FAMILY EVENTS

At the Y, we believe it is important to give back to and support other individuals and organizations in our community. The Y serves as a catalyst for positive change—bringing people together and giving them opportunities to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others, as well as in their own.

Join our Y family in doing good through organized volunteer activities. As space is limited, please register one week in advance.

To learn more about any of these opportunities, contact Monica Flores at 630.547.2005 or [email protected].

KINDNESS WEEKWe will celebrate Kindness Week, February 3-9, and invite you to join us in activities to spread kindness throughout the community. Please sign up for these activities at the Membership Services Desk.

KINDNESS HEARTSThroughout the week, we will collect kindness hearts— heart-shaped notes with words of kindness—to fill mason jars with "love" that will be delivered to local senior living centers on Valentine's Day. Pick up a stack of hearts from the Membership Services Desk.

February 3

COOKIES FOR FIRST RESPONDERSGather your friends, coworkers, family or neighbors to bake treats for first responders. With your group, deliver the sweets and say "thank you" in person.

February 4

PHIL'S FRIENDS CARE PACKAGES Spend your afternoon creating hope-filled care packages with comforting items cancer patients can enjoy, as well as hand-colored cards and positive notes. A $5 donation or in-kind donations are accepted.

Families are welcome; however, participants must be at least five years of age; youth age 15 or younger must be accompanied by an adult. This volunteer opportunity will be held at 1350 Lake Street, Suite 1 in Roselle.

February 8 12:30-2 p.m.

NATIONAL VOLUNTEER MONTHApril is National Volunteer Month—a month dedicated to honoring all of the volunteers in our communities, as well as encouraging volunteerism throughout the month. National Volunteer Week is a great time to get involved and give back. Below are a few ways you can take an active role at the Y and in your community.

• Help with Y fundraising efforts to ensure those in need can access essential programs and services to reach their full potential.

• Get involved as a preschool reader to help youth learn new words, and build confidence and a love for reading.

• Assist with teaching a class or ask Y staff about other ways to get involved with a program of interest.

• Join our Knitting Club. Projects are donated to DuPage PADS, Ronald McDonald House, Phil’s Friends, Red Heart Association and more!

April 6-13

SPRING CLEANING DAYYou spring clean. We provide a place to drop off items. The Y gets a donation. It's a win-win! We'll take items—from pots and lamps to clothing, sports equipment and more—in our lobby. A complete list of accepted items will be available at the Membership Services Desk in March.

Items will be donated to Savers, and in turn the Y will receive a donation for each pound collected. All donated funds will help provide financial assistance for families in need, or for those experiencing hardship, to access the Y's important programs.

Savers' Rethink Reuse business model of buying, reselling and recycling gives communities a smart way to shop and keeps more than 700 million pounds of used goods from landfills each year.

DIABETES PREVENTION PROGRAMOur community-based Diabetes Prevention Program is designed to enable adults to make lifestyle changes that will improve their overall health and reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

This program is based on the landmark Diabetes Prevention Program funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which showed that by eating healthier, increasing physical activity and losing a small amount of weight, a person with pre-diabetes can prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes by 58 percent—and by 71 percent among adults aged 60 years or older.

UNSINKABLE Ages 3-12 For children in the foster care system

Every child should be given the chance to learn how to swim; however, social or economic factors sometimes prevent access for children in foster care. That’s why the B.R. Ryall YMCA partnered with Brigid Coleman and Eric Robben, a local foster family, to create UNSINKABLE—a swim program designed to ensure access so foster kids can thrive by learning water safety and gaining confidence.

HOW UNSINKABLE WORKS The Coleman-Robben family invested in UNSINKABLE to subsidize swim lessons for local foster kids. Thanks to their support, participants pay a discounted rate of just $25 for a five-week lesson session.

To register, select your desired lesson time, then visit the Membership Services Desk with a copy of your 906 Placement Authorization Form.

OUR PROGRAMS TEACH MORE THAN JUST SPORTS SKILLS.

When kids play sports, they get more than exercise. Besides being physically healthier, they have higher self-esteem and a healthier body image. Kids who play sports perform better in school, develop better interpersonal skills and work better in groups.

With the values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility at the core of our instruction, youth get a lot more than just proper technique from our programs. They gain life skills that will help them succeed on and off the field of play.

SCHOOL-AGE CHILD CARE

At Bright Beginnings Preschool, we believe the values and skills learned early on are vital building blocks for future success. That’s why our preschool is staffed with people who understand the cognitive, physical and social development of young kids; the need kids have to feel connected and supported in trying new things; and the caring and reinforcement families need. Most importantly, children learn how to be their best selves. That makes for confident kids today, and contributing and engaged adults tomorrow.

The foundation of our curriculum is the building of relationships and secure bonds. Each classroom's schedule allows for an equal amount of activity and rest, as well as for indoor and outdoor activities. Our teachers take into account every child's developmental history, family home values, beliefs, experiences, religion and language, and adapt their teaching methods accordingly.

HOURS: Monday - Friday 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. We ask that children arrive no later than 9 a.m.Lunch and two light snacks are served daily.

CLASSROOMS: Caterpillars (Age 2), Butterflies (Ages 3-4)and Rockets (Ages 4-5)
