Editors Note – Rotaract: A Fight worth
Fighting
Humanity is the quality of being humane and
benevolence. It is about developing the ability to
understand the feelings of others while standing
up for each other in times of need. Rotaract
District 3220 is one national platform that
explores this humanity through networks of
likeminded young individuals.
Rotaract in Sri Lanka has brought people of
different religions, cultures, ethnicities and
nationalities together to celebrate the meaning
of diversity. It has taught the youth how to
respect each other irrespective of the countless
dissimilarity. This is one important lesson we as
Rotaractors learn by being part of such a diverse
movement even though it goes unnoticed.
In a generation where technology and
materialism has overpowered humanity, the
determination portrayed by Rotaractors in
transforming the negatives in society is indeed
admirable. We have already fought so many
fights, but a lot more remains. We should not
give up on our dream of making the world a
better place as all of us together can definitely
make a change!
This bulletin provides a glimpse at the efforts
Rotaractors have put in during the first quarter
of the year 2012/2013. I would like to thank
DRR Rtr. PP. Dilhan Jayatilleke and the District
Committee for assisting me in numerous ways. I
also appreciate the support given by all the clubs
in the District.
Please enjoy reading Explore Rotaract @ 3220!

t is my
sincere
Rotaract
privilege to
pen down
these few
words for
the very
First Official
District Bulletin of Rotaract District
3220. I thought of moving away from
the conventional way of issuing a
Monthly Bulletin to a Quarterly Bulletin
simply because we will have more to
read. When we see a Bulletin every
month, as a reader I know for a fact that
Rotaractors may not find the interest to
go through it since they are already
aware of what has happened during the
month completed. When it comes to a
quarterly issue, we may have already
forgotten what has happened two
months back. Therefore, this will be a
better option in keeping people
informed on the record.
It is commendable to see the response
given to the District by all the clubs
when it comes to sending articles to be
published. It is great that Rotaractors
have realized the fact that we need more
Marketing towards our movement. This
Bulletin is just a little step towards that
huge feat. After this, you will get three
more issues covering the three
remaining quarters. Make sure that you
read all the Bulletins since as much as
you like other Rotaractors to read about
your work, understand that they also
prefer the community to know about
their good work. We are here to make
the world a better place to live in.
Therefore, please spend some time
reading this.
To do the job, I found the best in
business: Rtr. Thilini Alahakoon as
District Editor. I have worked with two
Editors in my life at the helm of the
movement. Let me say that she is far
ahead than the District Interact Editor I
had when I was the District Interact
Representative – 2003 / 2004.
Especially, the amount of work as
Rotaract District Editor is more than
what is required in Interact level. HATS
OFF to Rtr. Thilini for her patient,
methodical and creative work. At the
same time, the District Director for
Public Relations Rtr. Ransimali
Warnapura needs to be commended
here as well. She is someone who is
very silent, but; makes sure that work is
done on time. Two of them together, I
am sure that I will be able to achieve my
expectations in terms of Public
Relations for the District during this
year.
My message to all you Rotaractors is to
keep up the good work and at the same
time, let the entire District be aware of
what you do. That will give you more
satisfaction when you hear good
comments about the work that you have
done. As a Rotaractor, I thoroughly
enjoyed reading the First Issue of
“Explore Rotaract @ 3220”. I am sure
that it will be the same for you as well.

orn to the family of Mr. and
Mrs. M. P. Subramaniam, on
10th January 1983, he was a
vibrant and outstanding character from
the days of his childhood. Being an
Interactor of the Interact Club of St.
Sylvester’s College, Kandy from 2001-
2003, he perused a life of serving the
community at a young age. This
humanitarian journey did not end from
Interact, as he joined the Rotaract Club
of Wellawatte in 2006. His vision as a
Rotaractor was special yet superior as
he urged to “set the bar high in terms of
quality, scope and an impact of all
Rotaract work and to help all the
Rotaract Clubs to further their horizons
while creating a platform of progress”.
This vision enabled Rtr. Subramaniam
Sudakaran to make his mark as one of
the most exceptional Rotaractors of the
Rotaract history.
His actions were powerful than his
words as he was recognized locally and
internationally for his immense effort
and devotion for Rotaract. One of his
most noteworthy achievements is the
accomplishment of being Mr. Rotasia in
Rotasia 2010 (Rotasia is the South Asian
Regional Rotaract Conference held
annually) in Aurangabad, India. He was
also the first
Sri Lankan
Rotaractor
to be
crowned by
this title.
In the
capacity of
being the
President of
the Rotaract
Club of
Wellawatte
in 2008/2009, he brought recognition
to his club be receiving the Rotaract
District Citation 2009/2010, Rotary
International Citation 2008/2009, the
award for the Most Supportive Club of
the District and the Presidential
Appreciation Award from most clubs in
Rotaract. He was also the District Club
Service Director for 2009/2010 and the
Assistant District Rotaract
Representative for 2010/2011.
However, above all these triumphs his
greatest achievement was being an
exceptional leader in the capacity of
District Rotaract Representative (DRR)
for Rotaract District 3220 in 2011 /
2012.

As the DRR for Rotaract District 3220,
Rtr. Subramaniam Sudakaran succeeded
in instilling discipline within the
movement. This action is expected to
bring order and structure to Rotaract to
ensure its transparency and continuity
in the future. With the theme of “Live
Your Passion Live Rotaract”, he made
several accomplishments to improve the
strength of Rotaract as a youth
movement in Sri Lanka. As a result, he
focused on consolidation rather than
expansion where the quality and
innovativeness of projects were
improved under his leadership to
disburse benefits to the entire
community.
Rotaractors have always praised Rtr.
Subramaniam Sudakaran for not letting
his professional obligations overshadow
his personal life. He always prioritized
and balanced every minor detail and
enjoys his life to the fullest. Rtr.
Subramaniam Sudakaran is currently
employed in Dialog Axiata PLC and is an
all-rounder who has excelled in sports
and aesthetics apart from being an
excellent presenter and spokesperson.
He was a member of the Hockey team
and boxing team of St. Sylvester’s
College, and was a talented Hip-Hop
dancer during Interact. He still keeps his
sportsmanship alive by being part of the
Dialog Hockey Team. He has a strong
interest in swimming, travelling and is a
nature lover.
Rtr. Subramaniam Sudakaran has been
the voice behind the success of Rotaract
during the past year and the pride of
Rotaract Sri Lanka who brought much
recognition to Rotaract District 3220
under his guidance. He is an exceptional
young leader, leading Rotaractors
through local and international events
and achievements becoming one of the
most acknowledged Rotaractors in the
global arena. He is also commended to
be a great mentor to newcomers always
willing to lend a helping hand to
members. His innovativeness, passion
and drive to make a difference in the Sri
Lankan community have made him a
role model to the Sri Lankan youth.
His enduring contribution in leading Sri
Lanka’s largest youth movement is
much respected by Rotarians,
Rotaractors and Interactors alike. His
belief in serving the community with
passion will undoubtedly be
remembered and appreciated by
Rotaractors in years to come.

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA)
As many of you must be aware, RYLA is
coming up this year during the last
weekend of October. Hosted by the
Rotary club of Uptown, this will be one
of the most exciting events on most of
the Rotaractors’ calendars. This year’s
RYLA will be held at the MAS Training
Centre in Thulhiriya. Participants will be
given an opportunity to take part in a
forum to discuss leadership skills and
learn them by practice.
Among many who participated in RYLA
is Rtr. IPP. Hazeem Osman of Rotaract
Club of Colombo Fort, who is also the
Zone I Representative and Club Services
Director for the Rotaract District 3220.
He has been an Interactor for 5 years
and a Rotaractor for 2 years of his life,
and has participated in RYLA organized
in 2009.
Rtr. Hazeem says that the experience
and contacts from Interact pulled him to
becoming a Rotaractor; in his own word,
“That's the beauty of it, adding more
value to the youth network we build
upon and reading the definitions of
professional development and humanity
from two different ends.” In his
experience, RYLA brings together the
Rotary community together in a way
like no other. The fun activities and the
professional development achieved
through this event can never be
replaced nor gained anywhere else.
Rtr. Hazeem says his most memorable
experience with regard to RYLA was
“Skitting”, where participants got the
opportunity to put a timely topic to
drama. This and many other segments
of the 3-Day RYLA programme will
surely be one of the most brilliant
experiences any Rotaractor will receive.
So do not miss this opportunity to
participate in this year’s RYLA to be
held from the 26th to 29th of October!

District Rotaract Representative (DRR) – Rtr. PP. Dilhan Jayatilleke
Dilhan is the mastermind behind the scenes of Rotaract and the most wanted Rotaractor
for this year. He is someone who has a clear vision and the greatest perseverance an
individual can ever have. He joined Rotaract in year 2004 and is currently a member of
the Rotaract Club of Fort. Having completed his doctorate and being involved in the
family business of exporting rubber, he has become extremely successful at a very
young age.
If you are
to
recomme
nd
Rotaract
to a
friend,
what will
you tell
them?
I believe
that networking is vital for the youth to
survive and progress in life. Therefore,
the main benefit I think that Rotaract
would provide a prospective member is
the opportunity to network.
What was the most memorable
moment in Rotaract for you?
The most memorable moment for me
was when I was installed as the DRR for
Rotaract year 2012/2013 on the 30th
June 2012.
What is the most difficult thing about
being a Rotaractor? In my capacity, I
think it’s dealing with problems
concerning different Rotaractors and
Rotarians. I have experienced instances
where people try to pull others down
and criticize them even though Rotaract
is principally about helping each other.
However, this is part of the system and I
have learnt to deal with it.
According to you, what can we as a
District do to strengthen and improve
the movement?
The main component that Rotaract as a
movement is lacking is proper public
relations. I believe that promoting our
efforts will take the movement to an
improved position through better
exposure and attraction of funds.
Name one thing about yourself that
most people do not know. I enjoy doing
adventurous and risky things!
What quality of people do you hate the
most and why? I hate people who do
injustice and people who betray others.
What is success for you?
Success for me is making the maximum
number of people cry the day I die,
because that is an implication of how
well I have lived and how deeply I will
be missed when I am gone.

District Rotaract Representative Elect (DRRE) – Rtr. PP. Abdul Wahid
Abdul is one of the most popular Rotaractors in the movement (essentially judging by
the applause he gets whenever he speaks at any Rotaract event!) He is also a calm and
focused individual who is capable of taking the Rotaract movement in Sri Lanka to
great heights. His Rotaract history started in 2009 with the charter of the Rotaract Club
of University of Colombo, Arts Faculty and he is currently a member of the Rotaract
Club of Cinnamon Gardens.
If you are to
recommend
Rotaract to
a friend,
what will
you tell
them?
I would tell
them to
come and
experience
Rotaract simply because you only get
the big picture with experience.
What was the most memorable
moment in Rotaract for you?
The most memorable moment for me in
Rotaract would be my trip to Kandy,
Anuradhapura and Jaffna last year.
Travelling to Jaffna for the first time and
that too alone was simply amazing.
Organizing the first World Down
Syndrome Day Celebrations was also
memorable, while the Rotasia trip was
another. Tell you the truth Rotaract has
been full of memorable moments!
What is the most difficult thing about
being a Rotaractor?
The most difficult thing about being a
Rotaractor would be attendance.
Sometimes it’s a bit hard to make it to
all.
According to you, what can we as a
District do to strengthen and improve
the movement?
As District officials, I think we should
facilitate and direct Rotaract in Sri
Lanka for better unison and explore
causes that need attention to develop
our community and country.
Name one thing about yourself that
most people do not know.
One thing that most people do not know
about me is that I love to cook...
What quality of people do you hate the
most and why?
I hate hypocrites. I think you need to be
true to yourself first to live a happy life.
Why? Simply because of trust!
What is the best compliment you have
ever received? I think the best
compliments would be anything in the
lines of “congratulations” from my
parents knowing how hard it is to come
by!
What is success for you? Success for me
is doing what I enjoy and completing it.

District Secretary – Rtr. Nadisha Colombage
If I were to introduce Nadisha, I would say she is someone who is always on the run
attending to things that no one can keep up with! Nevertheless, she is one of few
Rotaractors who has achieved a lot within a short time span. She is also one of the most
considerate, supportive and strong-willed individuals. Nadisha is currently employed at
Brandix Lanka Limited, an undergraduate of University of Colombo – Faculty of
Management and Finance and a member of the Rotaract Club of Cinnamon Gardens.
If you are to
recommend
Rotaract to a
friend, what will
you tell them?
Rotaract is the
BEST platform to
develop an
individual’s
leadership skills
and for
networking.
What was the most memorable
moment in Rotaract for you?
The instances we overcame different
obstacles during the World Down
Syndrome Day Celebrations in 2011 and
2012 are all memorable moments for
me because I knew that all those
moments would account for something
great in the end!
What is the most difficult thing about
being a Rotaractor?
Balancing time between Rotaract and
other commitments...
According to you, what can we as a
District do to strengthen and improve
the movement?
I think we need to continue to monitor
the performance of clubs to ensure they
are going in the right direction while
advising them on areas of improvement
to get the best out of them.
Name one thing about yourself that
most people do not know.
Actually, most people don’t know much
about me anyway!
What quality of people do you hate the
most and why?
I am not fond of people who have
different personalities. Such people
cannot be trusted because you will
never know when they will change and
to whom they will change.
What is the best compliment you have
ever received?
Any compliment I have received from
my parents are definitely the best
because I know for sure that they are
genuine.
What is success for you?

District Treasurer and Director of Finance – Rtr. Indeewarie Aryawansa
Most of you would know her as Indi, a dynamic and cheerful character in the Rotaract
District Committee for 2012/2013. She is currently sitting for her MSc at Heriot Watt
University while working at PAC Asia Services as a Student Counsellor. Having joined
Rotaract Club of Colombo North in the year 2010, this year she has progressed to the
position of Secretary of the Club.
If you are to
recommend
Rotaract to a
friend, what
will you tell
them?
I would tell
them that this
is the ideal
place for them
to build
themselves
while helping others and making good
friends.
What was the most memorable
moment in Rotaract for you?
Putting up with the craziness of the
members of my club and the district
while experiencing the unconditional
love they have for me. (Even though
they bug me all the time)
According to you, what can we as a
District do to strengthen and improve
the movement?
As District Officials, I think all of us
should work towards achieving the
common goals of Rotaract while making
sure that others around us are equipped
with the right knowledge and tools to do
so. I also believe we always should be
there for our fellow Rotaractors as and
when they need us ensuring that they
are guided in the right direction.
What is the most difficult thing about
being a Rotaractor?
Not knowing whether I should go home
after work or head to Dutch House with
a crazy bunch of Rotaractors!
Name one thing about yourself that
most people do not know.
If I say it, they will get to know it! So, I
might as well keep it to myself ;)
What quality of people do you hate the
most and why?
There is no such thing. People behave
the way they want to. So, one cannot
complain about another when no one is
perfect.
What is the best compliment you have
ever received?
Can’t remember the last time I ever
received one. (Note to Indi: I just gave
you a compliment in your introduction!
You are definitely one of the most
cheerful people I know)
What is success for you?
Doing what I want the way I want!

PETS & SETS Training Workshop 2012/2013
residents' Elect Training
Seminar and Secretaries Elect
Training Seminar (PETS &
SETS) is a unique training programme
designed for the members of Rotary
family worldwide. Rotaract 2012 /
2013, PETS & SETS training took place
in Southern Province, Unawatuna, Sri
Lanka on the 26th & 27th May 2012 at
Cormaran Beach Hotel. The event was a
result of the enduring effort of Rotaract
Clubs of Colombo Fort & Kandy on
behalf of the District Rotaract
Organisation of Sri Lanka.
PETS & SETS witnessed a participation
of more than 80 individuals who are to
be ranked at the top in the hierarchy of
all Rotaract Clubs. This programme
was not limited to logistical
aspects, which defines the roles,
responsibilities of officials and the
potential outcomes generated, but both
track and aesthetic sides of the next set
of leaders in New Generations.
Evening programmes, which were
targeted at the creative and inventive
aspects, were filled with pure
entertainment and laughter. It was a
wonderful platform for participants to
display their aesthetic talents on
stage. From the organizers side, the
programme was designed to increase
the unity among the Rotaract
hierarchy.
Overall, this year’s PETS & SETS of
Rotaract District 3220 was a super

These religious and cultural events
show the true spirit of Rotaractors, as

You Ready?” the official careers fair of
the university. Its success lies behind
the brand name that has been created
for Are you ready?. The project with its
humble beginning of less than 10
companies and 140 students have
become a venture of over 60 companies
and 600 students from all faculties of
University of Moratuwa. “Are You

other universities to organize similar
careers fairs in their respective
universities.

corporate world expectations in terms
of interviews, career progression and
personal branding. Most importantly,
they got the opportunity to be
interviewed by the giants in the
industry and through this majority of
them were able to find their much
sought after recruitment opportunities.
‘Engineers’ Forum’, the first of the five
sessions of ‘Are You Ready? 2012’
created a platform where the
engineering undergraduates could get a
reflective idea about the various aspects
that govern, affect or define an engineer
today.
‘The Benchmark’, the second session was
a workshop, which helped all the
undergraduates that were present to
brainstorm, explore and develop the
skills that an undergraduate should
inevitably possess.
The third session, ‘Be Known’, provided
a vivid experience to all who were
present and emphasized the importance
of having a strong personal brand,
which requires being connected to a
network of resources for mutual
development and growth.
The most important and eventful
session was the Flagship Day. Company

Dare to Dream and Succeed
nnovation: it often starts out with a
dream. Be it modest, fun or simply
out of the box, the best part about
dreaming is that it’s free. It may starts
out small, but it can grow into
smoothing colossal-something very
special so to speak.
It is an exciting and evolving process
that creates a distinctive space to
succeed and exceed expectations. When
it comes to business, it is essential that
one has the ability to execute this vision
effectively and successfully.
Imagination, creativity, ethics, good
governance, team effort and the
appropriate resources are some of the
key ingredients that go in to making a
dream turn into reality.
Additionally, they are also the
fundamentals that define an innovative,
successful and respected entrepreneur
or organization. Today, innovation is not
only about launching new products or
developing new technologies. It is all
about looking at what has not been done
before; or doing what has been done
differently, so that the needs of today
are catered to.
Innovation is about re-inventing
systems, new ways of marketing
communications and adding value to
people’s lives by means of what you
have created and created differently. To
succeed in this day and age business
needs to look at innovating with a
multidimensional approach.
Organizations that have done this
successfully can count on being
perceived as different, admired and
respected. The power of a positive
attitude is pivotal here, because the act
of innovating is often unpredictable.
Such an attitude can take you and your
business anywhere.
Mistakes will be made along the way;
but how you pick yourself up, learn
from them and deliver something great
is what’s important at the end of the
day. This is the mantra for business
respect and success. The entire team
needs to be believed in this mindset, to
be able to think with the customer in
mind and to be challenged everyday
with what he or she can do to make a
change. Leaders need to be able to
embrace this mindset and encourage it,
which is often what many find difficult
doing.

Maintaining this balance in a structured
organization and giving team members
the freedom to innovate are not easy to
do-but they are key to making a
difference. This mindset gives one the
ability to look beyond the present and
into a different future that is brimming
with infinite opportunities. The concept
of innovation can be applied to all areas
of life and business.
With this in mind, it is central for any
entrepreneur or company to
consistently look for fresh angles and
fine tune and evaluate the market they
target regularly. Moreover, in order to
succeed in anything you need to
innovate. It’s never an effortless
journey, when you are called upon to
deliver something new consistently but
the benefits are immeasurably
rewarding.
In addition, the end the innovators and
the innovative organizations make a
difference to the world in which we live.
They go on to be leaders, in their
respective fields, rather than becoming
followers. Innovation cannot remain the
same. It’s after all much like….those who
dare to dream.
Success is failure turned inside out,
The silver tint of the cloud of doubt
And you can never tell how close you are
It may be near when it seems so far
So stick to the game when you are
hardest hit
It when things seem worst that you
should not quit…
