8 MJSA EXPO • 2019 SHOW GUIDE
1 to 2:30 p.m.You’ve Lost That Handcrafted Feeling: Heart and Soul in a CAD World
Presenter: Scott Bradford, Rio Grande
As technological changes occur at an increasing rate, jewelry
designers face a familiar challenge: how to use modern technolo-
gy to meet production deadlines while remaining true to their
creative vision and spirit. This presentation will discuss how to
balance both and ensure that every piece of jewelry keeps its
“heart and soul.”
10:30 to NoonPanel Discussion:What’s New in Responsible Sourcing?Moderator: Andrea Hill, Hill Management Group. Panelists:
Mark Hanna, Richline Group; Susan Wheeler, Chicago
Responsible Jewelry Conference; Stewart Grice, Hoover &
Strong Inc.; Brandee Dallow, Responsible Jewellery Council;
and Patricia Syvrud, University of Delaware Minerals,
Materials & Society program.
This panel of industry experts—all of whom have a differ-
ent vantage on the creation of supply chains—will explore the
latest developments in the sourcing of diamonds, precious met-
als, and colored gemstones. Consumers are becoming more
and more interested in jewelry made from responsibly sourced
materials; this discussion can help to ensure you’re prepared. 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.The Importance of Freehand Jewelry DesignPresenter: Rémy Rotenier, Rémy Design
Freehand design still creates a solid connection between jew-
elry designers and their creations. And drawing a jewelry design
live in front of clients can lead to an enhanced sense of collabo-
ration and deeper level of trust (some clients even frame their
drawings). The good news is that anyone can develop and refi ne
their drawing skills—and in this hands-on session, you can de-
velop yours. You’ll learn to draw a round brilliant faceted stone,
followed by a designer ring in perspective. See how freehand
drawing can refi ne your creativity, heighten your sense of scale,
and create new connections with clients. Note: There is a $50
fee for this session.

and explore best practices in CAD, CAM, and casting, includ-
