African Hairless Dog

Like other early hairless dogs, the African Hairless Dog — also referred to as the Abyssinian Sand Terrier —was thought to possess magical healing powers. This was due to its warm, furless body, which was used as a hot compress against aches and pains. The dogs were also effective bed warmers.

Now extinct, a preserved African Hairless Dog is on display in England’s Walter Rothschild Zoological Museum. This breed is thought to be entwined in many hairless breeds today, including the popular Chinese Crested dog.

Blue Paul Terrier Legend links the origins of this

ruthless fighting dog with sailor John Paul Jones, who was credited for introducing blue terriers into Scotland. With a bluish tinged coat, this dog was common in U.K. and U.S. in the mid-1800s when dog fighting was widespread entertainment.

No dates are linked to its disappearance, but estimates place it between 1850 and 1900. Theories suggest that, after being crossed heavily with American Pit Bull Terriers and Staffordshire Bull Terriers, the Blue Paul has evolved into those breeds

Cordoba fighting dog

A fighter, hunter, and a guard dog, this strong and tenacious breed was named for its native region of

Cordoba, Argentina. Origins were thought to come from crossing the Bull Terrier with several other

strong breeds, such as the Alanos and the Staffordshire

Bull Terrier. A solid white coat was favored, but brindle and fawn were also options. This large dog was extinct by the mid-20th century.

Kuri Their fierce muzzle and fox-like

build may seem uninviting, but the Kuri was a domesticated dog, a companion, and also source of fur and meat. Kuris arrived with canoe-bound settlers to New Zealand in the 13th century. By the early 1860s, the breed was extinct, blamed on its inability to survive interbreeding with European

dogs. Three taxidermy examples of Kuri dogs remain, which are highly coveted at auctions.

Paisley Terrier

Originally from Paisley, Scotland, this small dogresembles today’s

Yorkshire Terrier. A show dog and a devoted companion, this silky- coated dog insisted upon both togetherness and

attention, and would bark or exhibit depression if left alone

too long. Their long, soft coat was striking but grooming-intensive, seen in shades of tan or blue. The breed began its decline in the late 1800s.

St. John’s Water Dog

This Labrador look-alike had its glory days in the 16th century, when fishermen in Newfoundland relied on their ability to haul lines and retrieve ptarmigan and seals. A government tax imposed on any

dog not associated with the production of sheep contributed to this breed’s decline. While two males were documented in the 1970s, they could do little to prevent eventual extinction.

Southern Hound

One of the oldest scent breeds, this dog dates back to the 1400s in Southern England and Wales. With a keen nose that could detect day-old trails, it was a slow but effective tracker of deer, a popular sport during the end of the Renaissance.

When tastes migrated toward the faster sport of fox hunting, this methodical and deliberate tracker frustrated hunters, who began crossing their dogs with speedier canines. The Southern Hound led to the development of subsequent scent hounds, including the Foxhound, Bloodhound, and Beagle.

Turnspit dog

The Turnspit gives new meaning to the label “working dog.” Small with short legs, this dog ran on a wheel that rotated a spit in the fireplace, turning the meat to cook evenly. To protect the dog from overheating, the wheel was situated high on a wall, away from the blaze.

British kitchens in the 16th century would typically keep two Turnspit dogs, so they could alternate work days. When a mechanical spit turner was developed in the 1800s, the breed began to fade away. A taxidermy reminder remains in a museum in Wales.

Tweed Water Spaniel Records indicate today’s

Golden Retriever may have this dog to thank for its origin. The Tweed Water Spaniel was an intelligent bird and waterfowl hunter and adept, water-resistant swimmer. Thought to originate from a cross of non-specific water Spaniels with other established breeds, such

as the St. John’s Water Spaniel, this eager worker was invaluable to fishermen in the region of Berwick-upon-Tweed, in Northern England. The dog became extinct by the end of the 19th century.

White English Terrier

This small, all-white dog was one of the first breeds developed for show. Efforts toward its creation were concentrated on the 1860s and 1870s, when a group of dog fanciers were intent on developing a prick-eared version of a small, white working Terrier. However,

both prick-eared and drop-eared offspring persisted in the same litter.

The breed was plagued by health problems and deafness, and died out in the early 20th century. Having been crossbred with the English Bulldog, the White English Terrier is thought to have given rise to the Boston Terrier and Bull Terrier.

Endangered Dogs

Ethiopian Wolf First up is the Ethiopian Wolf.

This is the world's most endangered canid with fewer than 500 individuals left on earth. Located way up in the highlands of Ethiopia, it is the only canid species to have made a home at such altitudes.

Page 15: Extinct, endangered and threaten dogs4 students project...organic cop

Red Wolf The Red Wolf is often

overshadowed by its more popular cousin, the Gray Wolf. These residents of the southeast were nearly driven to extinction by the middle of the 1900s by two main threats: first, humans killed them to prevent attacks on livestock; second, coyotes began spreading from the west into the east where they hybridized with the wolves. There were only 14

pure red wolves left in 1973. Today, after decades of conservation efforts, there are around 120 red wolves living wild and another 200 in captivity but the same threats still exist today. An especially significant threat is the occurrence of coyote hunts -- red wolves can easily be mistaken for coyotes from a distance and are still illegally killed either on purpose or by being misidentified as a coyote. Advocates for the wolves seek to end coyote hunting competitions and night hunts in order to protect red wolves from this threat.

Page 16: Extinct, endangered and threaten dogs4 students project...organic cop

Mexican Gray Wolf The Mexican Gray Wolf is the

smallest gray wolf subspecies present in North America, and it is also the most genetically distinct. Nearly wiped out in the 1900s as ranching took over the southwest, the species was

listed as endangered and given protections in 1976, though they had been eliminated from the US entirely and populations in Mexico were severely reduced.

Page 17: Extinct, endangered and threaten dogs4 students project...organic cop

Dhole The Dhole is a wild dog species

native to South and Southeast Asia. These highly social animals live in large packs, and because of these big group sizes, the ongoing loss of habitat and prey due to human encroachment has had a serious impact on the species. They have also been the

targets for persecution, being hunted for bounties throughout India. Now listed as endangered, the dholeis protected by the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972, however, continued loss of habitat and prey means the species' population is still declining.

Page 18: Extinct, endangered and threaten dogs4 students project...organic cop

African Wild Dog The African Wild Dog goes by

many names, including African hunting dog, Cape hunting dog, painted dog, painted wolf, painted hunting dog, spotted dog, and ornate wolf. So the photo of this canid may be more familiar than the name. This distinctive species occurs only in Africa, and while there were once an estimated

500,000 dogs across 39 countries, there are now only about 3,000-5,000 left in eastern and southern Africa. The main threats to the species are habitat loss and poaching. With less room to spread out to hunt due to human encroachment, the species faces higher competition for prey with lions and hyenas, both of which are bigger and stronger species. They also face persecution by farmers and ranchers.

Page 19: Extinct, endangered and threaten dogs4 students project...organic cop

Darwin’s FoxThe next species on our list is Darwin's Fox, a species native to Chile. The Darwin's fox is a forest dweller, and is smaller than other fox species. It is listed as critically endangered species with only about 320 individuals left -- about 250 of them living on the small ChiloéIsland and the rest living in Nahuelbuta National Park in Chile. Though the population is currently stable, the species still faces threats from poaching and habitat loss.

Island Fox

The Island Fox, is a fascinating species descended from the gray fox. Found on six of the eight Channel Islands off the coast of California, there are actually six subspecies, each unique to the island it lives on. Like the painted dog, the fox goes by many names including coast fox, short-tailed fox, island gray fox, Channel Islands fox, Channel Islands gray fox, California Channel Island fox and insular gray fox. Because it is found only on these small islands and have been isolated for so long, they are not immune to parasites and diseases found on the mainland. Thus, humans visiting the islands did serious damage to the species during the 1990s. Another serious problem for the fox was predation by Golden Eagles. Today, there are significant (and so far successful) efforts to rebuild fox populations, though it is still listed as critically endangered.

San Joaquin Kit Fox

This small, dust-colored canid is one of the most endangered animals in California. The San Joaquin Kit Fox can be found in the Central Valley of California, primarily in the Carrizo Plain. It was fairly common up until the 1930s when farming and human development took over the valley. Now there are fewer than 7,000 left. Today, not only is the San Joaquin kit fox faced with human encroachment —which causes displacement in habitat, increased difficulty in finding food and an increase in rodent poisons, which also kill the foxes — but also climate change. The species' population rises and falls along with rainfall, and the increased severity of droughts and changes in weather patterns caused by climate change are serious problems.

Northern Swift Fox

Given the name swift fox because of their swift nature, they are almost exclusively nocturnal and spend more time underground in their dens than any other canid. Very social animals, they are also romantics and keep one partner for life.Agribusiness is a threat to this breed, their habitat is the rich grasslands that are ideal for agriculture conversion. Another threat on a local level are federal poisoning programs to reduce the populations of local predator and prey populations.

Bush Dog

The wildlife in Ecuador is extremely diverse and fascinating. Ecuador is home to many animals and birds that are unique to the country. Sadly, many of these animals are found on the endangered species list of Ecuador. One such species is the Bush Dog(Speothos venaticus), an elusive creature that roams the forests in search of food and survival. The Bush Dog of Ecuador is a small animal that weighs between five to seven kilograms and stands at a maximum height of thirty centimeters. Their characteristic reddish-brown coats are easily recognized and their coat hair is described as “longish”. The hairs of their coats are remarkably soft and lighter patches can usually be noticed under their throats. Bush Dogs have rounded skulls and their tails are of a darker coloration than the rest of their bodies. What makes these beautiful animals so unique is the fact that they have webbing between their toes, which means they are very strong swimmers.

CorgiCorgis—those short-legged, big-eared, sweet-faced pups that the Internet adores—are in danger of disappearing. The AFP reports that Britain’s Kennel Club breeders’ association has put the beloved breed on its “at watch” list and says that corgis are on their way to “vulnerable native breed” status by 2014.Only 241 Pembroke Welsh Corgis, a breed that counts Queen Elizabeth II among its fans, were registered in Britain this year. The kennel club says the breed probably won’t reach the 300 required registrations to stay off the “vulnerable native breed” list.

Page 26: Extinct, endangered and threaten dogs4 students project...organic cop

Dulux DogThe old English sheepdog has been put on a watch list of endangered dogs over fears it could face extinction. The breed, used in advertisements for Dulux paint for more than 50 years, had just 316 of its puppies registered this year, the Kennel Club said.

English Setter

In the last ten years or so, figures suggest that puppy registrations have dropped by two thirds in the UK whereas Chihuahuas saw an amazing increase of 25% last year – all thanks to many celebrities owning one of these tiny dogs – namely Paris Hilton and others.

A Few Facts About The English Setter:English Setters have wonderful natures, they are very affectionate and extremely loyal dogs

The breed is one of the most elegant of all British breeds to look at

English Setters are great around children making them the perfect family pet

They are thought to be one of the very oldest breeds of native dogs – there is evidence of the breed as far back as 200 years ago when they were used for upland game bird hunting

They are pretty big dogs and need a lot of space and exercise to stay happy and healthy

The English Setter is now considered to at risk of extinction and has been placed on the Native Vulnerable Breeds list with the UK Kennel Club for the first time

Page 28: Extinct, endangered and threaten dogs4 students project...organic cop

Rough-coated Otter hound

The gorgeous otterhound with only 38 puppies being registered with the UK Kennel Club last year. This figure is down by 33% on figures in previous years. This large and rough-coated breed is quite unique and has a loud call which sounds more like baying than barking. With the breed being so much in decline, there are only three breeders left in the UK and only 600 otterhounds in the entire world – and not all of them are really suitable to be used for breeding purposes.

Interesting Facts About Otterhounds

Otterhounds have long pendulous ears and thick rough coats that are waterproof

They were bred to help keep the numbers of otters down in rivers in order to preserve any trout living in them

They make great family pets and are inquisitive, bold, affectionate as well as independent and intelligent dogs – they are fun to be around

Otterhounds are fantastic swimmers – they have webbed feet and adore being in water for hours on end

The breed can live anything from 10 to 13 years if well looked after

The reason why the breed has fallen out of favour with people is thought to be because of their size. Trends and fashions dictate a lot when it comes to the popularity of a breed, but then so does the cost of feeding a larger dog. The otterhound is quite an expensive dog to keep.

The Dandie Dinmont Terrier

This lovely native dog has lost its appeal with puppy registrations dropping to just 98 last year. The breed got its name form Sir Walter Scott's “Guy Mannering” and the fictional character Dandie Dinmont. The Dandie Dinmont Terrier breed may look small and quiet but when they want to they can move pretty fast. They are lovely intelligent little dogs although not the most obedient in the world. However, their saving grace is they adore being around children who adore the breeds' big, adoring eyes.

Interesting Facts About the Dandie Dinmont Terrier

The Dandie was originally bred in the 18th century for badger and otter hunting in Scotland and England

They have a double coat – the undercoat is soft and linty whereas the upper one is harder and more resilient

The Dandie makes a great family pet – they are lively, alert, very inquisitive and extremely loyal little characters

If well looked after, the Dandie can live anything between 12 to 14 years!

Page 30: Extinct, endangered and threaten dogs4 students project...organic cop

Skye TerrierA lovely, native breed, this gorgeous terrier only saw 44 new puppy registrations last year – however this figure was up on the previous year which is a goodish sign. The breed became well known when it featured in the film Greyfriars Bobby – this is the story of a Skye Terrier that guarded his owners' grave in Edinburgh for 14 whole years during the 19th century. There is a statue to honour his loyalty.

Interesting Facts About Skye Terriers

The breed derives its name from an island in Scotland – the Isle of Skye where it originates from

Queen Victoria loved Skye Terriers

The breed was immortalized by the film Greyfriars Bobby

The breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club way back in 1887

Skye Terriers have very strong hunting instincts so need to be watched when around smaller animals –but they make fantastic family pets
