  • Expository Essay Writing

  • What is an Expository essay?Expository essays require that the writer give information, explain the topic or define something.

Since they are factual, they are written without emotion (no personal opinion= no I think statements).

It contains an introduction, body paragraphs (e.g. 3 paragraphs) and a conclusion paragraph

  • Introduction

The introductory paragraph of any paper, long or short, should start with a sentence that grabs the interest of your readers.

    Write a grabber!!!

  • Write a strong introduction

    Surprising fact:

The pentagon in the US has twice as many bathrooms as are necessary. The famous government building was constructed when segregation laws required that separate bathrooms be installed for black people.

    Humour:

When my younger brother switched fresh eggs for our hard-boiled eggs during my sisters wedding as a prank , he did not realize our father had taken those eggs and gave them to one of his friends.

    Quotation:

There cannot be true democracy unless women's voices are heard. Therefore, many countries in this world should allow women to voice out their opinions about many things.

  • Thesis statementIt is a reasoned argument; a statement of a point of view, opinion, or conviction written as the last sentence in the first paragraph.

It must be a statement that can be supported with evidence

It must be one sentence in length.

It has TWO parts. The correct thesis statement contains both what you are going to prove and how you are going to prove it.

  • Examples:

Violence in sports (what) takes away the fun of the game and it is the main cause of injuries (how).

There are numerous ways to reduce road accidents (what) such as imposing stricter rules, reducing speed limit and educating the public about safety (how).

  • Writing ParagraphsWrite a 5-paragraph essay : An introduction, 3 body paragraphs, and a conclusion

Each paragraph should contain a topic sentence that states the main point of the paragraph taken from the thesis statement.

The last paragraph should end with at least a closing sentence that summarizes what you have written or makes a connection to the next paragraph this is called a transition sentence.

  • The topic sentence

States the main idea of a paragraph.

It is the first sentence of each new paragraph.

It tells your reader exactly what you are going to discuss in the next sentences. Support your topic sentence with the main idea and examples.

  • Example: Next, road accidents can be reduced by reducing speed limit (Topic sentence). This measure needs to be taken to solve the problem of countless accidents over the years (main idea). Currently, the speed limit at most highways is 110 km/h except Karak highway with only a maximum speed of 90 km/h. Reducing the limit to only 100 km/h and 80 km/h may result in a positive outcome (example).

  • Transition words to start a new paragraphAnother reason/ factor/ advantage etc. On the wholeFirst, second, finally, next Besides Other than that Apart from that The fifth paragraph will be your conclusion.

  • The conclusion Your conclusion is the final paragraph in your essay. It wraps up all of your ideas-a summary.

NO NEW ideas are to be added into your conclusion.

The final paragraph will summarize your main points and re-assert your main claim. It should point out your main points, but should not repeat specific examples.

Read your essay to see if it flows well.
