Company I’m representing:

I’m founder of Ecotec Technologia Ecologiaca LDTA

Location: Sãu Paulo State, Brazil

Services my company provides:

Portable sanitation for construction, special events and agriculture

Source of pride in my business:

I’m most proud of the work we do in con-

servation of water resources. We are preserving the vital resource for future generations.

History with the Expo:

This is my 10th Expo. I missed once since 2003.

Why I attend the Expo:

If I don’t come and my competition comes, they will be a step ahead of me. This is a chess game, and you have to be five steps ahead of the competition. Education Day is fundamental, and I always see new things on the show floor. I get to interact with the big players in the industry and get to be known as a professional in Brazil.

Something people wouldn’t know about me:

Though I’m the company founder and I no longer have time for it, what I most like is working side by side with the operations guys, driving trucks and cleaning restrooms. Every day you’re in a different place, working with a different customer and working on a different challenge.

Trenchless point repair is an economical, high-quality solution to infrastructural sewer and pipe repair, reducing the time it takes to plug holes, stop leaks and create a brand new pipe-within-a-pipe.

That will be the focus of one of Wednesday morning’s seminars, con-ducted by Ron Dick of Infrastructure Repair Systems. According to Dick, the technology focuses on repairing holes, cracks and leaks in sewers and mainlines, without having to excavate or even reline the whole pipe.

“This technology repairs the specific problem areas of a pipe,” says Dick. “What you’re left with when it’s done is basically a new pipe at a fraction of the cost and effort.”

First the pipe is cleaned of all foreign material with a high-velocity jetter. Next a CCTV inspection camera is used to accurately determine and document the location of the damaged pipe, along with location of laterals and other pipe conditions. A two-part epoxy is then mixed and saturated into a mat made of felt and fiberglass. The mat is wrapped onto a rubber bladder that is inserted in the sewer line to the exact

location of the defect. The bladder, which is flow-through to allow continuous use of the sewer, is inflated to the proper pressure to mate the repair to the host pipe. After the appropriate curing time (IRS epoxy cures in 2 1/2 hours), the bladder is deflated and removed from the sewer. The camera is then used to inspect the new structurally sound and watertight repair.

“It’s really a great tool for municipalities to take advantage of,” says Dick. “There’s no digging, and installing it means very little, if any, disruption of service.”

While there are several trenchless point repair products on the market that Dick will touch on in his presentation, the particular product he markets cures ambiently, meaning the product can be installed on wet pipes, and will even cure under water.

“Obviously replac-ing pipe and sewer is great, but it’s also very expensive,” says Dick. “This product is a very viable alternative, and is certified to last 100 years. It will out-live the pipe!”

Dick points out that one municipality in particular — Newport, N.C. — recently saw a large benefit utilizing trenchless point repair.

“Newport was seeing all sorts of I&I issues, basically treating thousands of gallons of water daily that didn’t need treatment,” he says. “It wasn’t efficient and was a continuously increasing cost to their taxpayers. They needed to do something, and came to us.”

Using CCTV pipe inspection, Infrastructure Repair Systems technicians identified 20 problem areas in need of patching. The work was done quickly, service was not disrupted, and the I&I issues were reduced significantly.

“Newport was a prime example of a municipality that wouldn’t have been able to afford to dig up their streets to make pipe repairs,” says Dick. “The large majority of the pipe was in good shape. It was typi-cally joints where the leaks were happening. It would have been a shame to have to replace the entire pipe, and to spend all the money to do it.”

While Infrastructure Repair Systems didn’t invent trenchless pipe repair, they have taken the technology to a new level. The company has developed a system to snake its rubber bladders through 90-degree pipe bends in smaller-diameter mainlines, and continues to perfect the chemistry of its epoxy. It offers cold- and warm-weather blends that each cure in 2 1/2 hours and are similar in strength and durability.

“We’ve been focused on the development and perfection of the product and the technology because we believe in it,” says Dick. “We’ve seen so many municipalities that saved time and money by prolonging major repairs. That’s why I want to talk about this. It can really be a great help.” n

Indianapolis (population 876,804) was founded and plat-ted in 1821 in what has become known as the “Crossroads of America.’’ Its unique and varied tourist attractions are just part of what makes Indy, well, Indy.

According to Visit Indy conventions and meetings communica-tions manager Lisa Wallace, “Visitor favorites include the green space, canal and attractions conveniently located in White River State Park, steps away from hotels. Two new attractions include the Dallara IndyCar Factory and our Cultural Trail, an innovative project connecting visitors on bike or foot with hotels, restaurants and eclectic neighborhoods throughout the city. The Indianapolis Museum of Art is also popular with prominent works of art inside and 152 acres of gardens and grounds outside that house the original (Robert Indiana) LOVE sculpture.”

Those are just some of the attractions located in the city’s six distinct cultural districts. These include Broad Ripple Village, the Canal and White River State Park, Fountain Square, Indiana Avenue, Mass Ave and the Wholesale District. Nestled in these districts are public art, galleries, museums, shops and recreation. Four of the six districts are conveniently located downtown, the site of the Pumper & Cleaner Environmental Expo. See it all Broad Ripple Village is set against the backdrop of public art, graffiti murals and green spaces. It’s the ideal venue for those adventuresome souls who enjoy art, creative spaces and ethnic foods. Shopping options include works by local artisans, as well as vintage furniture and collectibles. The Indianapolis Art Center and the ARTSPARK outdoor laboratory are located in Broad Ripple.

The Canal and White River State Park are more for history and out-door lovers. Limestone walkways and American Indian art are part of the experience in this district.

Scattered throughout the Canal and 250-acre White River State Park are some of the city’s most inspiring museums and attractions.

The Canal Walk — on the “waterfront” — provides an urban respite for fitness enthusi-asts and seren-ity seekers. This district is also home to the Indianapolis Zoo, the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art, the Glick Indiana History Center, the Indiana State Museum and the NCAA Hall of Champions.

Fountain Square is a historic community spotlighted by a town square and central fountain, evoking images of a European city. It is a literary and artistic haven and home to more offbeat activi-ties like duckpin bowling and swing dancing. More than 75 artists call the Wheeler Arts Community or Murphy Art Center home.

Indiana Avenue anchors the district that spans the Central Canal and White River. Here history, jazz, restored neighborhoods and spirituality embrace the city’s rich African-American heritage. Several venues are on the National Register of Historic Places.

Mass Ave is the city’s arts and theater district, including five performing arts theaters. Shops feature local artists’ works, and an array of original outdoor art greets visitors.

Wholesale District brings an urban excitement to the city with marquees, tuxedoed doormen and a mall to delight shoppers — the two-block, four-story Circle Centre mall. This is the heart of the business district, home to historic buildings, massive sky-scrapers and the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and Indiana Repertory Theatre.

The Bankers Life Fieldhouse is home to the NBA’s Indiana Pacers and WNBA’s Indiana Fever. Lucas Oil Stadium hosts the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts.

2013 Pumper & Cleaner Environmental Expo InternationalPg. 12

You make the annual pilgrimage to the Pumper & Cleaner Environmental Expo for a variety of reasons … surely to see the latest equipment the industry has to offer and to learn the latest technologies through Education Day seminars.

Effective networking with your industry colleagues is an-other key to making the most of your visit to the 2013 Pumper & Cleaner Expo in Indianapolis. Taking part in the Breakfast Roundtable discussions — set for 8 to 10 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28 — is the best way to accomplish that goal.

Just ask Mike Stephens, of SCS Stephens LLC in Haslett, Mich., who participated in a Roundtable discussion about main-tenance contracts for wastewater treatment systems at the 2012 Expo. He’ll tell you he came away with practical advice from fellow service providers who work across the country.

“I was able to exchange maintenance agreements with other contractors from the Roundtable discussion. We showed each other what we use for contracts and that was really beneficial,’’ Stephens says. “If somebody else is doing something that’s work-ing, why do we have to reinvent the wheel? If someone’s already drafted a really good service contract and good marketing — or a clever idea in another state — why not use it?’’

Stephens and other contractors at his table explored some of the ideas they’ve used to promote maintenance contracts among their customers. Then they exchanged business cards and delved deeper into the topic in the weeks following the Expo. Eventu-ally they were faxing their agreements to each other for critique, looking for ways to improve the documents.

“Different people have different perspectives,” he says. “I enjoyed being able to talk to companies that were maintaining twice as many systems as I do and those doing a smaller num-ber. It was a really good experience.”

Maintenance contracts were one of many timely business topics explored at the 2012 Roundtable discussions. And many more are in the works for 2013. After grabbing a buffet break-

fast, participants will choose a topic and start networking. You are invited to move from table to table to discuss a host of topics ranging from providing services to social media marketing. Hot topics Dave Gustafson, a University of Minnesota Extension Service engineer and regular speaker at Pumper & Cleaner Expo semi-nars, led a 2012 Roundtable that veered into a fascinating hot topic: hydrogen sulfide deterioration in concrete tanks.

The discussion wasn’t what Gustafson expected, but it brought to light valuable information about an issue that helped inform his table participants from California, Ohio, New Jersey, New York and Virginia.

“Part of the value of the Roundtable discussions is trying to deal with topics that contractors are working on right now. What are the issues we’re wrestling with today?” he says. “I was able to talk to contractors about what they were seeing and interpret it from the research standpoint.”

Pinpointing important trends in service and maintenance helps participating contractors keep pace with an evolving industry, Gustafson says. As technologies to treat and transport wastewater change and improve, a well-informed contractor will provide better customer service and become a more effective steward of the environment, he says. And Gustafson says the networking efforts he begins at the Expo Roundtables continue throughout the year, adding tremendous value to his work and, he hopes, to the advancement of the contractors he’s befriended.

Gustafson and other industry educators take part in the Roundtables as moderators, keeping the discussions on topic and adding their expertise wherever possible. As a moderator, Gustafson has a message for all Expo attendees considering taking part in the Roundtables in 2013: The more the merrier.

“Sometimes guys are worried they’re not going to have any-thing to say. But everyone has a perspective. They’ve all been involved in the industry, so all of them have something to share.”

2013 Pumper & Cleaner Environmental Expo InternationalPg. 14

For the first time at the Pumper & Cleaner Environmental Expo, exhibitors will be giving live equipment demonstrations outside the Indiana Convention Center.

Product demos will take place today outside Exhibit Hall I on Senate Avenue at the south end of the Convention Center. Five companies will spend one hour each showcasing their equipment, followed by Q-and-A sessions with company representatives.

Hammelmann Corp. pumps feature three, five or seven plung-ers and offer a small footprint, direct coupling, low maintenance costs and high operational efficiency. Hammelmann will demon-strate the dynamic plunger seal system, which eliminates the use of high-pressure packing. The design enables safe and reliable continuous-duty operation at pressures up to 58,000 psi. The complete line of high-pressure accessories includes 3-D tank cleaners, rotary devices and reaction-driven assemblies. Follow-ing the demo, visit Hammelmann in Expo booth 3109.

Terydon, Inc., manufacturer of specialty waterjetting and waterblasting accessories, will demonstrate a precision ultra-high pressure (UHP) abrasive cut using the Jack Track Cutting System, which has earned Terydon the reputation as a leader in the cold-cutting world. Visit Terydon in Expo booth 3108 for more information on the cutting system.

Perma-Liner Industries, Inc., will showcase the Top Gun Con-tinuous Inversion System, which allows the cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) liner tube to invert utilizing low air pressure. The liner inverts continuously without the need for above-ground water column towers, tall scaffold or excess water. Following the demo, visit Perma-Liner in Expo booth 3223 for more information on the inversion system.

GapVax, Inc., will demonstrate the MC Advanced Series combination sewer cleaning unit, which allows the operator to observe and troubleshoot the entire system. Display screens control hydraulics, blower and water pump operations. All body functions, boom and hose reel functions, vacuum break, throttle, and area and safety lighting are wirelessly controlled, while still maintaining proportional boom and hose reel control. Check out GapVax in Expo booth 6004.

NozzTeq, Inc., will demonstrate the BL SWIPER Nozzle, which helps prevent blown toilets. The company will also do an above-ground demo of the Paikert Impact Cutter for situations where digging isn’t necessary. Following the demo, visit NozzTeq in Expo booth 1250 for more information on its products.

Stop by today to see all these products in action.

Indianapolis is more than just the storied Hoosiers of film fame and the fabled Brickyard of the Indianapolis 500 race, especially when it comes to honoring U.S. veterans.

Washington, D.C., may be considered the cornerstone of veterans’ memorials, but Indianapolis easily ranks second. The Indiana War Memorial Plaza Historic District located downtown contains two museums, three parks and 24 acres of monuments, statues, sculptures and fountains, ranking it second nationally in acreage and number of monuments dedicated to veterans. It is also home to the national and state headquarters of the Ameri-can Legion.

According to Brig. Gen. J. Stewart Goodwin (USAF retired), “There’s no other place like this in the country. Indianapolis has more acreage in the nation devoted to veterans.” Almost 200,000 visit the memorials each year.

As executive director of the Indiana World War Memorial, Goodwin, a 37-year Air Force veteran, adds, “Indiana has provided, based on population, more service members (in all conflicts) than any other state. I’ve never seen another place where they treat veterans and honor them this well. The folks here are very down to earth … and they’re very patriotic.”

The memorials, conveniently located within walking dis-tance of the Indiana Convention Center, home of the Pumper & Cleaner Environmental Expo, include the Soldiers and Sailors Monument, the tallest memorial to Civil War veterans in the U.S.

The Indiana World War Memorial sits 210 feet above street level; this mausoleum-style limestone and marble memorial pays homage to Hoosiers killed during World Wars I and II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. A military museum in the basement allows visitors to follow the history of Indiana soldiers from the Battle of Tippecanoe through the most recent conflicts.

FOR THOSE WHO SERVEDIndianapolis proudly honors the men and women of our Armed Forces with a robust collection of war memorials By Sharon Verbeten

The limestone Soldiers and Sailors Monument on Monument Circle designed by Bruno Schmitz is 284 feet high and the iconic heart of downtown. The Col. Eli Lilly Civil War Museum is in the lower level. Visitors can climb the 330 steps to the top or ride an elevator to get an eagle-eye view of the city from the observation deck. The monument is only 15 feet shorter than the Statue of Liberty.continued on Pg. 20

“Once we get them in the building, we’ve got them. The structure and architecture is amazing,” says Goodwin.

The mall itself also includes memorials for World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars, as well as Veteran’s Memorial Plaza. The USS Indianapolis Memorial recognizes those who

died on the last U.S. ship to sink in World War II. Of the approximately 1,200 sailors on board, only 317 survived.

Goodwin notes that one of every 10 people has served in the military. “We try to educate the 90 percent about what the 10 percent did,” he says.

The Indiana World War Memorial is comprised of Neoclassical architecture. The Shrine Room inside is stunning with red marble and materials from around the world to symbolize the global nature of World War I, 24 stained-glass windows and a 30-foot-tall American flag hanging over the Altar of Consecration. The museum in the lower level illustrates the state’s participation in wars throughout history.

The COLE Publishing editorial staff is in the building and looking forward to meeting you. Throughout the run of the Pumper & Cleaner Environmental Expo International, we will be at your disposal to answer questions, learn about your busi-ness, and discuss story ideas.

Ted Rulseh, editor of Treatment Plant Operator (TPO) and Water System Operator (WSO); Jim Kneiszel, editor of Pumper, Portable Restroom Operator (PRO) and Onsite Installer; Luke Laggis, editor of Cleaner, Municipal Sewer & Water (MSW) and Gas, Oil & Mining Contractor (GOMC); and Briana Jones, COLE’s digital editor, will be in the class-rooms, on the floor and stationed at the COLE Publishing editors’ booth next to registration outside the main exhibit hall doors. Please stop by and share your opinions and concerns on the issues your industry is facing.

It’s easy to connect with us. You can flag us down on the Expo floor or visit the editors’ booth. In addition, you can reach any of us by cellphone at the numbers provided below.

As an added bonus, if you stop by the editors’ booth, we’ll enter you in a daily drawing for two free passes and a two-night hotel stay for next year’s Expo. You can also get a photo and press release with your own company information to send to your local publications. It’s a quick, free and easy way to let your customers know you’re doing what it takes to stay on top of the latest industry trends and technology.

We look forward to meeting you. Enjoy the show.

There’s a lot to see and do at the Pumper & Cleaner Envi-ronmental Expo but it’s not always easy to get it all in. To make it easier on attendees, COLE videographer Paul Thompson and I explore the show, compiling video footage for the Expo website. The videos are all in one spot, so you can check out all the happenings (and make sure you don’t miss anything) at www.pumpershow.com.

We start with a video introducing this year’s show and venue, and then get right into Education Day. We interview the seminar leaders and the folks who take the classes. So be ready; we might be waiting outside your seminar to get your opinion on the class you attended.

Videos also include interviews with exhibitors on the floor. Exhibitor staff members explain new products they are intro-ducing at the Expo, along with how the products work and how they benefit the customer. These products include drain cleaning solutions, inspection cameras, vacuum trucks, septic tanks and a whole lot more. Keep an eye on the website; we might feature an item you can’t miss.

We also feature other events at the Expo, including the Roundtable Discussion and Breakfast, which takes place from 8 to 10 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28. We interview visitors about what they learned at the breakfast discussion and how it will impact the way they run their businesses, so you can learn from them even if you weren’t able to attend.

If you see us walking around the show floor, stop us and tell us about your Expo experience.

2013 Pumper & Cleaner Environmental Expo InternationalPg. 28

At 9 a.m. Tuesday, the doors flew open at the Indiana Con-vention Center and thousands of eager attendees flooded in, marking the opening of exhibits at the 33rd Pumper & Cleaner Environmental Expo International.

Nothing quite matches the excitement and anticipation of the first morning of the Expo. Exhibitors spent the previous few days detailing new equipment — much of it making its official debut at the Expo. Sales reps were at the ready to answer questions and network with regular customers. They were offering give-aways including canvas bags, candy and Mardi Gras beads to passersby.

Attendees were greeted by the best vacuum and heavy-duty combination trucks, carefully polished portable sanitation trail-ers, trailer jetters, onsite system supplies and every accessory imaginable to serve wastewater contractors. The world’s biggest show for environmental service providers didn’t disappoint.

“I like to see all the different and new products for the market and meet new people,” said Dave McGregor, of Northern Disposal and Sanitation, Katrine, Ont., Canada. While

he didn’t have anything specific on his shopping list, McGregor said he was checking out inspection cameras to be able to expand his service menu.

“You might find something you need for your business, the possibility is always there,” said Kris Noble, of John Noble Septic Service, Creemore, Ont., Canada. “I’m always in the market for a truck. I can see all the different designs and options at the show and go home and figure out how I want to build it.”

McGregor and Noble met at the Expo several years ago, and the Canadian portable sanitation contractors have been friends and Expo companions ever since.

Pat Flynn and Jeff Grubbs, of Superior-Speedie Portable Toilets in Akron, Ohio, said they were in the mar-ket for a few new vacuum trucks for their expanding business. They also took time Monday to update needed certifications during Education Day. But the biggest reason they were hitting the show floor on opening day was to network with other industry professionals.

“The benefit is the networking capabilities to work together with other operators,” said Flynn, whose company owns and subleas-es upscale restroom trailers to other restroom operators.

“Honestly, to get all these people together from the industry in one place, once a year, this is it,” said Grubbs. “It all comes back to the networking.”

arrived in bright-red company sweatshirts, ready to shop the show hall. It’s the fifth Expo for owner Robby Tarpley and the first for son Tristan, daughter Tianna and wife Tia, who remarked, “We’re excited to be here!”

AAA serves a territory south of Knoxville with five employees and three vacuum trucks, specializing in septic system mainte-nance and grease trap pumping. Robb’s here for some window shopping and serious tire-kicking: “I love seeing all the new products and gadgets. Anything that’s good.”

While visitors were combing through hundreds of exhibitors’ booths in the hall, Expo education opportunities continued in breakout rooms. Seminars focused on many topics, including transportation and land application, industry safety, sewer collection and rehabilitation and a slate of Spanish language offerings. A variety of general business classes covered subjects including cloud computing and low-cost marketing.

After the first day of the Expo closed down, attendees made their way to the J.W. Marriott Hotel Grand Ballroom for the ever-popular Industry Appreciation Party. After a long day of wearing out the shoe leather, partiers got to kick back with a few 25-cent tap beers and a concert featuring country star Craig Morgan. It was a great way to relax and recover in anticipation of Day 2 of Expo exhibits. n
