Exploring and Making Use of Space
Since the space race spurred the United States and the Soviet Union to develop better ways of
getting into and exploring space, the world has benefited from an increasing knowledge of Earth,
our solar system, and the universe. Satellites have also helped us to communicate and navigate
around the world.

The Computer Revolution
Since the proliferation of the personal computer in the 1970s, people’s lives have been
transformed. Some computer programs and robots replaced human jobs, some programs made
existing jobs much easier, and some saved lives by helping to predict disasters. The Internet
began as a joint effort between the U.S. government and universities. It has made information-
sharing much easier and led to an explosion of electronic commerce.

Advances in Medicine and Biotechnology
Biotechnology and genetic engineering have brought such benefits as longer life expectancies
and increased food production that helps to feed the world. There are also advances that worry
some people, such as genetically modified foods and cloning.
