NEZAVISNI DNEVNIK

The Budva-based Adriatic Fair saw the grand opening of the 19th Business Fair on 26th October. Budva Bazaar of Women’s Creativity was organised within this trade fair event, in co-operation with NGO Budva Women’s Organisation.Tamara Marković, Project Manager of the event, addressed the trade fair visitors on behalf of Adriatic Fair and expressed her gratitude to the representatives of Budva Municipality for their attendance and the Budva Women’s Organisation for co-operation on organisation of this event. She added that this year’s Fair focuses on women’s entrepreneurship and creativity, striving to foster affi rmation of women’s entrepreneurship and creativity, as one of the potential cornerstones of economic development of Montenegro. Irena Medigović, President of the Women’s Organisation, delivered a welcome address on behalf of the Budva Women’s Organisation. She stated that she has been working for 27 years in the Budva

Women’s Organisation, focusing on promotion of the women of Budva, both in their municipality and beyond the Montenegrin borders. Hence, opportunities for tasting the traditional fl avours of gastronomic delicacies prepared by these women were provided in Ohrid, Sarajevo, Vrnjačka Banja, Banja Luka, Makarska and Brač.Medigović expressed her gratitude for co-operation both to Adriatic Fair and the Secretariat for Local Government of Budva Municipality, which provides support for their projects on an annualised level through a tender for non-governmental organisations.During the grand opening of the 19th Business Fair and Budva Bazaar of

Women’s Creativity, Milijana Vukotić Jelušić from the Secretariat for Local Government of Budva Municipality noted that the women of Budva are synonymous with diligent, committed and patient work on women’s emancipation, promotion of women’s creativity, encouragement of creativity, as well as on providing assistance and support to vulnerable social groups in our community.“I believe that this type of women’s activism is signifi cant for Montenegro, since, although the share of women in Montenegrin population exceeds that of men, women are unfortunately most frequently faced with unemployment”, added Vukotić Jelušić.

PRESENTATION WITHIN THE WORKSHOP‐TRADE FAIR INFRASTRUCTURE: THE CHALLENGES OF MANAGEMENT

“The today’s workshop is organised to mark the 50th anniversary of Adriatic Fair, as well as the jubilee of the Civil Engineering Fair. The topic addressed primarily arose from the dilemmas about whether to opt for eff ective management of trade fairs as trade fair complexes or for some other options of exhibition event management”, noted the Professor Zarić, Ph.D, whilst announcing his presentation.“It is a well-known fact that trade fairs normally have high fi xed costs and also that they imply large plots of land. They are most frequently located in the outskirts, yet some have remained in the city centre due to subsequent development. I was interested in what was stated about this topic in the international literature. In addition, I was striving to provide answers on how to most eff ectively exploit the exhibition premises.Another problem in trade fair event management is their seasonal activity. The peak season is in spring and autumn, whilst winter is not the best season and summer is considered as the worst season from the aspect of exhibition events. The issues such as whether the trade fair season can be extended, like the tourist season, which is also faced with seasonal oscillations, as well as how to manage cash fl ow throughout the diff erent periods and how to exploit the capacities for some other activities, such as concerts and sports activities, amongst others, are of particular interest and need to be considered.International trade fairs have only recently started exploring all these opportunities”, noted Zarić. In addition, he pointed out the importance of the issue of sustainability of exhibition events: “The third domain whose importance I would currently like to emphasise is to further explore the sustainability of these organisations, as well as

the importance of the need to resort to renewable energy sources and sustainable management. In fact, concepts such as Green Venice and green complexes, are increasingly frequently being mentioned. It is obvious that we will all need to pay attention to such issues, since, due to being attractive institutions within architectural structures, trade fairs also pollute and emit greenhouse gases into the atmosphere with their large-scale cooling and air-conditioning systems for which they require substantial energy. There is also the issue of waste management, to name a few”.Moreover, he pointed out several potential solutions: “The building of solar farms on fertile soil is currently rather frequently banned and they are normally built on the rooftops of industrial facilities and distribution centres. Hence, perhaps we need to consider building them on the rooftops of trade fair halls. Trade fair management certainly needs to refl ect on this issue. Furthermore, certifi cates of membership in international organisations, which have thus far been used to denote quality, are certainly required, in addition to green certifi cates, since those who are not holders of green certifi cates may be eliminated from the global market. Is this positive or negative?I believe that we are witnessing a new

form of protectionism within free economy and globalisation. Moreover, I believe you will be eliminated because of some standards that those more developed comply with and you do not. Nevertheless, if you prepare on time, you will be able to tackle such diffi culties with greater ease. There is currently a wide range of forms of co-operation between trade fairs, local communities, as well as at the state level and public-private partnerships, to name a few. One is normally granted the management of some facility solely based on their experience from this aspect. Nevertheless, you can organise events in non-traditional facilities. In addition, you can opt to appear in a trade fair jointly with international colleagues in the exhibition industry and address a specifi c topic biennially or triennially, since the available room is currently rather limited”.Finally, the moral of this story would read: venture boldly into new solutions!“This is simultaneously the topic addressed in the forthcoming UFI congress, which will be held at the end of October in Saint Petersburg and it will be entitled “The Challenges of Management”.I would like this concept to be used as a shift from the fi eld of marketing towards the fi eld of management”, stressed the Professor Zarić, Ph.D, eventually.

TO THE FAIR WITH SUCCESS NO. 143• The end of the year is approaching and we are involved in the preparation of the new calendar of trade fairs and events in which we are planning to participate. What are the basic recommendations? • I would recommend you to rethink the traditional approach that insists on annual participation in specifi c trade fairs. You need to carefully analyse the recent developments on the international market, primarily concerning the sales growth and the products and services provided by you. Moreover, it is important to study the indicators across the branches of economics, as well as the results of the surveys conducted amongst business people. You may decide to give priority to potential identifi cation of appealing trade fairs this time during the decision-making. You may only subsequently consider your product range and decide on the quantity of products to be exhibited, if any.

• Based on our previous experiences, we believe we need to participate in a larger number of trade fairs. Is it preferable to provide a specifi c plan for every trade fair participation or do we need to develop a standard approach? • The most eff ective solution would be to combine the two approaches. Nevertheless, if you need to opt for one of them, I believe you need to standardise the features of trade fair participation. The display area of your exhibition stand will certainly vary depending on the requirements of the specifi c market, the requirements for a larger room for communication or, occasionally, on the extent of availability of exhibition stand space. It is important to highlight that paying attention to costs is imperative. You may decide to design a pilot project of your exhibition stand within your business premises, which you will equip with

lightweight and portable items, whilst striving to avoid substantial costs concerning exhibition stand equipment.
