• Support for families experiencing domestic abuse
• Popular activities including baby massage and early years drop-ins.
What else will happen at children centres?
• Groups will be available to parents of older children as well as those with under 5s and will be supported by a crèche where needed.
• Children’s centres will also host other groups and activities provided by the voluntary sector and other agencies including our health colleagues.
• Staff in local centres will be able to advise on how to secure places for families in the group work programmes
How do I get help for children and families?
Support for individual families will be provided through the Early Help Assessment process and will be provided with the support and involvement of those multi-agency colleagues who are already working with families.
Early Help Advice and guidance is available via the Early Help Co-ordinators. If you need to know who your co-ordinator is, email [email protected]
Families may also self-refer and families wishing to register for children’s centre services can do so via the web link below or in
person at their local library.

Network and Learning Exchange Focus:
Mathematics – Focus on the Area of Learning and some practical ideas to support EY Providers.
All children can be successful with mathematics, provided they have opportunities to explore mathematical ideas in ways that make personal sense to them and opportunities to develop mathematical concepts and understanding. Children need to know that practitioners are interested in their thinking, respect their ideas, are sensitive to their feelings and value their contributions.”
Children thinking mathematically: Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy Essential knowledge for EY practitioners
“Mathematical development is about a way of viewing and making sense of the world. It is also the material and the means for creating new and imaginative worlds to explore.”
Using and Applying Maths. The Association of Teachers of Mathematics.
1.By understanding children’s learning
Adults who are knowledgeable, who observe and can interpret children’s actions and who encourage and value their ideas
2. By planning appropriate contexts for learning
A play environment that supports children’s exploration and additional stimulus that motivates children to play, explore and talk further
3. By providing optimum conditions for learning
Time and space for children to play, develop and practice ideas and teaching strategies that place high priority on talk and the use of mathematical language
How do we promote mathematical thinking?
How do leaders and managers monitor the quality of learning and teaching?
Are opportunities for developing mathematical learning identified and
acted upon?
This activity helps practitioners to evaluate how the environment supports the speech, language and communication development of children and identifies places where authentic conversations between children and adults can take place.

• What are the children doing as they engage in these opportunities and with these resources?
• What mathematical thinking and learning takes place as they do these things?
