DESCRIPTION

The exterior moldings are securedto the body byany one or a combination of the following attachmentsFig. 17-1 and 17-2.

a. Attachingscrews

b. Bolt and clip assemblies with attachingnuts.

c. Integral studswith attachingnuts.

ci. "Bath-tub" type snap-onclips.

e. Side loading type snap-onclips.

f. "W-base"type snap-inclips.

g. Weld-on studsand clips.

h. Snap-in studs on pre-instafled retainers.

i. Snap-in type studs and clips bayonettype- clip is an integral part of the stud.

j & k. Spring type self retained.

usedon "A-80" style - skylight molding attaching clip similar.

m. Stationary glass reveal molding weld studOldsmobile "A" only.

n. Joint clip

Before using the molding charts the following information will be helpful wheninstalling or removing exterior moldings.

1. Screw locations - the exact location for eachscrew is not shown or mentioned, but whenhidden, the general location is indicated bynaming the molding or other part which concealsthe screwand thereforemustbe removedto gain accessto the screw.

2. When a molding is overlappedthe overlappingmolding is indicated in the "Engageswithother molding" column and must be removedfirst.

To use the molding charts, use the followingprocedure:

1. Locate the illustration of the body. The illustrations are separatedby car line and body

GENERAL PRECAUTIONSWhen removing or installing any body exteriormolding certain precautions should be exercised.

1. Adjacent finishes should be protected withmasking tape to prevent dame to finish.

2. Proper tools and care should be employed toguardagainstmolding damage.

SEALING OPERATION

Although detailed sealing operationsfor each individual molding are notdescribedon the "MoldingRemoval Chart" the following information is givento permit a satisfactorysealingoperation.

Medium-bodied sealer or body caulking compoundare the sealers most frequently used to provideawatertightsealor for anti-rattlemeasures.

Holes in body panels for screws, bolts, or clipsthat would permit water to enterthe interior of the

* body should be sealedwith body caulkingcompoundor presealedscrews,nutsor clips.

Drip moldings require a 1/4" bead of medium-bodied sealer along the full length of the inner attaching surface. Door window scalps and centerpillar scalps require a 1/8" x 1/4" x 1/4" beadofcaulking compound at 5" intervals for anti-rattlepurposes.Pinchweldsrequire medium-bodiedsealer on both sides when pinchweld clips are used.The exception is the rear quarter plnchweld onconvertible styles which requires waterprooftapeover the entirepinchweld,prior to clip installation.

TOOLS AND CARE

The following groupsof moldings are listed with thenameor descriptionof the tool which is suitable formolding removal.

Roof Drip Scalps - pointedhook tool.

Reveal moldings around adhesivecaulked glass installations are retainedby either clips, which areattachedto the body opening by weld-on studs, orspecially designedweld-on studs Oldsmobile"A"styles which require no clips. A projectionon theclip or specialweld-onstud View "M", Fig. 17-2engagesthe reveal molding flange, retaining themolding between the clip or specialweld-on studand body metal. To disengagea molding from retaining clips, use appropriatetool see chart asshownin Figure 17-3.

If it Is necessaryto replacea damaged"bath-tub"molding clip, use the following procedurefor removal and installation:

a putty knife, under edgeof clip and hammertool until base of clip is cut approximatelyhalf-way through FIg. 17-4 then disengageclip from hole.

NOTE: In some cases,it may also be necessary to cut clip at opposite end of base.

2. Specialtool J-21214is requiredwheninstallingmetal bath-tub type clips.

3. No special tool Is needed to install a newplastic bath-tubetype clip.

If a weld stud on an outer panelbecomesdamagedor brokenoff, usethe following procedure:

The clips are of a sacrificing type, so that corrosion attacks the anode clip rather than the bodypanel.

Replacementclips are available as service parts.

If a zinc anodeclip attachingweld stud is damagedor broken off and replacementis necessary,thefollowing procedureshouldbe followed:

1. Drill a small hole adjacentto where the original stud was installed. Glass shouldbe protected and caution should be exercisedwhenmaking this replacement.

1. Replacementof damagedweld stud may berealizedwithout glass removal.

2. Install alternate10.096 as shownsealing screw orpound around clipseal.
