There were two new developments in 2016 to help strengthen
residency training. The first was a grant from the ASCRS
Foundation for the establishment of designated Residency
Program Coordinators at the six teaching institutions in Ethiopia.
Related to this, HCP has committed to supporting Basic Exams,
offered by the International Council of Ophthalmology, for
residents from three countries in order to assess and monitor
ophthalmic education. HCP’s goal is to raise the quality of
ophthalmic teaching in our partner countries equal to what is
offered at the finest teaching institution in the United States.
