CLARIFICATION OF TECHNICAL TERMS

Tear strength — N/mm2 This is the maximum force required to tear the material. The tear strength is expressed in N/mm2.

E-modulus (elasticity modulus) —N/tm’ The elasticity modulus, indicated by E, is a material’s characteristic which is a measure forr a material’s stiffness or rigidity, and which partially determines the material’s elasticity under a (pulling) load. The elasticity modulus unit is expressed in N/m2. Most materials have a quite high modulus, which is why N/mm2 is often used.

Compression strength N/mm2 The compression strength is the resistance to pressure, the ability to withstand pressure.

Electrical resistance - Ohm The electrical resistance is the electrical characteristic of materials to ‘impede’ the flow of electrical current: if an electrical current flows through a material, this does not happen without impedance and energy is required; the current encounters “resistance”.

Shear strength — N/mm2 A material’s shear strength is the internal resistance which a material needs against plastic deformation due to sliding.

Insulation resistance - Ohm The insulation resistance is the resistance between the conductor and the earth in electrical installations or electrical appliances. The greater the insulation resistance, the smaller the current leakage.

Compactness or density — g/cm3 In physics and chemistry the density or specific mass of a material indicates how much mass of this material is present in a specific volume. Density is expressed in S.I. in kg/m3, but the older unit g/cm3 is used more. The conversion is: 1000kg/m3= 1 g/cm3.

Electrical voltage - V The electrical voltage is the potential difference between two points in space. The electri-cal voltage is usually determined between two points of an electrical connection, such as a wire.

Melting point - °C The melting point is the temperature whereby a solid is in equilibrium with the liquid form of this substance. It is usually assumed here that the pressure is 1 atmosphere.

Flammability The flammability is the extent to which a very local and limited source of heat can ignite a material.

Hardness The hardness of a material is the resistance that the material offers against permanent mechanical deformation.

CLARIFICATION OF TECHNICAL TERMS

Volatile organic substances - % Volatile organic substances (VOS) are a colection of carbon compounds which, as the name suggests, evaporate easily. Among other items, think of fuel and solvent compo-nents. These substances are related to a number of different environmental problems in-cluding (summer) smog and acidification. Some of these substances can have a harmful effect on human health.

Flash point - °C The flash point of a chemical substance is the lowest temperature at which the substance still releases sufficient vapour to be able to ignite when it comes into contact with a source of ignition. The flash point cannot be confused with the self-ignition temperature. The latter is the temperature at which a vapour/air mixture ignites spontaneously.

Tensile strength — N/mm2 The tensile strength is the maximum mechanical tension which a material reaches when it is plastically deformed.

Tractive force — N/mm2 Tractive force is force that is directed in such a way that the material to which the tractive force is applied wants to tear away.

Viscosity - mPa.s or millipoiseuille Viscosity is the ‘syrupy-ness’ of a liquid or gas. Thus water is an example of a liquid with a low viscosity, while honey is an example of a liquid with a high viscosity.

Evaporation Evaporation is the phase transition from a liquid to a gas in physics. Evaporation can oc-cur when the liquid boils. Evaporation also occurs when a liquid is exposed to drier air.

Specific resistance — Ohm/mm Specific resistance (p) or impedance is an electronic component’s capacity to resist an electrical current. A component’s resistance value is expressed in ohm/mm.

Solidification In physics solidification is the phase transition where a liquid transforms into a solid. Heat is released during this transition. To solidify a substance artificially, cooling is required so that the substance can get rid of its heat.

Thermal conductivity or heat conductivity coefficient I9W/mk

Thermal conductivity or the heat conductivity coefficient (k symbol) is a material constant which indicates how well the material conducts heat. It is also used in Fourier’s law (heat transfer through conduction).

Globally Harmonised Systemof classification and labelling

of chemicals

GHS or Globally Harmonised System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals is the new way of classifying, characterising and labelling chemical substances and preparations.

Depending on the associated dangers, a substance or mixture of substances is divided into one or more categories of dangers. There are three different categories of dangers:

• Physical dangers (e.g. explosive, flammable, oxidant)• Health dangers (e.g. toxic, carcinogenic)• Dangers to the environment (e.g. toxic for water organisms)

The motivation for reaching an internationally clear system is logical. After all, the differences per country in the designations and information relating to dangerous substances were quite big occasionally. The same substance could be labelled as ‘toxic’ in one country, but not be viewed as a dangerous substance in a different country. This also led to absences of clarity in safety information sheets and companies had to produce different safety information sheets for different parts of the world.

The introduction of a globally harmonised system (GHS) should eliminate these obstacles to world trade.

The draft regulation proposes the phased introduction of GHS:

• the current system will be retained for substances until 1 December 2010; for mixtures

and preparations it will be kept until 1 June 2015. The GHS label can be used sooner on a voluntary basis.

• substances will be classified according to both systems between 1 December 2010 and 1 June 2015 but the GHS label is obligatory.

• the current classification and labelling system expires from 1 June 2015 and only the GHS system will be valid.

Triangle O = sum of the sidess = b . h 2

Trapezoid O = sum of the sidess = (B + b) . h 2

Parallellogram O = 2 . (b + s) s = b . h

Rhombus O = 4 . zs = D . d 2

Rectangle O = 2 . (l + b) s = l . b

Square O = 4 . z s = z2

Circle O = 2 . π . r s = π . r2

The 3 rule We frequently compare two quantities with each other. When one quantity gets bigger, the other also increases. When one quanttity gets smaller, the other quantity also decreases.Example:A box of nails contains 75 nails and costs € 10. How much do 90 nails cost?Such questions can be solved by using the 3 rule.75 nails ====> € 101 nail ====> € 10 : 7590 nails ====> € 10 : 75 x 90 = 12Answer: you pay € 12 for 12 nails.

Consumption for spraying a joint Width of the joint or diameter of spraying nozzle (mm) x depth of the joint (mm) = ml joint cement/running metre

ml content of cartridge

Consumption of epoxy mortar CALCULATION PRINCIPLEAlways calculate the volume in dm3 and multiply by 2 (the specific gravity or density of epoxy mortar is always 2kg/dm3)

e.g.: Fill a groove that is 3 m long, 8 mm deep and 12 cm wide with epoxy mortarStep 1:Convert eveything into dm 3 metres = 30 decimetres 8 millimetres = 0.08 decimetre 12 centimetres = 1.2 decimetreStep 2:calculate the volume: 30 dm x 0.08 dm x 1.2 dm = 2.88 dm3

Step 3:convert this into the quantity of product: 2.88 dm3 x 2 kg/dm3 = 5.76 kg

RULE OF THUMBConsumption per m2 per mm of thickness = 2 kg/m2/mm

This is done according to the calculation:100 dm2 (=1m2) x 0.01 dm (=1mm) x 2 kg/dm3 (density) = 2 kg/mm

e.g.: treating a 10 m2 surface area with 6 mm epoxy mortar entails consumption of:6mm x 2 kg/m2 = 12 kg/m2

12 kg/m2 x 10 m2 = 120 kg

It is therefore simple to multiply the number of mm by 2 to find out the consumption per m2.

Calculation of content Name Figure Formula for circumference

Bar

The surface area of the floor of this bar is 2 cm x 1 cm =2 cm2

The height is 3 cm

The content of this bar is:2 cm x 1 cm x 3 cm = 6 cm3

Cube

The surface area of the floor of this cube is 3 cm x 3 cm = 9 cm2

The height is also 3 cm

The content of this cube is:3 cm x 3 cm x 3 cm = 27 cm3

Cylinder

The surface of the floor of this cylinder isradius x radius x pi =1.5cm x 1.5 cm x pi = 7.07 cm2

The height of this cylinder is 4 cm

The content of this cylinder is:1.5 cm x 1.5 cm x pi x 4 cm = 28.27 cm3

Pyramid

The content of a pyramid and cone is:The surface of the floor multiplied by the height:3 Abbreviated: B x H : 3 or B x H 3

The surface of the rectangular floor is: 4cm x 3 cm = 12 cm2

The height of the pyramid is 6 cm

The content of this pyramid is:4 cm x 3 cm x 6 cm : 3 = 24 cm3

Cone

The surface area of the circle is:radius x radius x pi = 2cm x 2 cm x pi = 12,57 cm2

The height of the cone is 3 cm

The content of the cone is:2 cm x 2 cm x pi x 3 cm : 3 = 12,57 cm3

Prism

You also calculate the content of a prism by:base multiplied by height. With this prism it is best to take the triangular front as the base (floor) because it has the shape of the flat surfaces that you can cut away.

The surface of the base is:4 cm x 3 cm : 2 = 6 cm2

The height of the figure is 2 cm.

The content of this prism is:4 cm x 3 cm : 2 x 2 cm = 12 cm3

MISCELLANEOUS

In general, the content of a figure is:The surface area of the floor multiplied by the height. This is also written as B&H. Where B is the surface of the base area and H is the height of the figure. The base is the floor of a figure.
