EXTRAORDINARY JUBILEE OF MERCY 2015-2016
Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy
Meditations on Mercy
January 2016
Micah 7:18-20; Misericordiae Vultus, No. 17
"Who is a God like you, who removes guilt
and pardons sin for the remnant of his inheritance;
Who does not persist in anger forever,
but instead delights in mercy,
And will again have compassion on us,
treading underfoot our iniquities?
You will cast into the depths of the sea all our sins;
You will show faithfulness to Jacob,
and loyalty to Abraham,
As you have sworn to our ancestors from days of old."
Happy New Year! January is often a month of new beginnings and new resolutions. In this Jubilee Year, we
are asked to make acts of mercy a priority in our lives and to live out the compassionate love of God. In this
passage from Micah, we are reminded of God's eternal promise to us. Throughout the Old Testament, we read
stories of God's covenant that he made with his chosen individuals (through Noah, Abraham, and Moses).
This covenant is more than a promise; it is also a relationship between God and his people. This relationship
continues with the New Covenant, which is made through the life, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus, and with
our participation in the New Covenant through the sacraments of the Church. God, who is ever faithful, will
never break his covenant with us. Even if we fail or fall away, God still yearns for our return.
Pope Francis highlights verses 18-19 as an illustration of God's compassion and mercy toward us. No person
and no action can compare to the generous mercy and compassion that God has for us. Even though we may
break our part of the covenant relationship, God pardons our sins because of his great love. God "delights in
mercy"—God's merciful attitude is not a chore or a bother for God. Rather, pardoning sins and drawing peo-
ple back into a relationship brings joy to God. As we make our annual resolutions, don't forget to include one
about acting as God acts, with love and compassion to everyone we encounter. If you have trouble keeping
this resolution, just remember that God will always keep his "resolutions"!
Reflection Questions
1. After reading about God's covenant with us and God's enduring love and compassion, what are some things
we can do to strengthen our relationship with God? Why is it important for us to respond to God's covenant
of love and mercy with our own actions of love and mercy?
2. What is one realistic New Year's resolution you can make this year that will help you adopt the attitude of
mercy? What are some things you can do that could help you stay on track in keeping this resolution through-
out the year?

January 10th, 2016 - The Baptism of The Lord
From Fr. Suresh
TODAY’S READINGS
First Reading: Isaiah 40:1-5, 9-11
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 104:1b-2, 3-4, 24-25, 27-28, 29-30
Second Reading: Titus 2:11-14; 3:4-7
Gospel: Luke 3:15-16, 21-22
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
“John said: ‘One mightier than I is coming;
he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire’.” - Luke 3:16
BAPTISM OF THE LORD… HEAVEN IS “OPENED” FOR US AS WELL!
"After all the people had been baptized and Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, heaven was opened." What a
treat to be in that crowd! Just imagine the experience of witnessing this manifestation of divinity! To SEE the Holy
Spirit "in bodily form like a dove" and to hear the voice that "came from heaven" announcing Jesus' true identity. Don't
we all long for this kind of miraculous clarity? Wouldn't it do wonders for our faith if we had such unmistakable
certainty about who Jesus really is?
It's easy to imagine that the first Christians had it easier than we do. They got to be with Jesus in person, and to witness
the miracles that went along with his years on earth. Because of this, we can quickly forget the benefits we enjoy that
they did not. We live on the other side of the Resurrection, for example. The first followers of Christ believed in him
BEFORE he rose from the dead. We, on the other hand, have the confidence of knowing that this man literally
conquered death. We also have two millennia of Christian witness through the saints to pull upon. The first Christians
had no idea what this new religion would produce, how many people would embrace it, or how it would change the
world for the better. We know that Christianity has been fruitful beyond measure.
Today's Gospel informs us that it was only after they were baptized that the people witnessed the opening of heaven.
Even Jesus himself was baptized before he heard this earthly confirmation of his heavenly origin. We who have been
baptized, following the example of Christ, also have "access" to the voice of God. In the silence of our hearts, and
through God's word in the Bible (another advantage we enjoy), heaven is "opened" for us as well.

FINAL REMINDER - CHRISTMAS OFFERTORY COLLECTION THROUGH NEXT WEEKEND
The Christmas offertory collection is part of our annual parish budget. The entire Christmas collection stays right here
in the parish. All other collections and donations during the year are assessed 7% by the Archdiocese, whereas the
Christmas collection is exempt from such assessment. If you have been away over Christmas you can still make your
Christmas offering to the parish through next Sunday, January 17th, just so long as you indicate in the cheques and
envelopes that it is your “Christmas 2015 offering”. Please date your cheques December 25th, 2015. Thank you!
Wishing you all a wonderful week!

A PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS O Jesus, Good and Gentle Shepherd grant that the men
and women from our community may have the grace and
the courage to hear and answer Your call to priesthood
and religious life. Give them the wisdom to realize that
life is a gift. Let them realize their life is part of YOUR
plan. Call forth those You have chose to spread the
gospel message, and help them to freely respond to a life
of service in the church. May the parents and families of our parish, support
and encourage our young men and women to search for, follow and answer
the call of God in their lives. Amen

PARISH NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
ST. IGNATIUS/DOROTHY RICE SCHOLARSHIP FUND —
NOW IN OUR 19TH YEAR ASSISTING FAMILIES WITH SCHOOL TUITION!
The St. Ignatius/Dorothy Rice Memorial Scholarship Fund assists families who are not able to afford the full tuition at
St. Ignatius School (which averages about $9500 per year). Each year we help to keep children in our school who other-
wise couldn’t afford a Catholic Education. Over the past 18 years we have assisted nearly 170 children from about 110
families! The average child in this programme receives about $200-$300 per month off the fees and in return the families
volunteer at several school/parish events during the year, in return for the support.
How you can help:
Donation envelopes are available at the front entrance of St. Ignatius Church or in the church office. Donations can
be dropped in the collection, sent in by mail or dropped off at the church office. If paying by cheque, please make
your donations payable to: ST. IGNATIUS, and in the memo, please indicate “Scholarship Fund”.
On-line transfers can be done through Butterfield Bank… contact May in the parish office for details.
Perhaps your company would like to assist with regular contributions or a one-off donation?
Please consider the Scholarship Fund from time to time when doing your charitable work throughout the year!
Many thanks to all those who have contributed to the fund during the past school year and during the past several years!
For further information, please contact Jeremy Rice in the parish office or via e-mail: [email protected].
