HOUSEKEEPING
MAP testing this week.
Unit 1 is now open. • New lesson will open each day
• Pacing guide coming soon

GOAL FOR TODAY…….
Goal: Know what it means for a
number to be raised to a power and how to represent the repeated multiplication symbol
Know the reason for some bases to require parentheses
Agenda: What is
exponential notation?
How do you determine the sign of the result?
![Page 4: Exponential Notation Slides](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062822/5883de371a28ab62358b5d37/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
There’s an easier way!
3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 =
5 x 3 =
Multiplication is an easier way of adding the same number with itself multiple times!

What if you’re multiplying the same number with itself multiple times?
3 • 3 • 3 • 3 • 3 =

Notice the use of parentheses in #2,3, and 4
Do you know why?
![Page 14: Exponential Notation Slides](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022062822/5883de371a28ab62358b5d37/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
When should you use parentheses?
In cases where the base is either fractional or negative.

WRAP UPIt’s over already : (
Why should we bother with exponential notation? Why not just write out the multiplication?
Exponential notation is used for recording scientific notation of very large or very small quantities. It is indispensable for the clear magnitude of a number.
