About the Export ProfileThe aim of the Export Profile is to show the extent of inter-national work and projects. The Profile is based on data from member companies from the Danish Association of Architec-tural Firms, the Danish Association of Consulting Engineers (FRI) and the Danish Construction Association, as there is no representative data available from Statistics Denmark.
The Danish Architects, Consulting Engineers and Contractors have extensive international experience and have a strong pres-ence in many foreign markets, Europe being the most important. In 2013 the main tendencies were:
2 International turnover decreased from 21.7 billion DKK in 2012 to 18.1 billion DKK in 2013. This was mainly due to setbacks for the Danish Contractors.
2 More than 70 percent of international turnover is generated in subsidiaries in 2013
2 Norway is the largest international market for the sector and comprises more than 20 percent of the total international turnover

In 2013, Danish architects, consulting engineers and contractors saw a 16.5 percent decline in international turnover compared to 2012. The main reason for the overall decline is to be found in a horrible year for Danish Contractors, where the companies have adapted a more risk adverse strategy focusing more on the home market. The bankruptcy of a large contractor in 2013 and lengthy procedures by public entities to approve new projects have also played a major role in the disappointing figures. Danish architects and consulting engineers have fared better in 2013. The figures for the Danish architects are somewhat misleading. The Danish archi-tects are as busy as ever on international projects, but the turno-ver this year is based on reports from fewer companies compared to previous ones. This combined with an increase in payment time on projects has resulted in a lower turnover. Danish consult-ing engineers continue their growth on the international market and increased their turnover by 4 percent from 2012 to 2013.
Direct Exports and Subsidiaries
For the sector as a whole, the share of turnover generated by local subsidiaries exceeds the export based turnover that is generated from home offices in Denmark. More than 70 percent of the inter-national turnover is now generated by local subsidiaries, which shows that even in this highly globalized world, it is still impor-tant to be close to your costumers. In our experience, exports can therefore no longer be viewed in the traditional way of selling a product from country A to country B, but must be seen as interna-tional activities in a globalised environment, where the compa-nies gather the team to match the specific project, and the choice of team members is based on qualifications and costs, and not on the parent companies country of origin. However, the growth effect of this global approach is directly beneficial for Denmark: Our analyses show that every Danish job created in international projects generates 1½ jobs in related sectors in Denmark.
It is therefore vital that the framework conditions in Denmark are supportive for companies that compete internationally. Essential needs are access to finance and to a highly qualified workforce as well as facilitation of cross-border mobility.
While Danish activities have spread all over the world, the primary focus is still on the neighboring markets in Scandinavia and North-ern Europe.
Norway – the largest international market
Danish architects, contractors and consulting engineers generate a total turnover of 4.2 billion DKK here, which is 23.1 percent of the total international turnover.
The Norwegian market is very attractive due to its stability and the high volume of ongoing and planned projects combined with few cultural barriers for Danish operators. Danish architects, contrac-tors and consulting engineers have therefore established a strong presence on the Norwegian market with many subsidiaries, which generate the majority (82.6 percent) of the turnover.
For the Danish architects, the two primary sectors are construction and “other” whereas civil engineering projects comprise only a minor part of their turnover. When looking at Danish contractors and consulting engineers, the largest sector is “other” followed by civil engineering. This is mainly due to the turnover generated in the energy sector. While the Norwegian market is very attractive, it does suffer from a shortage of specialized labor and high staff costs. This can however be an advantage for Danish subsidiaries in Norway because they are able to draw on resources from the parent company and their other subsidiaries.
