Lamp Life Basics

• Modern projectors have a maximum lamp life of 2000 or 3000 hours, typically

– Check your projector manual for maximum (rated) lamp life for your projector model.

• When a lamp reaches the maximum hours - it should be changed.

– Failure to do so can cause lamp shattering and potential damage to the projector, as well as a degraded projected image.

• Lamps grow dimmer with use.

– Most lamps will have lost nearly 50% or their original light output by the time they have reached the maximum lamp hours.

Ways to Extend Projector Lamp Life

• Set your projector to “Economy Mode”

– Economy mode or “Eco” mode is available on most modern projectors it’s actual name varies by brand of projector. Check your user manual for more information (NEC instructions in appendix at end of this presentation).

– Eco mode adds up to 1000 hours of extra life to your lamp by reducing the lamps light output by only 10%.

Ways to Extend Projector Lamp Life

• Keep your projector clean

– Allowing dust to accumulate in the filters or interior compartments of the projector can cause the lamp to run to hot and dim/fail prematurely

• Allow projector to cool down before unplugging or moving.

– Most projectors will run the fans for a few moments after the projector is powered off to cool the lamp and components do not unplug the unit or move the unit while hot as this can cause the lamp to fail.

Ways to Extend Projector Lamp Life

• Use manufacturer OEM lamps

– Less expensive aftermarket replacement lamps often fail before the maximum lamp hours, OEM lamps are more likely to last the full time.

• Do not turn projector on if the projectors operating environment is below 40 degrees

– The sudden increase in temperature from a very cold temperature can cause the lamp to fail.

Ways to Extend Projector Lamp Life

• Turn the projector off if you will not be using it for more than 30 minutes

• If you will be using it within 30 minutes, leave it on

– Each time the lamp is fired up it takes up to 30 minutes of lamp life, turning the projector on and off every few minutes will greatly reduce lamp life.

• Set a shutdown timer

– If projectors are not being turned off after use by staff a shutdown timer can be set to automatically turn off the projector. The projector will turn off at the set time interval after losing input signal.

– NEC shutdown time instructions in Appendix.
