Sr~ci.u.~INSTRUCTIONS NOT IN ABOVE-MENTIONED REGULATIONS.0

Careshould be taken that the striker is kept in good workingu. order. The protrusion of the striker through the firing hole in the

breech screw should be between ~11inch maximum and •Q~)inch9~ minimum. A gauge for measuringthe protrusion is provided, and‘~ shouldbe usedas follows:—

Open the breech, swing the breech screw and carrier into theloading position, and removethe striker. Take out the main springfrom the striker and ic-assemblethe latter. Replace the striker

~ (without main spring) in position in the gun, pressin the “ catchretainingbreechscrew,” and revolve the breech screw in the carrieruntil it is in the position it would be for firing if the breech wereclosed. Press the striker forward in the breech screw as far as it‘will go, and apply the gaugeto the front faceof the breechscrew. In tl]e eventof the protrusionnot beingwithin the above-mentionedlimits, the firing pin must be adjustedor exchanged.

rI~IIebreech fittings, and also the guides on the jacketby meansof which the gunslidesin the cradle of the carriage, shouldbe keptclean and oiled or greased, and maintained in good working orderall working surfacesmust be well lubricated, the fittings being takeiioff sometimesfor this purpose, especiallyafter firing.

Lubricatingholesare preparedin the upperside of the carriertoadmit of the rear end of the breech screw in the carrier beingoiled. The holesare closedagainstthe ingressof dust by Inealis of a brassplungerandspiralspring, which mustbe presseddown by the spoutof the oil canwhenlubricating.

All fittings of the gun shouldbe treatedwith care; violenceandjerks shouldbe avoided, andno unnecessaryforceshouldbeemployed.

Caremust be takenwhencleaningthe striker, orwhenassemblingthe tripping piece in the striker, that no unnecessaryforce is used,so that the flat spring is notdistorted.

The breechfittings should work easily, and be free from cracksand burrs. The latter can be removed by filing, but this must bedonecarefully so as not to permanentlydamagethe fitting. Shoulda crack be observedin a breech fitting, it should be exchangedifpossible.

The threadsof thebreechscrew should be freefrom burrs.‘l’lie breech should be kept coveredlip, if possible,to preventdust

and grit from getting into the intersticesof the breech fittings, which might impede their easy working. A waterproof canvascoveris provided for thepurpose.

TELEscoPE,SIGIMINO, No. 4.

Tofocusthe Telescope.

Thetelescopes are issuedwith theobjectglassfixed at its point of

infinite focus, andis thensuitablefor all distancesover400 yards; itthereforeonly remainsto focus (lie pointer with the eyepiece. To dothis, placethe telescopein its b2ariugs,put on the caps, and fix theclamps. Direct the telescope on a well-defined object, preferablyabout1,000yardsor more distant.

Screw theeyepiecein or out until the pointerstandsoutclearly, the objectwill then standout clearly at thesametime.

Care of Telescope.

The telescopesarc issuedwith all cells, joints, &c., tightly screwedup. The glassesshould not beunscrewedexceptin casesof necessity,.andthen only by a competentperson; they will seldomrequire to hocleanedon the inside. Cleaning should be done only with chamoisleather, andgreatcaremust be taken that no oil or greasetouchesthe glasses,as it can only be completely removed by the use ofspirit.

If the obectglassis unscrewedfor cleaning purposes, the lensesshould not be removedfrom the cell, as they may ho easily re-assembledincorrectly. The unscrewing of the object glass cellcanses defective collimation, rendering the telescopeuseless,andnecessitatingre-collimation.

The focussingtubesshould on no accountbe removedby anybuta skilled person, specially appointedto do so.

rf lie body of the telescopemust not be cleanedor polished withanythingexceptadry clothandalittle oil or vaschine, carebeingtakenthat the lensesdo not come in contact with any greasy substance.Even fingers, when apparentlyperfectly clean and dry, may leavegreasymarkson the lenseswhich will impair the definition of thetelescopemore than dust.

General1?emarks,

Telescopesus issuedfroth Wcolwlch are tightly screwedtip andaccuratelycollimated, and provided that none of the screw threadsareunscrewedor tamperedwith, the collimation will remain a~goodaswhen first adjusted.
