The Eau Claire community again welcomes the Eau Claire Express and their fans to another season at Carson Park stadium. As visitors to the park know, baseball is an essential part of sum-mer in west central Wisconsin – in fact, it just isn’t summer until the bright lights of the stadium flood the night sky and the radio announcer hollers “Play Ball!”

The city is very proud of its historic stadium. Home to Eau Claire baseball since 1937, Carson Park Stadium has hosted many exciting seasons of youth and amateurbaseball. As one of the last surviving examples of a Works’ Progress Ad-ministration era project, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The land that became Carson Park was donated 100 years ago this year, in 1914, to the City of Eau Claire, by an heir to William Carson, an early Eau Claire lum-berman. Although people had enjoyed this peninsula for recreation since the mid 1800’s, the 130-acre park (Eau Claire’s largest park) was now officially a public open space.

We take great care to maintain the park’s historic significance through con-stant restoration and improvements. The city’s attention to this important landmark means it will be enjoyed for years to come.

As you can see, Carson Park is an active place. Teams of all ages play baseball on one of the fields almost every day of summer. Several now-famous players have also “cracked the bat” at Carson Park - Hank Aaron, Bob Uecker, Joe Torre and Andy Pafko. Who knows--the makings of the next famous player may be in our midst this season!

The City of Eau Claire is proud to welcome you to the historic Carson Park Base-ball Stadium. Our staff is excited to begin the 77th season of baseball in this stadium. This year marks 100 years since the land that Carson Park rests on was donated to the city. This old stadium was built in 1937 with help from the Works Progress Ad-ministration at a cost of $60,000.

Each year over 100 ball games are played on this field by area high schools, Ameri-can Legion, the Cavaliers and the Express. Our ball diamond maintenance crews strive to make Carson the best place to play ball in the Northwoods League. This season for the Eau Claire Express promises to be even more exciting for Eau Claire families.

We invite you to tour the stadium and the Eau Claire Baseball Hall of Fame at the Hank Aaron Plaza. Hammerin’ Hank finally has some company in the plaza, with inductions of: Herman White; Dick “Ran” Bezanson; Tom Poquette; Victor “Vic” Johnson; Harvey Tomter; “Handy” Andy Pafko, Glen St. Arnault and Eau Claire Little League Founders Andy Green, Harold “Diz” Kronenberg, Howie Bullock and the 41 Eau Claire natives that made into the minor leagues by signing profes-sional baseball contracts.

Carson Park is surrounded by an ancient ox-bow lake formed by the mighty Chippewa River and offers many opportunities for recreation enjoyment including canoeing and fishing.

Alcohol Management: In compliance with Wisconsin State Law, the Express will not serve alcohol to anyone under the age of 21. Under state law, it is also illegal to purchase alcohol for anyone under the age of 21. The Express reserve the right to suspend alcohol service at any time to any or all individuals at the sole discretion of Express management and employees. Anyone who chooses to consume alcohol at Carson Park is subject to ID check and may be required to wear an age-related wristband. Any individuals that display unsportsmanlike behavior as a result of alcohol consumption may be subject to removal from the stadium confines without refund of ticket price.

Animals: Unless prior approval has been granted by the management and staff of the Eau Claire Express, animals are not allowed into the Carson Park Baseball Stadium. Those approved must be leashed at all times. The only exception is for service animals.

Autographs / Photographs: Eau Claire Express players and coaching staff will sign autographs and pose for pictures following each home game. Please respect their privacy before and during games, and refrain from making requests until after each game. Weather permitting, players and staff will sign autographs outside of their club house on the first base side of the stadium.

Credit Cards / Checks / ATM: The Express gladly accept MasterCard, Visa and Discover at the main ticket window, the concession window closest to the third base side of the stadium and at the team apparel store located by the Fan Deck entrance. Personal checks are not accepted. An ATM is located inside of the stadium, adjacent to the food concession area.

First Aid: Anyone in need of first aid care while attending an Express game should seek immediate attention at the Fan Information Booth, located at the east end of the stadium corridor (third base side.) Fans are encouraged to report all injuries to the nearest Express employee.

Gate Openings / Policy: Unless previously announced, stadium gates will open one hour prior to the scheduled game time. Fans are prohibited from bringing any carry-ins into the stadium. This includes, but is not limited to: food & beverages, coolers and lawn chairs. Fans are allowed to exit the stadium with a valid ticket stub.

Lost & Found: The Lost & Found area is located at the Fan Information Desk. Attempts to locate owners will be made over the Public Address system by Express personnel. For inquiries during non-game times, fans are asked to call the Express offices at 715-839-7788.

Parking: Parking at Carson Park is free and open to the public. However, please be aware that the Express cannot be responsible for any damage that may occur at any time. Our lots are located throughout Carson Park, as well as overflow parking located on Menomonie Street (across from Dairy Queen).

Rain Checks: If any Express game is cancelled before it’s ruled to be an official contest, your ticket may be exchanged for a ticket of equal value for any remaining regular-season home game. Once you enter the Fan Deck, there will be NO REFUND. However, all Fan Deck patrons will receive a general admission voucher for any remaining regular-season home game. Exchanges may be made at the Express offices, located at 108 East Grand Avenue in downtown Eau Claire, or at the Carson Park box office.

Smoking: Out of respect to all Express fans, smoking is prohibited in all seating areas of Carson Park Baseball Stadium as well as the Fan Deck. Due to city regulation, smoking must take place outside the stadium gates. Designated smoking aras are located outside the service entrance on the first base side behind the bleachers and outisde the entrance gate on the third base side. If you must leave the stadium area to smoke, please make sure you have your ticket stub for re-entry.

Souvenirs: Official Express souvenirs and merchandise are located in the Express souvenir stand, now located near the front gates on the first base side of the stadium. All items may be purchased before and during each home game. These same items are available for purchase at the Express office, located at 108 East Grand Avenue, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Friday. Fans can also order over the phone at 715-839-7788 or on the internet at www.eauclaireexpress.com

Tickets: The Express downtown ticket office, located at 102 East Grand Avenue (adjacent to the East end of the Chippewa River pedestrian foot bridge), is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 9:00 AM until two hours before game time on Saturday and Sunday of home games. On game dates, the Carson Park box office will open 60 minutes before the scheduled start time of each game. Tickets may be ordered and paid for in advance over the phone and can be picked up prior to the game at the stadium Will Call window. The matchup: Tonight’s game is sponosred by Subway and is the last of this six-game homestand for the Express, one that has been awfully kind to them. Eau Claire is 5-0, and after last night’s come-from-behind win, is one victory against the Border Cats shy of nothching a perfect homestand. Ben Allison takes the mound for Thunder Bay while Andy Davis takes the ball for Eau Claire. Although Allison was 6-0 at school this spring, he was roughed up in his first Northwoods League outing, giving up five earned runs in just 5.1 innings on the mound in a loss to Duluth. Davis, too, is looking for a bounce back start after one bad inning cost him against the Rochester Honkers last Friday night.

Last night’s game: Down 6-3 in the bottom of the eighth, the Express pulled together two runs in the bottom of the eighth and one in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game at six, sending it to extra innings. Even though he was wearing an 0-for-5 collar, Express shortstop Mike Barajas came up with a walk-off single in the bottom of the 11th to score Lane Milligan and win the ball game for Eau Claire. The 14 hits were a season-high for the red-hot Express.

And then there were none: To put even more good news on what has been an already ex-citing start to the season, no more Express players are playing in the NCAA tournament, as upsets of Oregon State and Cal Poly hint at an earlier arrival for some other players than in year’s past.

An RBI machine: Brian Sicher has an RBI in five straight games for Eau Claire.

Coaches Dale Varsho-Field Manager/Director of Operations

In 2013, Varsho became the Northwoods League all-time winningest manager by recording his 301st victory on July 25. He has been the only Field Manager in Express history, and he has helped two Major League Baseball players, Jor-dan Zimmermann and Kole Calhoun, get to the next level. He won the Northwoods League in 2010 en route to being named the league’s Man-ager of the Year. He lives in Altoona with his wife, Jennifer, and three kids, Jake, Averie and C.J.

Vic Cable - Pitching Coach

Like Varsho, Cable has been with the Express since their inaugural 2005 season, serving as the pitching coach. After an outstanding career on the mound for the Eau Claire Cavaliers, Cable has been an assistant coach at Eau Claire Memo-rial and Chippewa Falls High School. He is a high school teacher and lives in Eau Claire with his wife Pam and daughters Katie and Emma.

Matt MillerBen Kincaid

Former Ex-press standout on the mound and Memorial product Kin-caid is in his first season as the first-base coach for the team he once played for. An All-Star with the Express in 2011, Kincaid, who played his college ball at Min-nesota State, played with the St. Paul Saints in 2012.

Miller is in his second season as a base coach for the Express. He is in his first year as the third-base coach after spending 2013

in the first-base coaching box. The Eau Claire Memorial grad-uate also works at Momentum Fitness on the other side of town.

Front Office Bill ROWLETT-Owner

Rowlett has owned the ballclub since its inaugu-ral 2005 season, and the Eau Claire native has been around the baseball scene in town all his life. A four-year letter winner for the UW-Eau Claire Blugolds, Rowlett has also coached American Legion as well as local youth baseball and fastpitch teams. The father of two adult sons, Brett and Ron, Rowlett resides in neighboring Elk Mound with his wife Sue.

Andy Neborak-General Manager

After being the Stadium Ops intern for two sum-mers in 2007 and 2008, Neborak was full-time in 2009 before assuming his current role in 2010. The Express took home the Northwoods League title in his first season as GM. In 2013, Neborak won an Outstanding Young Professional award from the Eau Claire Chamber of Commerce for his contributions to the organization and city of Eau Claire.

Brittany StarkMichael Borden

Borden is with the club for a third straight season. It is his first as a full-time em-ployee. The 2013 UW-Eau Claire graduate is the Express Director of Tick-et Sales, and he also man-ages the Express intern staff. He also has oversight of all marketing and promotions.

A marketing intern a year ago, Stark joined the Ex-press front of-fice in Novem-ber. The 2013 Chippewa Val-ley Techinal College gradu-

ate has a new title of Corporate Accounts Manager. She primar-ily deals with sponsors and cor-porate outings as well as public relations.

Knutson is in his first season as the voice of the Express. K n u d s o n p r e v i o u s l y worked at the U n i v e r s i t y of Kansas, calling Jayhawk softball, track and field, soc-cer and baseball.

Tripper is with the E x p r e s s for a third straight sum-mer as the on-field an-nouncer. The 2006 UW-Eau Claire graduate also works with Midwest Family Broadcasting.

T h o m p s o n was a Sta-dium Opera-tions intern a summer ago and is now the Di-rector of Sta-dium Opera-tions. He oversees the hiring of part-time employees as well as monitoring the Fan Deck.

Erickson re-turns to same post as he was last sum-mer, the Me-dia Relations coordinator. The UW-Eau Claire jour-nalism student oversees the gameday program, team sta-tistics and write ups on the team’s website.

M a t t i s o n is the head strength and c o n d i t i o n -ing coach for the Express, training the team during the day be-fore a game. He brings more than 25 years of experience of coaching.

Nielsen joins the Express for his first season behind the mic at Carson Park. The Altoona resident is a long-time pas-tor in three different First Presbyterian Churches. He is a life-long baseball fanatic.

It seems like such a methodical practice, removing a cap and standing on the line to listen to the Stars Spangled Banner before every game.

But for Eau Claire Express players Brian Sicher and Tyler Jones, it means so much more.

The two Air Force teammates wait un-til the first words are sung before rotating to a 45 degree angle toward the centerfield flag, leave their hats on and salute the stars and stripes that they and their schoolmates have decided to dedicate their lives to pro-tect.

“It means a lot, you take a lot of pride in it,” Sicher said. “It’s special, every day we get to salute the flag and really get a mean-ing of what you’re doing and what you’ll be doing for this country some day.”

The United States Air Force Academy, located in Colorado Springs, Colo., is a school holding 4,000 of the country’s next great batch of leaders.

While the Falcons compete in the NCAA Division I, in the powerful Mountain West Conference nevertheless, there is a bigger picture than winning a national champion-ship or raising points on a batting average.

“Being able to put your country’s colors on and playing for the Air Force and to ul-timately be playing for the United States of

America,” Jones said. “In four years, we’ll be out in Afghanistan, and that’s what re-ally matters. Baseball’s fun, but at the end of the day, it’s what we do after school that really matters.”

For someone pursuing a dream in base-ball, Air Force might not seem like the first choice to go. It’s a rigorous structure to a day, as they wake up at 6 a.m. on the daily to clean rooms, put on uniforms to march to breakfast and have class from 7:30-11:30 a.m. The cadets then sometimes march to lunch, go to military class until 1:20 p.m., and the athletes practice from about 2-7 p.m. before tackling homework all night.

Both Sicher and Jones said they were looking for a place where they could play Division I baseball and have an opportunity to learn under a great education while hav-ing the opportunity to serve the country.

Air Force head coach Mike Kazlausky suited up and played for the Falcons in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s.

He has been to more than 60 countries in his active duty, been shot at and carry back dead bodies. He said while sports are great and going after a professional base-ball dream is great, the kids at the Air Force will learn through athletics the values that will lead to what happens after the diamond days are over.

“After they start the Academy, they’re going to graduate, they’re going to walk

across the stage and shake hand of the president of the United States...and at that point, their job is not to wear a baseball uni-form, it’s their job to where our nation’s uni-form,” Kazlausky said.

Sicher has been a staple for the Express for three seasons now. He has two walk-off at bats for the Express and a grand slam home run in his career. But he’s also in the top 15 in his wing of cadets at the Academy. Either a pilot career or finance will be in his line of work when he graduates.

Jones, a second-team All-American by Louisville Slugger in high school, batted .338 his freshman season in 54 starts. One day, he’d love to play professional baseball, but he also is looking at being a pilot and serving his country that way, as well.

Both Express players are looking to make things happen, just like everyone else on the team, for Field Manager Dale Var-sho.

But much like their stance on the line for the national anthem, their lives after baseball might be just a little bit different.

“The kids that are here have made the choice to provide that security blanket so we can sleep well at night, and that’s what Brian and TJ have opted to do,” Kazlausky said. ““It’s kind of cool to know that you have two men on the Eau Claire Express baseball team that are willing to die for each one of those kids on the line.”

1911 In a 26-3 win over the Braves at Palace of the Fans in Cincinnati, thirteen Reds players cross home plate. It is the highest number of different players from one team to score in a single game in major league history.

1968 In LA’s Ambassador Hotel, Robert Kennedy, giving his victory speech for his win in the California primary before being fatally shot, tells his followers in the packed ballroom, “I like to express my high regard to Don Drysdale, who pitched his straight sixth shutout tonight. And I hope we can have as good fortune in our campaign.” At nearby Chavez Ravine, the Dodgers right-hander had blanked the Bucs, 6-0, extending his scoreless streak to 54 innings.
