Exposure Visit of officers, staffs and members of Chhattisgarh State Minor
Forest Produce Co-operative Federation Ltd, Chhattisgarh to the State of
Karnataka
Background:
Chhattisgarh has about 44% geographical area under forest cover, which is very rich in
biodiversity due to favorable agro-climatic conditions. There are about 10,400 medicinal
plant/forest produce collection centers. However, the skill of stake-holders needs to be refined in
the areas of good collection practices and value addition. Training/exposure will help
stakeholders understand the ecosystem and enable them to harvest in a scientific manner. In this
regard, Chhattisgarh State Minor Forest Products, Co-operative Federation of Chhattisgarh asked
TDU to organise an orientation for stakeholders in good collection practices, harvesting and
primary processing of medicinal plants.
The program was held from 11th
- 15th
, September 2017 at TDU, Bangalore, wherein 21 members
and staffs from co-operative federation attended the program.
Day 1 – 11.09.2017
Dr. M. Abdul Kareem, Associate Professor and Dr.
Subrahmanya Kumar, Assistant Professor gave an
introduction to the programme and briefed participants as to
what they will learn in five days training programme. Dr.
Kareem then gave an overview of the activities of FRLHT-
TDU.
Session on Sustainable Harvest Practices :
Ms. Deepa G.B, Asst. Professor at TDU, explained advantages
of sustainable collection practices. It was highlighted that
livelihood of present and future generation, availability of
quality raw materials to industry/users, overcoming problems of over-harvesting, illegal and
unscientific collection can be ensured through sustainable harvest practices.
Session on ‘Good harvesting and primary processing of medicinal plants’.
In this session, Dr. Veerayya Swami Charantimat, Sri
Paripoorna Sanathana Ayurveda Medical College,
Hospital and Research Centre, Nelamanagala, Bangalore
spoke about various Ayurvedic guidelines mandated in
classical literature for collection of medicinal plants. He
also explained about the right kind of soil and agro-
climatic requirements for good growth of medicinal plants.
He also informed about the possible health hazards during plant collection and methods to
prevent it.
Visit to various centers of FRLHT-TDU
Ms. Anu V. and Ms. Amrita G. took participants to a guided tour of the campus. At the center for
Repository of Medicinal plant Resources,
Dr. NoorunnisaBegum, Asst. Professor at TDU, gave a
brief introduction about the center which was
established in 1993 with a focus on medicinal plants
used in Indian Systems of Medicine (ISM). The
objective of the programme was to highlight the
morphological variations of the plants and to represent
plant species across different ecosystems by engaging
botanical surveys to collect plant specimens across
different biogeographic zones, ecosystems and habitats of the country. These botanical surveys
have resulted in additions to the existing collection of medicinal plants used in ISM as well as
the plants traded in the country. She also taught participants the importance of identification of
crude drugs with two, five crude drugs samples. She explained their substitute and adulterants
with taxonomic and organoleptic characters.
Participants were then taken to raw drug preparation
center by Dr. Udaykumar. He explained participants
about collection, processing and purification of herbal
drugs. Medicinal plants are collected and preserved at
specified temperature and then purified from toxic and
unwanted materials. Raw material will undergo various
processes and the final product is tested for its quality.
It is then sent for packaging.
Participants visited the Centre for Pharmacognosy and
Pharmaceutics, which is a unique R&D unit of
FRLHT, with its research activities being guided by
the Traditional Knowledge. Dr. Subramanya Kumar
explained the key purpose of this Centre; this center
undertakes cross-cultural bridging research to
demonstrate the contemporary relevance of Traditional
Pharmacognosy (DravyagunaShastra, the study of raw drugs) and Pharmaceutics
(BaishajyaKalpana, the study of the products) of Indian Systems of Medicine and Modern
Science. He also informed that the Centre has been
accredited as a certifying body by the Department of
AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani,
Siddha and Homoeopathy), Government of India and
has also been certified as an ISO 9001:2000 unit. The
Centre focuses on four main areas: Research, Testing,
Consultancy and Training. The Centre is a full-fledged
Laboratory with all the necessary facilities to conduct phytochemical analyses, microbial tests
and develop molecular markers on medicinal plants and products. Custom-based product
development is taken up to support data on quality standards, consistency and stability of
products. The Centre offers different need based trainings to small-scale industries, researchers,
students, NGO’s and entrepreneurs on many subjects in the sector. Thus, the Centre is a one-stop
shop for all the requirements of the ISM sector.
At school of informatics, Ms. Tabussum gave introduction
to the database of medicinal plants. She also explained the
advantages of database and how it is used digitally.
Participants also visited Manuscript digitation center. Mr.
Ananth explained participants about how manuscripts are
preserved and are converted into digital format. He also
showed few Ayurvedic works which have been transformed
from Manuscripts to printed books along with translation of
the texts from Sanskrit to English.
The evening session saw Mr. Mudit Kumar Singh, IFS.; PCCF, Chhattisgarh & MD,
Chhattisgarh State Minor Forest Products, Co-operative Federation giving an inspiring speech.
He explained overall motto and ambition in the planned program.

Chirapunji of South India as this place is next to Chirapunji in receiving a very high rainfall. It is
situated at 2,710 feet above sea level. It is a wet evergreen which harbors many rare plants,
reptiles and animals. King Cobra, lion-taletmacque, turtule, sambar etc. are some of the fauna
found in this region. Karnataka forest Department in collaboration with FRLHT, Bangalore has
established Medicinal Plant Conservation Area (MPCA) since 1995, to conserve the medicinal
plants and protect the endangered species. Ecotourism activities have been taken up to attract the
tourist at the MPCA site.
During 2006 local community has been involved in sustainable management of
NTFPs/medicinal plants. Sustainable Harvesting Methods for the species like Garcinia
gummingutta, Cinnamomum sulphuratum, Vateria indica and Myristica dactyloides has been
developed.
Participants visited the MPCA and learnt about the concept of in- situ conservation of medicinal
plants and identified the population of medicinal plants conserved at the site. They also visited
the sustainable harvest site and discussed with the communities on the sustainable harvesting
methods practiced by them.
Day 4 – 14.09.2017
Visit to Saptagiri Herbals

Day 5 – 15.09.2017
Session on RET Species of Chhattisgarh
Ms. Anu, Senior Research Fellow, TDU explained about the
medicinal plants of the state and the threat associated with
it. The expanding domestic and global demand of many of
these commercially valuable plants growing inside the
forests as well as outside forests, have depleted to such an
extent that their very survival has become a matter of
concern. Hence there should be a rapid threat assessment
process to assign threat status based on IUCN Red List
Categories and Criteria to the species for further conservation action. The list of the species that
were assessed during the CAMP exercise was shown to the participants for the better
understanding.
