SolutionDell created a resilient infrastructure basedon Dell PowerEdge™ 1750 and 6650 servers, and a Dell | EMC storage area network (SAN).Pupils and teachers use a combination ofDell OptiPlex™ GX280 desktops, Dell Latitude™

D505 notebooks, Dell W5300n laser printers, and Dell 3300P and 4100MP projectors. In addition, network managers receive fullsupport from the Dell Education Support Service team.

Dell has been working with MossbourneCommunity Academy, an all-ability ICTspecialist secondary school, to implementend-to-end ICT solutions to help improveteaching and learning within the school.Opened in September 2004, Mossbourne ispart of the Government’s AcademiesProgramme which will see 200 Academiesbeing built by 2010.

Dell was appointed to design, implement andmanage a resilient ICT network that wouldgive Mossbourne the flexibility to expand asthe school grows from 220 pupils to its fullstudent quota of 900 students in 2009.Technology is integrated into all aspects of teaching and learning, as well asadministration and school management. As such, Dell’s ICT solution involves acombination of desktops, notebooks, printers, projectors, servers, Dell | EMCstorage networks, all covered under thededicated Dell Education Support Service.Graham Cox,VP and Head of ICT andTechnology at Mossbourne, says: “Whenchoosing to work with Dell, we wereconfident that they would deliver the best

value solution, tailored to our particularneeds. Like many Academies, we knewwe needed a flexible network that can beexpanded without dramatically altering ourbasic infrastructure as we continue to grow.Dell’s solution therefore resulted insubstantial longterm cost savings. We reallyfeel we’ve collaborated with Dell to get towhere we are today.”

ICT is embedded throughout pupils’educationThe school has seven blocks, eachdedicated to a core learning area, frommaths, humanities and languages toscience, technology and expressive arts. There is also a Year 7 area that helps tointegrate pupils into secondary school, a transition many pupils find daunting.

ICT is completely integrated into all NationalCurriculum subjects. With PE, for example, pupils are able to video themselves playingthe sport, review the film and discuss theiron-pitch tactics. They can also research thesport on the Internet and study their sportingheroes’ skills.

Dell has deployed 300 Dell OptiPlex™ GX280desktops throughout the school wherepupils can, through their Active Directoryprofile, log on from anywhere within thepremises. Dell was instructed to design auser profile that would allow pupils toaccess work that is stored on the Dell | EMCstorage area network (SAN). The networkenables the school to store its curriculum, administrative systems and teachers’intranet as well as ensure both teachers and pupils have reliable access to their owndata. It also provides an automated serviceto back up to the school’s data. This will alsoprovide a valuable platform for the Academywhen upgrading to a Virtual LearningEnvironment in the future.

In addition to this, there are six ICT learningareas, each with 30 desktops where pupilshave the majority of their ICT lessons. Three“laptop trolleys” each with 16 Dell Latitude™

D505 notebooks working wirelessly offer aflexible solution for all classrooms in theschool and enable ICT to be a key part of all subjects.

Mossbourne has Smart Board InteractiveWhiteboards throughout the school. Theseenhance subject learning as pupils canengage further with their subject matter innew and creative ways, and benefit fromvisual and digital resources that really bringtheir learning to life.

Through a connection via the London Gridfor Learning, the school benefits from astrong broadband link, which providesaccess to every classroom through bothwired and wireless devices. This allows both staff and pupils to collect informationquickly, and reliably, resulting in more timespent on understanding and interpreting the information.

Dell technology and support at MossbourneTeachers can also use Dell Latitude™

notebooks, which give them greaterflexibility in terms of their use of technology, for lesson planning, creating lessons, assessment as well as communicating withcolleagues and pupils on email. There are 17Dell W5300n laser printers in the school with48 Dell 3300P and 13 Dell 4100MP projectorsare in place providing a visual element aswell as encouraging interactivity inclassroom teaching.

Dell PowerEdge™ 1750 and PowerEdge™ 6650servers have been deployed to deliver ahighly scalable system that the Academycan add to without having to disrupt the

existing infrastructure. The Dell EducationSupport Service means that Mossbourne’snetwork manager can engage with supportstaff within Dell who are focussed on theeducational needs and pressures, with theobjective of maximising the school’stechnology.

The predictable and scalable nature of thistechnology together with the support available, gives teachers the confidence to integrate ICT within their disciplines, and encourage enthusiasm and inclusionalongside the primary objective toraise teaching and learning standards forboth pupils and the local community.

A city school ensures ICT remains at the heartof its curriculum for years to comeMossbourne Community Academy guarantees cost-effective network scalability and long-term savings with Dell technology
