WELCOME

We are proud of our wide-ranging programme of extra-curricular activities that provide memorable experiences for our students and which allow them to pursue their interests and further develop a wide range of key transferable skills. We strongly encourage our students to get involved and to recognise the value of these activities as part of their development.

We offer a wide variety of clubs and activities, run both at lunchtime and after school.

3

In addition, we offer a number of educational visits, put on school productions and compete in inter-school competitions in many sports.

This booklet highlights many of the exciting opportunities available to students. Please take the time to familiarise yourself with all the clubs, teams and activities on offer.

More activities will be added throughout the year, so please check the weekly and daily notices and get involved.

PE SPORTS CLUBS

Rugby Club (Winter & Spring terms)

There are two training sessions a week for all five-year groups. All students are welcome to attend and selection for the school teams will be made from the students who attend training. Each week the players will work on skills through games based sessions and in the Spring term specific Sevens training will take place.

Girls’ rugby will be developed in the Spring term.

The school enters competitions at local, regional and national level. These include national competitions & the County Cup. We also take part in the national schools’ 7‘s at Rosslyn Park each year.

6 6

Football Club (Autumn and Spring terms)

During the Autumn term, football training is once a week and is open to anyone

Indoor 5-a-side football training is held once a week during the Spring term and is open to everyone within Year 7. We have both boys and girls’ teams which compete in Blaby and Harborough Tournaments (qualification to the South Leicestershire Tournament).

Last years’ Year 7 girls’ team finished 3rd in South Leicestershire. 4

PE SPORTS CLUBS Hockey Club

Year 7 girls’ Hockey Club runs afterschool until 4.30pm once a week, from October through to Easter. This builds on skills introduced in lessons and develops game awareness in a 7 a-side situation. Year 8 & 9 Hockey Club is also afterschool until 4.30pm once a week. Year 10/11 Hockey Club is afterschool on Fridays until 4:30 p.m. This runs from September through to Easter.

4

All years get to play 7 a-side but the Year 9s also get to experience full 11 a-side games and enter County Tournaments for this as well as their 7 a-side. We have links with outside clubs and this enables the girls to have the opportunity to play and develop further. They can also develop through the Leicestershire Development Squads, which may lead to them playing for county teams in the future. We also run boys training sessions once a week for Years 8-11 and enter teams into local competition.

Teams are run in all three age groups with friendly matches organised against Kibworth and Leicester Grammar on a regular basis. The teams play in the Team Leicestershire Competition and also enter County Tournaments. Most matches are after school between January and the end of March.

This year WPA entered the Sports Magazine Cup, a National Competition, and with success through the initial rounds provides the opportunity to travel to schools in different counties.

There are five league races over the course of the Autumn term in which WPA runners take part as individuals and as teams. With three age groups the Year 7’s run in a separate race from the Year 8 and 9 runners who race as juniors, with the Year 10 And 11 students running in the final race. There is also a team relay opportunity which requires a team of four runners. At the end of the season there is a team and individual championship, after which the top runners in each age group are selected to represent the county at the English Schools’ Championships in March at various beautiful locations around the country.

In Netball there are training sessions each week for all year groups, both inside and outside depending on the weather. The sessions are open to all girls who would like to improve their Netball skills and understanding of the rules. Each year group has the opportunity to play in the league matches organised as part of the Team Leicestershire Fixtures Calendar during the Autumn term. There are also plenty of opportunities to play in friendly matches with local schools, particularly Pitsford Grammar, and to represent the school in the South East Tournaments and County Championships.

DUKE OF EDINBURGH

The Duke of Edinburgh’s official websites quote the Award as being “a real adventure from the first day to the last. Every section gives you something different - that's the fun of it!”

Students at Welland Park Academy have the opportunity to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. This opportunity will be on offer to all Year 9 students.

The Duke of Edinburgh programme requires determination and a great deal of commitment; it provides students with a real opportunity to learn about themselves. The Award encourages teamwork, self-motivation and leadership, all of which are valued by future employers and universities. As well as the much anticipated expeditions, the pupils are required to participate in three other areas; volunteering, skills and physical recreation. The students will get to choose their own activities for their skill, physical and volunteer section, and set individual personal goals. This gives them the freedom to tailor the award to their own hobbies and interests.

The Bronze Award is the first of three Awards and is structured as follows:

A Bronze Duke of Edinburgh programme has four sections, Volunteering, Physical, Skills and Expedition. You must simultaneously complete a minimum of three months’ activity for each of the Volunteering, Physical and Skills sections, and plan, train for and do a two day (1 night) Expedition. You also have to spend an extra three months on one of the Volunteering, Physical or Skills sections. It’s your choice which one and, though you can change your mind later, you should decide which section you want to do for longer at the beginning. Knowing how long you’re going to do it for will help you to choose your activity and set your goals for each section

It will take a minimum of six months to complete the Bronze programme. Students will need to apply to take part. If successful, they must attend a weekly club, the date and time of which will follow.

Year 10 students will also have the opportunity to take part in the Silver award.

There is a financial contribution from students to participate with the Award; this will cover the cost of the expeditions and enrolment. Students will also be expected to supply a certain amount of equipment for their own personal use. This figure will be confirmed later dependent on numbers, but a rough estimate is £210.

MUSICAL INSTRUMENT LESSONS

Extra-curricular provision for Music is extensive and aims to cater for a wealth of interests and abilities. A team of 15 visiting instrumental teachers make important contributions to the department’s work, supporting both curricular and extra-curricular music at the school. They assist with the preparation of students for individual music examinations as well as GCSE performance work and, in some instances, lead lunchtime ensembles. Most lessons take place in the department music rooms on a rota basis, timetabled for weekly tuition. Timetables are displayed on the Music Notice Board.

Students receiving instrumental tuition are strongly encouraged to participate in our regular performances throughout the year including lunchtime and evening concerts, cross-curricular events and musicals. Approximately 18% of students receive instrumental lessons from our visiting teachers. There are many more who have lessons outside of normal Academy hours.
