People benefiting from the pro- gramme are from the Maluti-a-Pho- fung and Nketoane Municipality. For- ty of them are cleaning the streets in Reitz while the others strive to keep Qwaqwa clean. According to Matefu Mokoena, communications manager at the Thabo Mofutsanyana District, all of them had signed the 12-month con- tract. He said they had started working in January. However, most of the people have pleaded with the municipality to em- ploy them on a full- time basis sight- ing different reasons for this. They said they had families to look after and asked what would happen to them if their contracts came to an end. Mokoena said they wished they were able to give the people perma- nent jobs, but due to limited financial resources they were unable to do so, hence the issue of job creation should be handled jointly by the government and the private sector. Mokoena said the EPWP guideline was to pay R66,45 per day, but they had decided to make it R80. He said the local municipality were the ones who had identified the people. Dimakatso Miya (31) said: “I want to thank our district for giving us this opportunity. Even though we are go- ing to work for 12 months only, at least they have done something for us.” Miya, who hailed from the Petsana location near Reitz, said she was hap- py with the salary that she had been receiving and added that she had been buying things out of her pocket. “I am mother to two children aged nine and one. We live with my mother who is a pensioner. “I wish the municipality can extend our contracts or make them perma- nent jobs so that we can work for our kids,” she said. Mojalefa Mphuthi (30), who worked as a security guard a few years ago, said: “They tried, but what irritated me was when they made late pay- ments. the Department of SocialDevelopment commemoratesthe International Day AgainstDrug Abuse and Illicit Traf-ficking in Bethlehem.The commemoration is

scheduled for today atthe Tiisetsang SecondarySchool Hall in Bohlokong,Bethlehem.It is expected to start at

10:00.The International Day

against Drug Abuse and IllicitTrafficking is held annuallyon 26 June by the whole worldas declared by the UnitedNations Office on Drugs andCrime.

This year the theme is Makehealth your “new high” in life,not drugs.Galaletsang Moncho, of

communications and market-ing services in the Departmentof Social Development, saidalcohol, substance abuse andillicit drug trafficking was aglobal phenomenon and it hadserious implications formillions of South Africansbecause it contributed tocrime, gangsterism, domesticviolence, family dysfunctionand other social problems.She said as a build-up to

this day, the department hadworked with the local commu-nities, churches, police andorganisations against drugabuse to mobilise youngpeople in their homes, tavernsand schools to raise awarenessof the scourge of substanceabuse.

ABOUT 900 educators within theMaluti-a-Phofung Municipalitywill receive certificates from theNorth-West University after theycompleted an end-user program.The graduation ceremony will

take place on Friday at the TshiyaResource Centre in Phutha-ditjhaba, Qwaqwa.Tate Makgoe, the Free State

MEC for Education, will be expect-ed to give his keynote address tothe teachers on the day.The course was offered by Ka-

gisoActive in partnershipwithKa-giso Trust and was aimed at bridg-ing the digital divide as well as em-power educators in ruralcommunities and transform themfrom doing things manually to do-ing things electronically, andlearners being the ultimate benefi-ciaries.According to DieketsengMokha-

IN celebration of Youth Month, the Maluti-A-Phofung Local Municipality’s Youth Develop-mentUnit togetherwith theOffice of theExec-utive Mayor held a memorial lecture at thePhuthaditjhaba Hall on Saturday.The 16 June lecture was held in remem-

brance of the past struggle for freedom andthe hardships that were experienced by theyouth of 1976.SarahMoleleki, the executive mayor of Ma-

luti-A-Phofung, urged the youth who hadgathered in the hall to vote so that their voicescould be heard in government.She also addressed issues such as educa-

tion, peer pressure and drug abuse.OupaKhoabane, the head of political educa-

tion and the premier’s spokesperson, was theguest speaker and gave a very informative lec-ture to the youth about the history of bantu

education, the Na-tionalist Party estab-lished in 1940 and theMorris Isaacson HighSchool march inSoweto which revolu-tionised the history ofSouth Africa.He later elaborated

on the importance ofthe military base inAngola which was setup by the South Afri-can youth to learnabout weaponry andhow best to defendthemselves againstthe apartheid systemof the time.“No matter how

long you’re out ofclass or out of actionyou will not bringabout revolution un-less you act,” he saidto motivate the youthto act on their strug-gles rather than beingoppressed by them.

THE Strokes of Genius projectaims to empower people throughthe visual arts, promote new mar-ket entrants and identify latenttalent, and help those lacking inexpertise and experience to bringtheir works to market.

Art has the potential to driveand develop a “new economy”.Checkers and Shoprite have rec-ognised this potential as it willcreate jobs and contribute to com-petitiveness that will ultimatelydrive the cultural industries.

The Shoprite Checkers StrokesofGeniusproject – aproject for thedevelopment of fine arts andcraftsfrom Africa and presented in part-nership with the Department ofArts and Culture, the Departmentof Trade and Industry and the De-partment ofBasicEducation –pro-vides artists and craft workers theopportunity to gain recognitionfor their talent by exposing theirwork to local and internationalbuyers through a visual onlinegallery.

As part of its commitment topromote the development of artand culture amongst young peo-ple, theShopriteCheckersStrokesof Genius project’s School ArtCompetition launched an art com-petition for secondary schools inMay 2009.

The Shoprite Checkers Strokesof Genius project, invites studentsin gr. 10 to gr. 12 to showcase theirartistic talents in the 2013 SchoolArt Competition by submitting

paintings (oil or acrylic) or sketch-es (charcoal or pencil) that por-tray the theme Picture a new to-morrow. Winners will receive acontribution towards furtheringtheir art studies, as well as a con-tribution towards the develop-ment of their school’s art pro-grammes.

Learners can enter the competi-tion (entries opened on 3 June) bycompleting the online entry formonline at www.strokesofgen-ius.co.za and submitting a photoof their artwork (at least 1 MB), aswell as a description of the art-work before the closing date onThursday, 8 August.

Based on the entries of photo-graphs received, a panel of judgeswill first select their choice of thetop 20 in each category. The organ-isers will then be in contact withthe these learners and/or theirteachers before to arrange collec-tion of these artworks fromschools for further judging.

From the top 20 the judges willthereafter choose 12 finalists percategory who will each receiveR2 000 for their art work. The pan-el of judges will select three win-ners in each of the two categories.

THE Boitshepo Olerato Projecthas donated 40 sanitary towels tothe gr. 12 learners of the Rekgot-sofetse Secondary School inFateng tse Ntsho near PaulRoux.

According to Puseletso Matso-ha, the founder of the project,they donated the sanitary towelsto the school because theywanted to give something back tothe school that made them whothey were.

Matsoha, who was once astudent at the same school, saidthey also wanted to help theneedy school girls since PaulRoux was one of the povertyalleviation areas.

She said 25 of the beneficiarieswhere orphans and vulnerablechildren.

“We then decided to give to the

others as well, since we felt thatwe could not sideline them,” shesaid.

The Olerato Project waslaunched last year in Novem-ber with the aim of helpingneedy girls with sanitarytowels.

Matsoha, the founder of theproject, said they were happy tovisit the school and added that itwas important to them toencourage the gr. 12 students towork hard.

“Our aim is to help the schoolsthat have big numbers oforphans and vulnerable chil-dren,” she said.

She said it was not the firsttime they donated sanitarytowels to schools and pointed outthat they had done it before atBluegumbosch High, ShaganeSecondary and Tshitso Intermedi-ate School.

“We hope to help more schoolsin future,” she said.

Yvonne Tladi, the principal ofthe school, said: “I want to thankthe project for what they havedone for the school. Whattouched my heart was the factthat some of the members,Matsoha and Mathe Motaung,were products of the sameschool.

“They still remember wherethey came from and one couldtell that there is a bright futureahead of them.”

Matsoha said they wouldlike to thank Mohapi Sekete ofthe Pro-Drive Academy forhelping them buy the sanitarytowels.

“I am calling other busi-ness people to come on boardand help us so that we areable to help our children,” shesaid.

IT is official. The Maluti FET CollegeFC are the 2012-’13 champions of theFreeStateSafaSecondDivisionLeaguewhich was formerly known as the Vo-dacom League.TheQwaqwa-based teamclaimed the

championship on Thursday afternoonwhen theyhammeredMovingSpurs by5-1 in a Qwaqwa derby that took placein the Charles Mopeli Stadium.Maluti finished top of the table with

62 points in 28 games with their strongchallengers from Kroonstad, Sham-rock Flowers FC, finishing behindthem with just two points after thesame number of games.However, the school boys know ex-

actly that it is not over yet for them asthey still have to compete in the play-offs for a place in the National First Di-vision (NFD).They will battle against the winners

of the eight provinces in the play-offswhich are expected to take place soon.

The date and venue for the play-offs arenot yet confirmed, but Johannesburg isthe favourite to be the host.The teams that will take part in the

promotional play-offs are MathathataBucks (Eastern Cape), Vardoso (Gau-teng), Sobantu Shooting Stars (KwaZu-lu-Natal), Baroka FC (Limpopo),Mbombela United (Mpumalanga),Polokwane City Rovers (North-West)and Cape Town All Stars (WesternCape).
