NEW RECIPE

KFC suddenly has a great idea …A big-rig hauling frozen chicken collided with a truck carrying bees in Southern California on Monday, igniting a fireball that quickly cooked the chicken. The truck with the chickens burst into flames and was incinerated, but the driver escaped with minor injuries. The driver hauling the bees was not hurt, although highway patrol officers on the scene reported bees buzzing everywhere. (AP)

EVIDENCE

Tough to blame cat for this oneVeterinarians say a dog is recovering after surgery to remove parts of a pair of calf-high leather boots the animal had eaten. The Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Center in Philadelphia said the 4-year-old mixed breed named Vince ate parts of both boots on Friday. Specialists said the volume consumed was so large that the dog’s stomach was unable to digest the material properly. (AP)

EXERTIONS

All that crime-committing can make a man tired, you know?Officials say a Florida man suspected of stealing a car took off on foot from a traffic stop Sunday and briefly eluded deputies while he grabbed a nap under a nearby trailer. Officials said deputies initially tried to stop Kevin Lee Barbour after noticing his vehicle didn’t have tag lights. The Pensacola News Journal reports deputies followed the sound of Barbour’s snoring to find him. (AP)

FURNISHINGS The Rayburn House Office Building is a labyrinth of beige. Then, there’s Rep. Aaron Schock’s new digs.

Bright red walls. A gold-col-ored wall sconce. A Federal-style bull’s-eye mirror with an eagle perched on top. And this is just the Illinois Republican’s outer office.

“It’s actually based off of the red room in ‘Downton Abbey,’ ”

said the woman behind the front desk.

This was a bold room. But the confidence was a mirage. For on

Capitol Hill, caution is king when it comes to the micromanage-ment of one’s image.

And sometimes, a friendly outsider can inadvertently ruin a communications director’s day.

A woman popped out. “Want to see the rest?” she asked.

She introduced herself as An-nie Brahler, the interior decorator whose company is called Euro Trash. She guided me to Schock’s

private office, another dramatic red room. This one with a drippy crystal chandelier, a table propped up by two eagles and massive ar-rangements of pheasant feathers.

Then, my phone rang.It was Schock’s communica-

tions director, Benjamin Cole.“Are you taking pictures of the

office?” he asked. “Who told you you could do that? … OK, stay where you are. You’ve created a bit of a crisis in the office.”

A staff member then came and asked me to please delete the photos. So started a day of

back-and-forths with a congress-man’s office about interior design. Washington has always been more “Veep” than “House of Cards.”

Schock, 33, is a rising star in the Republican Party. He’s young, has six-pack abs and is a prodigious fundraiser. His Instagram feed features him hiking across gla-ciers and tangoing on the streets of Buenos Aires, Argentina.

A unique office would hardly be surprising; it would just be an-other interesting fact about a con-gressman who has built a brand as not just another politician. So

why was this a crisis?“You’ve got a member [of Con-

gress] willing to talk to you about other things,” Cole said on the phone. “Why sour it by rushing to write some gossipy piece?”

The magnitude of this manu-factured PR catastrophe seemed to elude Brahler, who lives in Il-linois. She was happy to discuss her work, saying she didn’t get why the staff acted so “prickly.”

Brahler offered her services for free, according to Schock’s office, although he had to pay for the ob-jects. While his new office takes a bit of inspiration from “Downton Abbey,” it’s not a replica.

“The congressman hasn’t even seen the office yet,” Cole told me later. “Surely, it wouldn’t be fair for you to write about his office until he has the chance to see it.”

I told him if I could be there when Schock first saw the office, I would hold off till then. Cole agreed, and we reached the Red Walls Accord of 2015.

That is, until Schock decided he wasn’t interested.

“He’s happy to talk to you, just not about the office,” Cole said, sounding very tired of the ordeal. “I’m really sorry and want you to know this is not fun for me.” BEN TERRIS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

MR. MANNERSCharlie Sheen deemed unfit to use silverwareA tipster tells the Post’s Reliable Source that Charlie Sheen had lunch Monday at D.C.’s Charlie Palmer Steak with dad Martin Sheen. The staff was asked to remove the silverware from the younger Sheen because, wait for it, he kept “banging it on things.” Sans utensils, Charlie ate his salad with bare hands.

Old Soldiers’ Home plots developmentTHE DISTRICTWith its rolling hills, the Armed Forces Retirement Home, located on 272 acres in Northwest, pro-vides veterans a bucolic setting in the middle of the city.

But the home is also in need of a funding source to provide for its future. Next month the Old Soldiers’ Home, as it is often referred, will begin seeking a pri-vate partner capable of develop-ing up to 80 acres of its campus.

The master plan calls for an entire neighborhood’s worth of housing, offices, medical facili-ties, retail and a hotel in the south-eastern corner of the property. It would be larger than the one planned for 67 acres on the for-mer Walter Reed Army Hospital.

It leaves the majority of the property as is, including veterans’ housing, gardens, trails and a golf course, as well as President Abra-ham Lincoln’s summer cottage.

It also could put the home on permanently stable financial footing. The home relies on a trust fund for its operations, and it has been planning to redevelop part of its campus in order to sup-port it since before the recession.

The recession derailed an ear-lier plan, but its prospects have likely improved in the intervening years. Home prices in the areas surrounding the property — in-cluding Petworth, Park View and Brookland — have spiked.

Still, the project is likely to stir intense feelings because it is in such close proximity to residen-tial neighborhoods, some of which have advocated for more access to parks and open spaces.

“It’s probably the last great, large tract of land to be devel-oped in D.C.,” said John Gibb, who has been hired to market the project. JONATHAN O’CONNELL

The proposals The school would be called “Marion S. Barry Jr. University of the District of Columbia,” or MBUDC. Students would have tuition and fees of roughly $3,700 per semester paid for if they maintain a 2.0 GPA, complete studies within two years, and participate in community service and mentoring programs.

The barriers Council Chairman Phil Mendelson called the proposal to rename the university “premature” and said he expects a commission to be formed to consider how to honor Barry’s legacy. UDC officials also said they hadn’t been consulted on either plan.

The precedentsThe program could be the first to implement President Barack Obama’s Promise plan to spend billions to make associates degrees reachable for free. As for naming a school after Barry, that was one of the running jokesin the 1996 movie “High School High,” featuring John Lovitz as a teacher at “Marion Barry High.”

D.C. Council member Vincent Orange on Tuesday introduced a bill that would overhaul the University of the District of Columbia, renaming it after Marion Barry and transitioning it to a tuition-free community college. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

TRANSPORTATION

The amount of federal aid that President Barack Obama’s transportation budget proposal includes for a light-rail Purple Line

in the Maryland suburbs, even as state support for the transit project remains uncertain. Meanwhile, a local transit group advocating for the Purple Line has sued the Town of Chevy Chase, alleging that it violated public records law by being “resistant” to releasing documents about the town’s opposition to the line. TRANSPORTATIONMetro speed restrictions could add to travel timeIf you think your train is going a little slower than usual, it is not your imagination. Metro announced Tuesday that it has put in place some speed restrictions during the cold weather months. Trains will be slowing down on some portions of track as a safety precaution to prevent incidents with cracked or broken rails, the transit agency said. Trains that travel at 59 mph will be restricted to go at 40 mph in some locations; in other areas where trains travel at 55 mph, the speed will be limited to 35 mph, Metro said. These types of speed restrictions are not uncommon.(THE WASHINGTON POST)

MONTGOMERY COUNTYMd. superintendent will step down in two weeksMontgomery County, Md., Superintendent Joshua Starr will step down in two weeks, ending behind-the-scenes deliberations about his future amid reports that a majority of the board did not have confidence in his ability to improve the performance of Maryland’s largest school system. School officials gave no immediate explanation for Starr’s departure from the district of 154,000 students, where he was welcomed in 2011 as a man of infectious personality and big ideas. In a statement, the board of education said members voted unanimously Tuesday to approve a “departure agreement.” (TWP)

MARYLANDMd. Democrats aim to protect education funds Maryland Democrats, demoralized by their party’s losses in November, have found a rallying cry: protect education spending. Senior members of the House and the Senate joined the state’s largest teachers union on Tuesday to protest a budget proposal by Gov. Larry Hogan that would curb planned funding of K-12 education in the coming fiscal year. (TWP)

D.C. POLITICS

Bowser-backed candidates are in funding lead Two candidates backed by Mayor Muriel Bowser have built big fundraising leads ahead of an April 28 special election to fill a pair of D.C. Council seats, according to financial reports filed Monday. Brandon Todd, a Democrat seeking the Ward 4 seat Bowser vacated, reported adding $231,541 to his campaign coffers, leaving him with $267,000 to spend in his race against as many as 13 rivals. LaRuby May, a Democrat pursuing the Ward 8 seat previously held by the late Marion Barry, reported raising $177,405, with nearly all of it unspent in a race that has attracted 15 other candidates. Both candidates, who played key roles in Bowser’s successful mayoral campaign, more than tripled the fundraising of their nearest rivals, who filed reports ahead of the midnight deadline. Papers show Rosa Parks did more than sit down

THE DISTRICTWhen Rosa Parks was a little girl in rural Alabama, she would stay up at night, keeping watch with her grandfather as he stood guard with a shotgun.

Klansmen often terrorized black communities in the early 1900s, and Parks’ grandfather had their house boarded up for protection. But Parks longed for a showdown.

“I wanted to see him kill a Ku-Kluxer,” the renowned civil rights leader wrote years later.

They sounded like hard words for the small, bespectacled woman who is most famous for refusing to give up her seat to whites on an Alabama bus in 1955.

But a cache of Parks’ papers set to be unveiled Tuesday at the

Library of Congress portrays a battle-tested activist who had been steeped in the struggle against white violence since childhood.

The trove, parts of which were unknown to historians, also shows Parks as a woman devoted to her family, especially to her mother and husband, Raymond.

The material is part of the col-lection of Parks’ belongings that was deposited with the library in September on a 10-year loan.

Parks died in Detroit in 2005 at the age of 92, famous for a soli-tary act of defiance that helped launch the modern civil rights movement.

The material opens to re-searchers today, Parks’ birth-day, and a small section of it will be on display from March 2 to

March 30. Other parts will jointhe library’s civil rights exhibit, which runs through Sept. 12.

The artifacts included Parks’tiny Bible and a snapshot of thehouse where she was born in 1913.

There are little-known photosof her husband, who was also anactivist and who quietly supportedher and weathered death threatsas she traveled the country.

And there are pages andpages of writing that recordher thoughts about the plight ofAfrican-Americans, bits of herbiography and prayers that shewrote on anything she could find.

“These are the things thatwere most dear to her,” saidMaricia Battle, a curator ofphotography at the library.MICHAEL E. RUANE (THE WASHINGTON POST)

nation+worldDENVERNTSB: Selfies linked to plane crash that killed 2Selfies were a likely factor in a small-plane crash near Denver last May that killed the pilot and his passenger, according to a National Transportation Safety Board report. The report said that recordings from a GoPro camera show the pilot and other passengers taking photos of themselves with their phones, even using the flash, during flights in the hours leading up to the crash. Although there was no video of the deadly flight, evidence of the pilot’s previous phone use that day makes it likely it contributed to his loss of control, investigators said. (AP)

EDUCATIONBig financial gap among who finishes collegeThere is a growing divide between who earns a bachelor’s degree by age 24, according to a report by the Alliance for Higher Education and Democracy and the Pell Institute for the Study of Opportunity in Higher Education. The percentage of students from the lowest-income families — $34,160 a year or less — earning a bachelor’s degree has inched up 3 points since 1970, from 6 to 9 percent by 2013. College completion for students from the wealthiest families — $108,650 or more a year — has climbed from 44 to 77 percent. (AP)

Cheating takes on new meaning in this versionTo celebrate the 80th anniversary of Monopoly’s arrival in France, toymaker Hasbro will produce 30,000 specially branded sets of the game for its French customers — and 80 of those will come with real cash inside, The Verge reports. Only one of the sets will replace every Monopoly bill with real euros. That box will contain the equivalent of $23,348. Ten of the games will have some real twenties, fifties and hundreds, adding up to roughly $340 in real money. The remaining 69 sets will have real tens and twenties for a total of about $170. Hasbro says the boxes with real euros are slightly thicker but weigh the same as others. (EXPRESS)

Video said to show pilot burned aliveAMMAN, JORDANA video released online Tuesday purportedly showed a Jordanian pilot captured by the Islamic State extremist group in Syria being burned to death by his captors following a weeklong drama over a possible prisoner exchange.

Jordan threatened a harsh re-sponse to the killing of Lt. Muath Al-Kaseasbeh, 26, who fell into the hands of the militants in De-cember when his F-16 crashed near Raqqa, Syria. He was the only pilot from the U.S.-led coali-tion to have been captured to date.

King Abdullah II of Jordan, who is in Washington, spoke on Jordan TV, urging all Jordanians to unite. Confirming the pilot’s death, the king said “it’s the duty of all of us to stand united and show the real

values of Jordanians in the face of these hardships.”

However, in the pilot’s home village of Ai, violent protests erupted and a government office was set on fire. Witnesses said the situation was tense and riot police were patrolling the streets.

At a tribal meeting place where the pilot’s relatives have waited for weeks for word on his fate, family members wept when hearing about his death. Outside, hundreds of people later took to the streets, chanting.

The video appeared aimed at pressuring Jordan to leave the coalition that has been battling to roll back the Islamic State. But officials said the killing would only toughen Jordan’s stance. OMAR AKOUR AND JOSEPH KRAUSS (AP)

President Barack Obama’s 2016 budget, released Monday, would change the way federal agencies operate and treat their employees. Here’s a look at what some of the proposals would do. JOSH HICKS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Obama’s budget:4 ways it helpsfederal workers

The workforce would growThe budget would add 34,000 employees to the federal workforce next year. Federal employment, excluding postal staff, would grow 1.6 percent, for a total of about 2.14 million civilian and military personnel. The Veterans Affairs and Treasury departments would see some of the biggest gains.

Workers would receive a raiseObama asked for a 1.3 percent pay raise for civilian federal workers and military personnel. For the past two years, he recommended 1 percent raises, which Congress allowed to take effect. During Obama’s presidency, the average increase has been lower than any time since at least 1970.

The government would provide paid family leaveIn addition to the six weeks of paid sick leave that Obama last month told agencies to give employees with new children, the president is now calling on Congress to pass legislation to provide another six weeks of paid parental leave for the federal workforce.

What’s really in herbal supplements? The office of New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman commissioned DNA testing on hundreds of bottles of herbal supplements. It found four out of five contained none of the herbs on the label. Here’s what that means. (AP/THE WASHINGTON POST)

That little pill may not contain what you think

Who was selling what products?GNC, Target, Wal-Mart and Walgreen Co. sold supplements that either couldn’t be verified to contain the labeled substance or that contained ingredients not listed on the label, Schneiderman’s office said. The supplements, including echinacea, ginseng, garlic, ginkgo biloba and saw palmetto, were contaminated with substances including rice, beans, pine, asparagus, primrose, wheat, houseplant and wild carrot.

Wait, 4 percent?! Is that even possible?Harvard Medical School assistant professor Pieter Cohen, an expert on supplement safety, told The New York Times that the test results were so extreme he found them hard to accept. He said that the manufacturing process may have destroyed some of the ingredients’ DNA, rendering the DNA barcode test ineffective. On the other hand, he said, “if this data is accurate, then it is an unbelievably devastating indictment of the industry.”

How did they test the ingredients? The tests were conducted using a process called DNA barcoding, which identifies individual ingredients through a kind of “genetic fingerprinting.” Overall, 21 percent of the test results from store brand herbal supplements contained DNA from the plants listed on the labels. The retailer with the poorest showing was Wal-Mart, where only 4 percent of the products tested showed DNA from the plants listed on the labels.

What are the companies doing?Wal-Mart spokesman Brian Nick said the company is immediately reaching out to suppliers and will take appropriate action. Walgreen and GNC pledged to cooperate with the attorney general. “We take these issues very seriously and as a precautionary measure, we are in the process of removing these products from our shelves as we review this matter further,” Walgreen spokesman James Graham said.

Shopping for supplements? Reading the label may be misleading, according to New York’s attorney general.

‘Nothing is sacred’ in Holy Land’s ‘SNL’HERZLIYA, ISRAEL The hit Israeli satirical TV show “A Wonderful Land” is back on the air for a 12th season, and its timing is perfect.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu finds himself in a tight race with challenger Isaac Herzog leading up to March 17 elections, and they’re both ripe to be skewered on a show described as the “Saturday Night Live” of the Holy Land, whose actors im-personate with wicked aim the country’s political class.

“The timing is a gift, but then again Israel is the gift that keeps on giving for the satirist,” said executive producer Muli Segev.

“A Wonderful Land” has be-come a kind of institution. More than 917,000 people tuned in last

month for the season opener, making it the second-most watched show of the week.

The episode began with a spoof of the Israeli leaders as char-acters from “Star Wars,” withNetanyahu as the dark lord Em-peror Palpatine and Herzog as Luke Skywalker. The Emperor vows he cannot be defeated while flanked by his Royal Guards, who are bearded ultra-Orthodox Jews dressed in stormtrooper cos-tumes. Skywalker keeps trying to turn on his lightsaber, but thebeam is small and … inadequate.

The gags aren’t subtle.“Nothing is sacred,” Segev said.

Britain’s House of Commons voted Tuesday to allow DNA from three parents to be used for in vitro fertilization.

‘Three-parent’ babies on horizon in U.K.?HEALTHBritain moved a step closer Tuesday to becoming the first country to formally allow so-called “three-parent” babies as lawmakers gave strong backing to a plan for fertility labs to use genetic material from a mother, father and a female donor.

The debate in the House of Commons reflected the deep passions on both sides of the is-sue: whether to permit in vitro procedures that seek to avoid passing along inherited and incurable diseases from mito-chondrial DNA, which is carried from mother to child.

Supporters say it would of-fer hope to families who would otherwise risk passing along diseases to their offspring. But a wide range of critics question the ethics of the proposals.

The proposal passed 382-128 and moved to Parliament’s upper

chamber, the House of Lords, which is expected to vote soon on the measure. Commentators say the first “three-parent” baby could be born next year if the changes move ahead.

Lisa Jardine, the former chair of Human Fertilization and Em-bryology Authority, Britain’s fertility regulator, dismissed safety concerns, telling BBC Radio 4 that “all of those issues have been investigated.”

Religious leaders have voiced concerns, warning that more research needs to be done.

“Without a clearer picture of the role mitochondria play in the transfer of hereditary characteristics, the church does not feel it would be responsible to change the law at this time,” Brendan McCarthy, the Church of England’s national adviser on medical ethics, recently told the Daily Telegraph.

If the procedure gets the green light, babies born would have all the key genetic material from their mother and father, and just a small amount of DNA from a donor female.

The aim is to help the esti-mated 2,473 women in the U.K. at risk of passing on possibly disease-triggering mitochondrial DNA to their children.

Still, should the law change, babies could be born with a very small fraction of their DNA from

a female donor. Opponents to the proposed legislative change say this could be the beginning of a slippery slope.

A Conservative member of Parliament, Jacob Rees-Mogg, told the BBC: “At the moment, there is a very clear boundary that babies cannot be genetically altered, and that once you de-cided that you can, … it’s merely a matter of degree as to what you do next.”

The bulk of the scientific com-munity in Britain, however, ap-peared to welcome the result of the vote.

“I don’t agree with the slippery slope argument at all,” said pro-fessor Alison Murdoch of New-castle University. “By having a legal framework that says you can do this, but you can’t do the other without criminal sanctions, there is an absolute barrier.” KARLA ADAM (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Popular Egypt satirist takes fellowship post at Harvard Sierra Leone officials criticize easing of Ebola travel rules U.N. criticizes Ukraine fighting tactics as death toll hits 5,358

The science behind itHOW IT WORKS: The technique takes a mitochondria from a healthy female donor and combines it with the DNA of two parents at risk of passing on certain genetic disorders — such as muscular dystrophy — in an in vitro fertilization.

WHAT’S A MITOCHONDRIA? Often called the “power plants” of the cell, the mitochondria converts energy from food into energy that can power a cell.

HOW COMMON IS IT? Mitochondrial diseases can cause life-threatening problems, and it’s estimated that as many as 4,000 children are born with such conditions in the United States each year. The techniques would likely be used about a dozen times a year in British women with faulty mitochondria.

IS IT REALLY THREE PARENTS? More like 2.001 parents, Gillian Lockwood, a reproductive ethicist, told the BBC. “Less than a tenth of one per cent of the genome is actually going to be affected. It is not part of what makes us genetically who we are,” she said. (TWP/AP)

Few expected Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to fade into the political twilight when he packed up his things at the Iranian president’s office in 2013.

He’s too young. Too ambitious. Too comfortably combative.

He may now be plotting the trajectory of his return. Ahmadinejad on Sunday unveiled a website that has added to speculation that Iran has not seen the last of him.

The site, ahmadinejad.ir, includes the slogan “We will come soon” and an image of a smiling Ahmadinejad holding up his right hand in a mix of friendly wave and campaign-style pomp.

“Ahmadinejad is not going to leave the scene,” said Rasool Nafisi, an Iranian affairs analyst at Strayer University in Herndon. “But I don’t think he’s clear yet on his next move. This is a way to try to test some political traction.”

That might not be so easy. Ahmadinejad left on sour terms with Iran’s ruling clerics, who have the ability to decide which candidates can make the ballot.

An online presence for politicos is nothing new in Iran, which gives mainstream political officials a wide berth on the Web even as authorities clamp down on cyber-dissent. Ahmadinejad, however, is no ordinary figure. There are almost no middle-of-the road comments on the new website.

“Absurd,” said one message. “Inspiring,” said another. BRIAN MURPHY

Divers discover six more bodies in AirAsia wreckage, bringing the total to 90 U.N.’s highest court says Croatia did not commit genocide against Serbs in 1995 campaign

“I’m not against vaccines, I just want a safer schedule,” said Kim Taylor, a graphic designer in Edgewater, Md., whose son Noah was diagnosed with autism at age 3. “It’s just very difficult to talk to people about it right now.”

Backlash spreads with virus

HEALTHThe letter arrived in the midst of a growing furor about the country’s worst measles outbreak in years.

Cindy Shay, a health-care law-yer, had been taking her children to Bayside Pediatrics in Annapo-lis for a decade when her doctor wrote last month that he couldn’t continue as their pediatrician.

Her twin 13-year-olds are up to date on all state-mandated vac-cines, Shay said. But she was told the practice also wants them to have boosters and new vaccines recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Academy of Pediatrics. Shay has questions, as she has since her son was diag-nosed with autism shortly before his second birthday.

It’s a tough time for parents to express doubts about vaccines. The measles outbreak that began at Disneyland last December has spread to 14 states and infected more than 100 people, the CDC re-ported Monday. Measles’ march, officials say, has been fueled by pockets of unvaccinated children.

The debate has become both medical and political. The outrage has been ferocious, with parents condemning “anti-vaxxers” for putting other people’s kids at risk.

The backlash has spread through pediatric practices, pre-schools and Listservs. Parents who harbor doubts about vaccines say they feel like they’re flunking a new litmus test for sanity.

“I get angry that we’re all lumped together as anti-vaxx-ers,” said Alison Hamilton, who has a 14-year-old daughter with autism. “Parents who are just asking questions are labeled as crazy, as selfish. We’re not all

followers of Jenny McCarthy.”While Shay doesn’t necessar-

ily attribute her son’s autism to the battery of shots he got as an infant, she began to worry about their number and intensity in light of the sharp rise in food allergies and auto-immune disorders.

Until last month, Shay said her doctors have been willing to work with her concerns. Now, Bayside won’t continue seeing her daugh-ter unless she gets a range of new shots: boosters for tetanus, polio, chicken pox and MMR and new vaccines for meningitis and human papillomavirus (HPV).

Shay thinks the meningitis shot may be a good idea. But she’s hesitant about the others, which are not required by the state.

Pediatricians say they, too, are torn between wanting to care for every child and ensuring that “herd immunity” isn’t eroded.

Gary Bergman, a pediatrician who practices in Alexandria, said he doesn’t admit unvaccinated children in the first place. “I tell parents, ‘I respect your feelings

but I disagree with you. The sci-ence just isn’t there,’ ” he said.

The alleged link between vac-cinations and autism was first raised in a small 1998 study by a British doctor whose work has since been widely discredited. The journal that published the study retracted it in 2010.

But Rita Montoya wasn’t wor-ried about autism when she began to question the heavy slate of im-munizations she was expected to approve for her son. The D.C. mom did fear putting so much stress on her baby’s fledgling immune system.

She warily asked for advice on the same Listserv where she had seen another woman “bul-lied” for questioning the vaccine schedule. But when she and her husband expressed their interest in slowing the regime, the doctor wouldn’t budge.

“I’m a pretty strong-willed per-son, and I felt very pushed along,” Montoya said. “We got more than I was really comfortable with.” STEVE HENDRIX (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Why is measles spreading? And other questions Here is some information needed to understand the burgeoning debate about measles, which was eliminated from the U.S. in 2000 but is resurgent today. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

How is measles spread? The virus can live on a surface or hang in the air for as long as two hours after an infected person has coughed or sneezed. The CDC says 90 percent of unvaccinated people can get it from being near one infected person.

How effective is the measles vaccine? The first dose, given at 12 months old, is 95 percent effective. The second dose, given at age 4 to 6 years, improves the odds to 98 or 99 percent.

Why is measles spreading in the U.S.? The latest outbreak was likely caused by travelers bringing the virus into the U.S. In California, where the rate of the unvaccinated is high, it is more easily spread. Also, children less than a year old typically are not vaccinated, because their immune systems are not ready. And for medical reasons, some people can’t be immunized.

Has it arrived in D.C.? The District said Tuesday that a case of measles linked to international travel has been confirmed in D.C.

“I have heard of many tragic cases of walking, talking

normal children who wound up with profound mental disorders after vaccines.”

Freshman point guard Melo Trimble

leads Maryland in scoring, averaging

15.7 points a game.

RICK SNIDER | SPORTS GURU

Tracking Trimble: A freshman year unlike any other?

Is Melo Trimble the best Maryland freshman ever?

It’s a list that probably begins and ends with Joe Smith, who was named to the All-ACC first team as a freshman in 1993-94. A year later, he was the first overall pick in the NBA draft.

But Trimble has a chance to challenge Smith and several other Terps legends after a series of big games. The point guard scored 31 points against Arizona State in his fourth career game and had 27 versus Northwestern on Jan. 25. He scored in double-digits in 20 of 21 games this season before crashing against Ohio State last Thursday with just three points on 0-for-8 shooting.

Ouch — it will be tough to chase Adrian Branch, John Lu-cas, Brad Davis, Steve Blake and Buck Williams with more games like that. (The only great Terps players over the past generation that weren’t stars as freshmen were Len Bias, Juan Dixon and Greivis Vasquez.)

Trimble needs to bounce back as No. 17 Maryland (18-4) hosts Penn State (14-8) tonight (8:30 p.m., BTN). The Terps are a Dez Wells last-second put-back away from three straight losses. The physical play of the Big Ten has worn down the Terps lately, with losses at Ohio State and Indiana.

Despite Maryland’s recent struggles, Trimble has revital-ized the program — much like Smith did in the ’90s. The Terps haven’t made the NCAA

tournament since 2010, but Trimble, a highly touted guard out of Bishop O’Connell High, is averaging a team-high 15.7 points a game and has made Maryland relevant again. Bar-ring a late freefall, the Terps will be back in the NCAA tournament in March.

With some big games over the final weeks, Trimble could eclipse Branch, who’s consid-ered second to Smith in the upper echelon of Maryland’s freshman greats. In 1982, Maryland lost four starters, including Albert King and Williams, and coach Lefty Driesell went to a pre-shot clock style of slow ball. The Terps averaged only 61 points, its lowest from 1953 to present, but Branch averaged 15.2 per game. He lost ACC rookie of

the year honors to Michael Jor-dan despite scoring 29 points in an upset win over Virginia, which was 24-1 at the time.

Trimble’s playing style, though, resembles that of Lucas, who joined a standout Maryland lineup in 1972-73 to average 14.2 points and 5.9 assists. The Terps didn’t need Lucas to be great, but he was from the start — much like Trimble.

Two years later, Davis joined Lucas in the backcourt to average 12.6 points while leading the team in assists.

Then there was Williams, who averaged an ACC-leading 10.8 rebounds a game in 1979 and was named conference rookie of the year.

Blake was like Davis in the way he ran the offense as a freshman. In his junior season, Blake led the Terps to a na-tional title in 2002.

Trimble’s predecessors all went on to standout college careers, some leaving early for the NBA. Now it’s up to Trimble to see how far he can take this Terps team.

CYCLINGPolice: Armstrong hit cars, blamed girlfriendDisgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong hit two parked cars after a night of partying in Aspen but agreed to let his longtime girlfriend take the blame to avoid national attention, police reports show. Aspen police cited Armstrong with failing to report an accident and speeding weeks after the Dec. 28 accident, but only after his girlfriend, Anna Hansen, admitted to lying for him. Hansen initially told police she had been driving home from an Aspen Art Museum party when she lost control of Armstrong’s GMC Yukon on the icy roads, hitting the cars. (AP)

NFLAdding fake crowd noise was wrong, Blank saysFalcons owner Arthur Blank said Tuesday he has seen enough of the NFL’s investigation of fake crowd noise at Atlanta’s home games to acknowledge wrongdoing. The NFL is trying to determine if the Falcons pumped artificial crowd noise into the Georgia Dome for home games the past two years. Apparently, the answer is yes. Blank had a quick response when asked if there was a fine line for crowd noise not allowed by the league. “It’s not really a fine line,” Blank said. “I think what we’ve done in 2013 and 2014 was wrong.” (AP)

Hawks forward Paul Millsap, left, and point guard Jeff Teague were both named to the East All-Star team.

Hawks’ magical season marked by historic run

NBAThe Hawks have been in a long-term relationship with mediocre and the organization had an off-season in which the owner de-cided to sell after the release of a racially insensitive email and the general manager went on leave after reading a scouting report that questioned the character of an all-star player because “he’s got some African in him.”

The Hawks, who host the Wiz-ards tonight, have distanced themselves from controversy with a magical season in which they have the most wins in the NBA and staged the fifth-longest winning streak in league history.

“I’ve seen heaven and hell in the same year,” Hawks chief executive Steve Koonin said. “There is nobody in the world who is not surprised.”

For second-year coach Mike Budenholzer, the Hawks are 40-9

because they have a collection of hard-working professionals will-ing to share the ball and the suc-cess. A Gregg Popovich disciple from his 17-year apprenticeship with the Spurs, Budenholzer has brought a similarly efficient scheme to Atlanta.

Parallels in style and personnel to the five-time champs have led to the Hawks often being referred to as “Spurs East.”

“We all have a ton of respect, the whole league has a ton of re-spect for the Spurs,” Budenholzer said. “But we’re trying to do a lot of things our own way and with

our own players.”Minnesota coach Flip Saunders

called the nickname “unfair” but added, “You call ’em ‘Spurs East’ because they play the way every coach wants to play.”

The Hawks’ five starters Paul Millsap, Jeff Teague, Al Horford, Kyle Korver and DeMarre Carroll average between 17.2 points and 11.7 points, making it difficult for opposing teams to focus on stop-ping one or two primary scorers.

The Hawks are 33-3 since Thanksgiving — a run that even mystifies the players. When asked if he could have envisioned this kind of success, Teague said, “I’m not going to lie and say I could.”

Teague added that Budenhol-zer won’t allow this team to get complacent.

“You can never put a smile on his face,” the point guard said. “I don’t care what you do. He just doesn’t smile. I think it just trickles down to the team.”

What would put a smile on his face? Teague said, “Probably win a championship.” MICHAEL LEE

Brady to give Butler his MVP truckPatriots quarterback Tom Brady says he “would love to” give the truck he got for winning his third Super Bowl MVP to defensive back Malcolm Butler. Butler made the game-saving interception at the goal line in the final minute of Sunday night’s 28-24 victory over the Seattle Seahawks. Brady said on WEEI radio in Boston on Tuesday he wants to see that Butler gets the truck. Said Brady: “I’m going to figure out how to make that work.” Meanwhile, Butler, below, took to Twitter on Tuesday to thank the Patriots organization for giving him a chance. “What an amazing few days. Tired but enjoying the ride,” the undrafted rookie out of West Alabama wrote. (AP)

Breana Britt, 16Bree’s Sweet Treats, Accokeek, Md.

Britt balances being a junior at St. Mary’s Ryken High School with serving as the head baker at Bree’s Sweet Treats, a cafe where she churns out cupcakes, brownies, pies, cake pops and cookies.

Abu Uqdah, 14youngurbanfoodie.blogspot.com

Northwest D.C. resident Abu Uqdah’s homeschoolingallows him to put in four hours of schoolwork before he’s free to test recipes for pies, which are available for purchase through his blog, Young Urban Foodie. He accepted close to 50 orders during the holidays last year.

Sherry lay-back Mockingbird Hill, 1843 Seventh St. NW; 202-316-9396

Using a Venenciador (a wandlike contraption with a miniature cup on one end that’s used to test sherry as it ages in a cask), Mockingbird Hill co-owner Chantal Tseng drizzles shots of Fino sherry directly into guests’ mouths while they crane their heads back. The fortified wine has hints of yeast and oyster shells, Tseng says. “Sometimes people will get lucky, and I’ll only get a drop on their cheek,” Tseng says of the precarious pour. “That’s why we only charge $2 for it. You have to be OK with getting a little wet.”

The very nature of a shot — small

glass, quick swallow, pungent chaser

to mask the taste — is designed to

get the unpleasant experience over

with as quickly as possible. Have you

ever considered that maybe you’re

just taking the wrong shots? Many

local restaurants and bars are getting

creative with their delivery methods,

introducing more playful ways to

imbibe than the traditional tequila-

lime-wince routine. “We’re a big fan

of interactive drinking experiences,”

says Randy Taylor, the manager of

Barcelona, where you can take a shot

of sherry through a hollowed-out beef

bone. “There’s something primal

about it, and there’s a real wow factor.”

Following are some of the city’s most

fun and inventive shot alternatives

(bibs included).

HOLLEY SIMMONS (EXPRESS)

D.C. restaurants and bars have a little fun with the much-dreaded bar shot

Ice cream luge Pop’s SeaBar, 1817 Columbia Road NW; 202-534-3933

Pop’s SeaBar’s ice cream luge includes an unlikely combination of amaro and mint. “It’s a high-class digestive meets a mint chocolate chip bodega sandwich,” says co-owner Justin Abad. It goes down easily because hints of anise complement the mint. Using their tongues, guests create a channel on the long side of the ice cream sandwich and pour a shot of amaro from a dairy creamer at the top. Lobster bibs are encouraged and Wet-Naps come at no charge. “We let people go at their own pace,” Abad says. “It’s easier.”

Spherified pickle-back Rogue 24, 922 N St. NW; 202-408-9724

For a gourmet spin on the dive-bar classic, this gastronomic playground from chef R.J. Cooper offers a shot of Kentucky Vintage bourbon served with a chaser of spherified pickle juice. “Rather than use pickle juice from questionable origin, we make our own,” says Zachary Faden, a member of Rogue 24’s beverage team. The gelled juice is dipped into a mixture containing sodium alginate, which turns it into a burstable bubble. It’s available as part of Rogue 24’s 4x4 menu, which includes four dishes and four drinks ($44).

Bone luge Barcelona, 1622 14th St. NW; 202-588-5500

This off-menu offering is available only to those who order the Barcelona Mixed Grill — a board of meat including roasted beef marrow ($24.50). Using the bone in which the marrow is served as a luge, a server slowly pours a shot of sherry into your mouth, as pictured above. “As it comes down, it picks up savory tastes from the marrow and the salty and sweet really complement each other,” Taylor says. “We offer a bib, because we don’t want to pick up that dry-cleaning bill.” Taylor says the bone luge is a hit with groups.

These two budding bakers combine flour and water in ways that belie their age. Learn more at readexpress.com. LAURA HAYES (FOR EXPRESS)

Harper Lee set to publish new novelBOOKSF. Scott Fitzgerald famously claimed, “There are no second acts in American lives,” but Harper Lee is out to prove him wrong. The author will publish her second novel this summer. “Go Set a Watchman” was writ-ten more than 50 years ago — be-fore her Pulitzer Prize-winning classic, “To Kill a Mockingbird.”

In a statement, the 88-year-old author said she wrote “Go Set a Watchman” about a woman named Scout who returns home to visit her father, Atticus. Her editor asked her to rewrite it from the point of view of Scout as a child. “I was a first-time writer,” Lee said, “so I did as I was told.” The result was “To Kill a Mocking-bird,” published in 1960.

“I hadn’t realized [the origi-nal] had survived,” Lee said, “so was surprised and delighted when my dear friend and lawyer

Tonja Carter discovered it. … I am humbled and amazed that this will now be published after all these years.”

Lee has led a private life, and she rarely appears in public. In 2007, President George W. Bush bestowed upon her a Presidential Medal of Freedom. In 2011, Pres-ident Barack Obama honored her with the National Medal of Arts. RON CHARLES (THE WASHINGTON POST)

“We’ve been those who change the

“It takes a long, long time to ramp up a retail presence. (Just ask Samsung.)

And retail failure is really expensive. (Just ask RadioShack.)”

KATIE BENNER AT BLOOMBERGVIEW.COM suggests Amazon proceed cautiously if the online giant acquires some RadioShack locations after the chain files for bankruptcy. A source told Bloomberg that Amazon

is considering using the physical spaces to showcase its own products and serve as pickup and drop-off centers for online shoppers.

“All you Kathleens and Kalebs and Kaleels,

get to McDonough [Arena], posthaste.”

DAN STEINBERG AT WASHINGTONPOST.COM points out

who stands to benefit most from Georgetown University’s kale night

promotion during its Feb. 13 women’s basketball game. The first 100 fans

will get a free cup of kale Caesar salad. Anyone who has the letters K-A-L-E in

their name will get free admission.

“A few minutes sipping a cup of chocolate Fairlife and

then a cup of 2% Fairlife, the inside of my mouth had that malty feel that chases

a protein shake.” CHRIS PLANTE AT THEVERGE.COM

explains his experience with Fairlife, Coca-Cola’s new “premium milk” it will roll out nationally over the next

several weeks. The company says the drink is lactose free, with 50 percent

more protein, 30 percent more calcium and 50 percent less sugar

than regular milk.

“Does anybody under the age of 18 want to see ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’? Pretty sure kids who grew up on the Internet probably think

spanking and blindfolds are, like, so passe.”

KELLY FAIRCLOTH AT JEZEBEL.COM isn’t surprised the British Board of Film

Classification gave the “Fifty Shades of Grey” movie a rating of 18 — meaning no one under that age will be admitted. The movie, rated R in the U.S. and starring Jamie Dornan, right,

will be in theaters Feb. 13.

“Apparently ‘Just Say No’ extended beyond drugs.”

@CFARMERTWEET makes a somber observation after Buzzfeed reported Monday that former first lady Nancy Reagan refused a direct

call for assistance from Rock Hudson while he was in Paris seeking AIDS treatment in July 1985. The popular film star was close with the first lady and President Ronald Reagan, shown here with them at the White House

in 1984. Hudson was in France seeking an experimental AIDS drug, but the hospital where it was available refused to admit Hudson because he wasn’t French. His publicist contacted the White House for the president’s

assistance, but according to a note by a Reagan aide, Nancy agreed with a suggestion to refer Hudson to the U.S. Embassy. Hudson died three months later.

CONTROL FREAKSDiddy would prefer to exploit his son himself, thank you very muchDiddy has reportedly pulled his adopted son, Quincy Combs, from a planned role on “Empire.” When Diddy learned his son would have to sign over a portion of his own music rights to Fox, he “banned him from the show,” a source told the New York Post. Quincy, who just released his first single, is being considered for a role on the show’s second season. (EXPRESS)

COURTROOM DRAMA

In which we’re on nobody’s sideLindsay Lohan and her mother have filed a lawsuit accusing Fox News, TV host Sean Hannity and guest commentator Michelle Fields of defamation for claiming the actress and her mother did cocaine together. Court papers say Fields stated that Dina Lohan was doing cocaine with her daughter. The Lohans want the segment taken off Hannity’s website and are also seeking unspecified damages. Fox says it removed the clip from its archives and issued an on-air apol-ogy last year. The network says it will defend itself and was surprised the Lohans are now demanding compensation. (AP)

Mila + Ashton = definitely are marriedDuring an appearance Tuesday on “Ellen,” Mila Kunis remained mum on rumors that she has secretly married fiance Ashton Kutcher. Kutcher last month posted a Facebook photo of writing in the sand that read, “Happy New Year, [Love] the Kutchers.” “I don’t know, I don’t know,” Kunis said. “We could just be a plural. My daughter has his last name legally. So thus, there’s multiple Kutchers. He has a brother.” (EXPRESS)
