Did you know that only about 95 percent of animals have eyes Some are very simple

picking up only light and dark conditions while others are more complex Here are some

more interesting eye facts about our animal friends

A chameleonrsquos eyes can look in different directions at the same time

Many hamsters blink only one eye at a time

Dogs cannot see the difference between red and green

Cats can distinguish yellow blue and green hues but their eyes are best at detecting movement and

shades of gray

Butterflies can distinguish colors in the center of a flower that humans cannot see This ability aids in

pollination

Fish have no eyelids

Ants and flies have compound eyes meaning each eye is made up of many smaller eyes These

compound eyes are better at detecting fast movements

An eagle can see a rabbit about one mile away

The giant squid has the largest eye on earth It is 18 inches wide or about the size of a large

watermelon

Surgeons develop their skills during years of medical school internship residency and even fellowship

But how do practicing surgeons keep up with new technology and new skills

For conceptual education surgeons learn the same way as other professionals There are journal articles

seminars courses books and webinars But for hands-on surgical training the best way is through use of a

ldquowet labrdquo

A wet lab is a mock operating room used for surgeon practice The anatomy of a pig eye is closest to a

human eye So after hogs are processed the eyes are made available to ophthalmologists and other eye

researchers so surgeons can practice and research can be conducted

Typically wet labs are offered in medical schools or at large medical conferences

Every so often however we are able to set up a wet lab at Eye AssociatesSurgiCenter

Facts About Pink Eye

If your eyes are red itching and burning and have a discharge you may have

what is commonly called pink eye

The medical term is conjunctivitis

because it is an inflammation or

infection of the conjunctiva the

transparent membrane that lines

your eyelid and part of your eyeball

The inflammation causes the small

blood vessels in the conjunctiva to

become more prominent giving a

pink or red cast to your eyes

Conjunctivitis can be caused by

bacteria a virus or an allergy If it is caused by an allergy it should improve

once the allergy is treated and the allergen removed but may need treatment with

drops Bacterial conjunctivitis responds to antibiotics Just as a cold must run its

course so must viral conjunctivitis which often is caused by the same family

virus These types of conjunctivitis are not a serious health risk if diagnosed

promptly

Certain forms of conjunctivitis can become serious and sight-threatening

They include conjunctivitis caused by gonorrhea chlamydia or certain strains of

the adenovirus Differentiating these types of infections is sometimes difficult

and an exam is necessary

Conjunctivitis can be highly contagious but there are steps you can take to

lower your risk First wash your hands frequently and avoid touching your face

If someone in your household has pink eye do not share washcloths towels

pillowcases mascara or eyeliner with them

Pink eye is something we treat often If you suspect that you have

conjunctivitis call us to set up an appointment to seek for relief of your

symptoms and to reduce your risk of complications All of our doctors offer

these treatments
