Media

In communication, media are the storage and transmission channels or tools used to store and deliver information or data.

Media is an interdisciplinary journal which welcomes contributions addressing media and society from the fifteenth century to the present. Its perspective is both historical and international. It will explore all forms of serial publication in manuscript, print and electronic media and will encourage work which crosses the boundaries of politics, culture and communications. The journal includes contributions covering a wide area of Media History, and welcomes contributions from across the globe. Contributors are encouraged to submit illustrations where appropriate.

Mass Media

Mass media is the major source of providing news and entertainment to the people who want to know who is doing what and what is happening.

Mass media denotes a section of the media specifically designed to reach a large audience. The term was coined in the 1920s with the advent of nationwide radio networks, mass-circulation newspapers and magazines. However, some forms of mass media such as books and manuscripts had already been in use for centuries.

Mass media includes Internet media (like blogs, message boards, podcasts, and video sharing) because individuals now have a means to exposure that is comparable in scale to that previously restricted to a select group of mass media producers. The communications audience has been viewed by some commentators as forming a mass society with special characteristics, notably atomization or lack of social connections, which render it especially susceptible to the influence of modern mass-media techniques such as advertising and propaganda.

MASS MEDIA IN PAKISTAN

(a) Print Media

(b) Electronic Media

(c) Interactive Media

Page 10: Express News Project

Electronic Media

Electronic media are media that use electronics or electromechanical energy for the end-user (audience) to access the content. This is in contrast to static media (mainly print media), which are most often created electronically, but don't require electronics to be accessed by the end-user in the printed form. The primary electronic media sources familiar to the general public are better known as video recordings, audio recordings, multimedia presentations, slide presentations, CD-ROM and online content. Most new media are in the form of digital media. However, electronic media may be in either analog or digital format.

Although the term is usually associated with content recorded on a storage medium, recordings are not required for live broadcasting and online networking.

Any equipment used in the electronic communication process (e.g. television, radio, telephone, desktop computer, game console, handheld device) may also be considered electronic media.

Print Media

Newspapers are social / commercial phenomenon because they talk about social issue of concern and have extensive commercialism attached.

Printing is a process for reproducing text and image, typically with ink on paper using a printing press. It is often carried out as a large-scale industrial process, and is an essential part of publishing and transaction printing.

Interactive Media

Normally refers to products and services on digital computer-based systems which respond to the user’s actions by presenting content such as text, graphics, animation, video, audio etc.

• Interactive media is a media that establish two-way communication.

• Interactive media is discussed along their cultural implications.

• The field of human–computer interaction deals with aspects of interactivity.

Why Govt considered that Freedom of Media is important In Pakistan

• In Kargil war India was able to sell its viewpoint to the world and cashed on its version while Pak suffered since it had only the state channel PTV.

• Govt policies played vital role and considered that “Media is more powerful then nuclear devices”

Page 11: Express News Project

History of Media

• There was a sudden and dramatic surge in the output of the press in 1640 Civil War in Kingdom of England. There was a great explosion in pamphlet and other printed materials, discussing a wide range of political, constitutional, and religious topics.

• Marconi an Italian inventor conducted the first successful transatlantic experiment in 1901 and at last on 17 December 1902, a transmission from the Marconi station in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada, became the first radio message to cross the Atlantic from North America.

• John Logie Baird's demonstration of televised moving images in 1926.
