What is an eye injury?

• An eye injury is defined as a physical or chemical hurt to the eye that can effect or impair vision and can lead to potentially blindness.

EYE INJURIES

• EYE INJURIES range from minor bruises and scratches to serious

lacerations, fractures, and burns. Eye injuries can range from being very minor for example getting soap in the eye to becoming potentially blinding.

Types of eye injuries;

Bleeding in the eye:

Symptoms: there aren't really any symptoms for bleeding in the eye. And no real treatment for

bleeding it just slowly disappears.

Signs: a small red spot of blood on the sclera (the white bit of the eye).

Corneal abrasion:

Symptoms: pain, sensation of something in your eye, tearing and sensitivity to light.

Signs: complaining of any of the above symptoms.

Chemical exposure:

Symptoms: pain or burning in or around the eye.

Signs: the eye may become red and the eye lid may become swollen.

Hyphema:

Symptoms: pain and blurred vision

Signs: a pool of blood in the lower eye lid.

Cataracts:

Symptoms: cloudy and blurred vision Signs: faded in colour

First AidEye injury

1. Support casualty's head: *Support the casualty's head to insure its as still as possible. *Tell casualty to keep their eyes as limited to movement as possible.2. Flush eye with cool, flowing water:*if chemical or heat burn, or smoke in eyes flush with water for at least 20

minutes.3. Place dressing over the eye:*place a clean pad or dressing over the casualty’s injured eye.*ask casualty to hold the pad in place.*bandage dressing over the eye. *if object is in the eye, lie casualty on their back, place pad around the object

and bandage on place.
