Ten Familiar Tree Genera

Tree: a woody plant that has many secondary branches supported clear of the ground on a single main stem or trunk with clear apical dominance.

The Tree of Life, in Bahrain grows with no abundant water source and is over 400 years old!

Oak (Quercus)

Fruit are known as acorns

Hard wood used commonly to make high quality furniture

About 600 species

Maple (Acer)

Achene fruits fall like helicopters

Acer saccharum is the sugar maple, known for its maple syrup

About 130 species

Cherry (Prunus)

Many but not all fruits are edible to humans

Blossom early in spring and garner much attention

430 Species including cherries, peaches, almonds and plums

Willow (Salix)

Known for large pendular (weeping) shapes

Salix caprea is the name for goat willow, also known as pussy willow

Birch (Betula)

Bark easily peels off of most species of Birch, especially Betula papyrifera (Paper Birch)

Bark was used by Native Americans to make canoes and other items

Pine (Pinus)

Leaves are commonly referred to as needles and persist year-round on healthy trees

Can vary in size from very large species to very small and slow growing species

Spruce (Picea)

Grow in some of the harshest cold climates

Fruit are referred to as cones and grow downward on branches

Fir (Abies)

Commonly used for Christmas trees especially in NW America

Cones grow upward on branches, different from Spruces

Larch (Larix)

Bear cones for fruit but shed leaves (needles) in winter like broadleaf trees

American Larch (Larix laricina) is also known as the Hackamatack

Juniper (Juniperus)

Fruit used to flavor gin and other products

Typically slow growing

Leaves usually referred to as scales
