UCSF LEARNING ABOUT RESIDENCY CSHP at UCSF has had the pleasure of hosting various events to help inform members about residency programs and the steps toward pursuing a residency. We would like to share a few of the events we have hosted recently. RESIDENCY 101 At our Residency 101 event, Dr. Amanda Morris, UCSF Residency Program Director, presented to P1s and P2s about what residency entails, why it is a career path worth considering, and characteristics that residency programs often look for in their candidates. In attendance was a total of approximately 80 students, double that of last year! At this event, Dr. Morris also brought along a few UCSF PGY1 residents to offer a personal insight on their experiences during the residency application process and life as a resident. MEMBER'S THOUGHTS ON RESIDENCY PANEL EXPOSURE TO RESIDENCY RESIDENCY PANEL "I learned about the important of doing your research to learn about the residencies you want to apply to and helpful tips on how to organize a schedule to meet residency deadlines. The residency panel helped ease my worries about applying for residencies and gave me moreconfidence now that I have a better grasp of the process and expectations of applying." — Ashley Guanzon, Class of 2021 Each year, CSHP at Pacific holds a residency panel and invites P3s who have successfully matched with a residency. This year, we invited seven P3’s to share their experiences with students via Webex. The panelists gave valuable advice that ranged from starting early by working on CVs, letters of intent, researching specific focuses of different residencies, to interview etiquette. Students had the opportunity to hear about tips about going through the PHORCAS process. Applying for residency is very extensive process and can be very stressful for applicants. This event allowed students to gain personal insight on how to become successful applicants in the future. July 2020

MEMBER’S THOUGHTS ON

RESIDENCY 101 “Residency 101 provided an insightful look

into what I should expect when preparing

for and applying to residency programs. It

was great to have our own residency

director and current residents there to

discuss the process and share their

RESIDENCY ROUNDTABLE Our annual residency roundtable is one of the most anticipated events at UCSF

each year. We invite residency directors from California’s most prominent

residency programs. Pharmacy students have the opportunity to meet and talk to

residency directors and current residents as they gain a unique insight what each

residency program has to offer. This past year, we proudly hosted 12 residency

programs from the Bay Area, greater Sacramento area, and Southern California:

- Kaiser Permanente East Bay

- Kaiser Permanente San Francisco

- Long Beach Memorial Medical Center

- Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital

- Safeway/UCSF Community Pharmacy

- Santa Clara Valley Medical Center

- Stanford Health Care

- Sutter Health East Bay

- UC Davis Medical Center

- UCSF Medical Center

- VA Northern California Sacramento

- VA Medical Center San Francisco

Our goal of the roundtable is to allow students to explore post-graduate

opportunities and to provide them with a first-hand insight into how residency

programs are preparing residents to become well-rounded, effective clinical

pharmacists. Most importantly, this roundtable helps prepare pharmacy students

to tailor their professional pharmacy career to their own personal interests in the

future.

The residency showcase is one of the largest events at CSHP-Pacific. We contact residency programs from all across Northern California and invite directors and residents to give our members an overview of their program. This year, we hosted18 residency programs that met with students via Google Meet:

Our goal is to give students an opportunity to network and learn from residency representatives to prepare them for their future as pharmacists. This event allows students to learn more about their interests as they work towards their pharmacy career.

INSTALLATION BANQUETWith a new academic year comes a new set of driven pharmacy students, along withtheir ideas for growth and improvement of CSHP-Pacific. Amidst a room of newly-initiatedleaders, the members of 2020 executive board formally gained their new roles during the 2020 Installation banquet. The event started with representatives from eight different pharmaceutical companies who provided information and educated everyone about their products. Members of the San Joaquin Pharmacist's Association, pharmacists, and students from the Central Valley and Pacific Chapter also attended. The evening included a fun raffle that was held to help raise funds for student programs.

Despite the challenges which limit in-person interaction due to COVID-19, the board is working dilligently to provide students with access to resources, as well as to continually advocate health-system pharmacy.
