E xploring, getting away from it all, recharging your batteries... Visiting Seine-et-Marne is like going to the discovery of an unexpected heritage, culture and terroir. This new magazine’s edition invites you to dive into the heart of a multifaceted county,

which will seduce you with its tourist offer that is both diverse, rich and singular.

An area that will whet your appetite for adventure or outdoor exercise, on foot, by bike or on the water. But our county also appeals to the imagination, with a unique heritage ranging from prehistoric times to contemporary history. A county that is a source of well-being, too, providing peace and quiet for a few days in the countryside, in our well-preserved villages.

This year across the county, there have been a number of new sites opening and existing sites reopening after renovation work: Parrot World in Crécy-la-Chapelle will take you on a journey into the biodiversity of South America, and after 15 years of renovation, you can now come back to the Saint-Ayoul Priory in Provins, to see the thousand-year-old historical site with your own eyes.

2020 will also be marked by the completion of a project to improve the attractivity of the area, led by a partnership of a number of key players across the territory, to create our own brand which will be the signature of Seine-et-Marne. It will allow us stand out across the whole territory, by revealing the hidden treasures and talents of the area!

In the meantime, this magazine is full of tips and ideas to go out: let yourself be tempted!A selection concocted by our tourist offices boards, whose advisers remain at your disposal available to help find you the activity, visit or event that will make your stay unique.

You will find it all in these pages... In Seine-et-Marne, everything is on hand for a welcoming stay, just a step or two away from Paris.

And since just one visit to Seine-et-Marne is never enough, we are already looking forward to seeing you again soon!

Taking it easy

At the Edentara animal education farm in Isles-les-Meldeuses, discover nearly 150 animals from the local area and further afield.

To hark back to your childhood, organise an afternoon’s fishing with the kids at the Etang du Chalet du Pêcheur in Congis-sur-Thérouanne.

Paintball Ourcadia in Crouy-sur-Ourcq offers “Splatmaster”, a supervised, gentler version of the activity, just for children aged 7 to 12.

Visit the hydraulic plant in Villers-lès-Rigault

This facility, a listed Historic Monument, made it possible to supply the Canal de l’Ourcq with water in the event of a drought. Today, it provides a reminder of the impressive technological advances of the 19th century in the field of hydraulic power use. Discover all the incredibly well-preserved mechanisms of this feat of engineering, on guided tours organised by appointment with the Au Fil de l’Ourcq association. The site will be open just for you!

Les 3 givrées is a brand of farm-made ice cream, frozen desserts and sorbets containing as many local ingredients as possible, created by 3 farming families. The main ingredient in their ice cream is milk from Hugues and Emmanuelle’s cows in Germigny-sous-Coulombs along with full-fat cream made with the milk on the farm. There are already about 40 flavours to taste, directly on their farm in May-en-Multien or in the shop for a “field to cone” experience, as they like to call it!

performances are extravagant and quirky. A real creative journey that takes us far away!

Festival-wise: PULP from 04/24 to 05/17 at the Ferme du Buisson. Marvelous Island – May 30th and 31st at the leisure island of Vaires-Torcy. By Has’Art du 06/30 to 07/09 (and a highlight 07/4-5) and in all municipalities of the agglomeration, the street arts get sloppy. Cernunnos Pagan Festival – Feb. 22th and 23rd at the Ferme du Buisson, original encounter between metal music and its folk, traditional and Medieval.

In Noisiel: La Ferme du Buisson is a national theatre, art centre and cinema all in one. It’s a place where imagination, innovation and creation come together to bring you exciting experiences... where the art forms mingle like nowhere else and events are constantly changing. We’ve already got the “Buisson” bug.

In Chelles: the Theatre focuses on the art of speech in all its forms, from traditional to innovative. Les Cuizines is more than just a cosy concert venue, it has welcomed artists such as Asaf Avidan, Moriraty and Brigitte. Club area, music quiz nights, jam sessions... it’s chilled here.

In Pontault-Combault: the CPIF (Ile-de-France Photography Centre) is a contemporary art centre devoted to still and moving images. Intriguing. Les Passerelles is a venue where

Get out, get together, and enjoy!

Thrill-seekers: head to Vaires-Torcy leisure island, the region’s top water sports centre, then try out the Torcy Canoë Kayak site or the one in Chelles for a white-water adventure in the regional nature reserve’s slalom area. Then take a dip in the wave pool before climbing the 18m wall at Nautil in Pontault-Combault.

Families: the Château de Champs-sur-Marne hosts family-friendly tours and workshops every half-term. Little ones can learn about the animals and pet them at Roissy-en-Brie wildlife park. Horse riders: head to Epona riding centre in Croissy-Beaubourg for parent-child workshops or introductory classes. Amazing!

I take part in the Oxy’Trail every year, and every edition is just as special as the last. Noisiel Park is a very pleasant venue for the entertainment village, a place for the whole family to have fun and relax. Then, the varied and fun races take you around the town and across the surrounding countryside. And of course the friendly volunteers are a great help. I’m really looking forward to the 27th and 28th June this year!

Take the connected walk challenge: with Baludik, 4 themed walking and cycling trails await you, with more puzzles added all the time. With Geocaching, roam the territory on a 21st-century treasure hunt combined with an orienteering race. Apps free to download.

Enjoy a taste of excellence: on the banks of the Marne, step through the doors of Le Quincangrogne in Dampmart, where the Michelin-starred chef Franck Charpentier serves generous and sophisticated cuisine. At the Château de Ferrières, after a cookery workshop, you can dine in the château’s drawing rooms at the restaurant Le Baron, run by Chef Patrick Juhel (who earned the Meilleur Ouvrier de France award in 2000). Or why not take a seat at Le Chai and indulge in their bistronomic cuisine.

Follow Valérie in Lagny-sur-Marne as you explore the old medieval town, whose lands have thrived on a variety of histories, each more unusual than the one before it. Set off for a “mystery tour” (on 04/08 & 04/15)... Unless you’re more of a film buff? You can find out all about local history and go behind the scenes at the independent cinema Le 5. At nightfall, discover what lies beneath the pavements of the town, on a weird and wonderful tour... (on 10/22 & 11/19). Info and booking at the tourist office.

An energy boost

Will you successfully complete the missions at the Enigmatic Live Escape Game in Ferrières-en-Brie, or Locked Up Marne-la-Vallée in Chanteloup-en-Brie? Why not set off on a quest with the Sentinels for Joan of Ark’s sword?

In the water: rowing, canoe-kayak... drift along the Marne with the water sports clubs, board the “Jour de fêtes” boat with East River (classic or after-work boat trips, breakfasts, etc.), then enjoy the high-quality bathing areas at Île de loisirs de Jablines leisure park, and its activities like cable skiing or sailing.

Whether milking cows with Brigitte on the Saint-Thibault-des-Vignes farm or attending a children’s workshop at the Moulin Russon mill in Bussy-Saint-Georges, you’ll find plenty of hands-on activities.

Make bread in an authentic water mill, still operating today!

The tourist office team invite you to the Moulin Russon in Bussy-Saint-Georges, a unique place in Ile-de-France. From flour-making to baking, the apprentices discover all the secrets to make a delicious part of their everyday diet: bread.

Initially modernised in 1852 with an English-style gear system that turned it into a small flourmill, the mill ceased operations in 1911 but was later renovated in 2004. Now it is once more used for its original purpose and is open to visitors.

S it on a terrace on the Fountain Square of Lagny-sur-Marne and enjoy the pleasantly urban

atmosphere. The hip shops and cafés are reminiscent of the capital, but without the crowds. You can already hear the babbling of the River Marne... Enjoy the shady riverbanks, while children play in the square nearby, a stone’s throw from the pier. There might even be a show taking place in the pretty bandstand. In the

19th century, Lagny and the surrounding area inspired artists, writers and painters like pointillist Georges Seurat. Creative effervescence is still in evidence in the fine arts area of the Gatien-Bonnet Museum and at the Château de Rentilly, which has been transformed into a work of art in its own right and hosts many festivals and shows. Here, time can slow down or take on a different tempo. Urban wanderings or a walk in the fields, in a park, by the ponds or at the heart of the Brosse Valley, no two landscapes are alike and people love to go hiking, cycling* or even horse-riding here.

*Adults’ and children’s bikes are available free of charge at 3 tourist sites in Lagny-sur-Marne and Bussy-Saint-Martin. Info: Maison des Mobiités +33 (0)1 60 93 52 72.

the remains of a castle that once belonged to Catherine de’ Medici have been the scene of many intrigues. Discover it during a guided tour.

Nature: get some fresh air at Pâtis Nature Park, the region’s biggest natural park with nearly 14 km of paths. The territory’s floral gardens have plenty to offer, too. Far more than just castles• The Château de Champs-sur-Marne was built in the countryside as an 18th-century holiday residence. It provided a brand-new “art of living” to the visitors who came to stay. If you are a fan of the series Downton Abbey, you’ll easily be able to imagine how the Duchy of La Vallière, Marquise of Pompadour, Diderot, Voltaire, Chateaubriand or Proust lived.

Illustrations by David Cochard. – From 08/19 to 11/2: Exhibition D’Or et d’Orient (Gold and the East) by Gabor Ulvecski The artist works gold, copper, brass and silver with other materials to create surfaces with bright colours, reflecting Art Nouveau. – Weekends from 11/20 to 12/13: Le Grand Réveillon shows - see how the Cahen d’Anvers family celebrated Christmas on the estate at the end of the 19th century.

• Deep in the Rentilly - Michel Chartier Cultural park lies a château like no other. Its stainless steel walls and reflective windows make its mirrored exterior reflect the sky and surrounding nature in an astounding way. The contemporary art centre inside is equally incredible. Year-round exhibitions and festivals spice up the venues including Printemps de Paroles from May 25th to 31st.

COUL OMMIER S PAYS DE BRIE, A PART OF T HE COUN T RYSIDE WI T H UNEXPECT ED FL AVOURS ®

Take a green and gourmet break

T hose weekends in the country we all dream of? This is the place to enjoy them. In the characterful villages

nestling in the valleys and amid the green hillsides divided by rivers, you immediately fall in love with these great open spaces. Meet friendly locals and make your dreams of freedom come true on a mountain bike circuit or hiking path, in a canoe-kayak or a pedalo. City-dwellers find the best of both worlds in towns with unexpected histories thriving amid unspoilt countryside. Couloummiers, renowned for its cheese, lies in the Grand Morin Valley. The river has

shaped the architecture of the town, right up to the Parc des Capucins, one of the most beautiful gardens full of flowers in Ile-de-France. For the last weekend in June, La Ferté-sous-Jouarre becomes the jazz capital and international artists bring the banks of the Marne to life. Jouarre is a real gem of monastic history and also a place to taste the authentic local products on offer. Parrot World will open during spring, for an incredible encounter with parrots and leopards from South America, at the heart of the French countryside, in Crécy-la-Chapelle.

A change of perspective

Adventures in the great outdoors: Why not test out the Coteaux du Morin et de l’Aubetin mountain biking trails, the “Grimpobranches” in La Ferté-sous-Jouarre. Hop aboard a canoe or kayak and set off down Grand Morin river between Pommeuse and Voulangis! Canoë 77 in Pommeuse, Les Meulières in La Ferté-sous-Jouarre or Loc’adventure.

Ship Ahoy: From La Ferté-sous-Jouarre, set off down the Marne aboard a Dutch Barge with the captain who will reveal all the secrets of the Marne to you. (Rives en rêves in La Ferté-sous-Jouarre).

Unexpected arts: La Galleria Continua – Les Moulins in Boissy-le-Châtel is a contemporary art gallery based in an old paper mill. The work by international artists on display is amazing (free admission). The Moulin Jaune in Crécy-la-Chapelle is a theatre garden that serves as a kind of creative laboratory for Slava Polunin, a Russian clown and is the location of the International Academy of Fools. Here, creative projects are developed by multi-disciplinary artists and the estate offers special events on a number of fixed dates.

The Ferté Jazz Festival! 26th to 28th June in La Ferté-sous-Jouarre: The 9th edition of Ferté Jazz! After Roberto Fonseca and Michel Jonasz in 2019, it’s now time for Deluxe and Kassav’ to make an appearance at this much-awaited event.

New! La Voix Verte

Saturday 20th June, come to this pop-up eco-village in Crécy-la-Chapelle for the Fête de la Voix Verte. A place to meet people, learn how to consume differently and get a fun and artistic introduction to ecology.

On the programme: exceptional concerts including a session from French singer Mathieu Chedid, a charity shop, environmentally-responsible restaurant, workshops for families and speeches.

www.lavoixverte.bio

and-seek with the children in the orchards, and picking local fruit is also a delight, especially when you round it all off with a lovely glass of juice from said fruit.

In your basket: there are many other farm products to enjoy. Directly in the local producers’ farm shops, you’ll find outdoor-reared poultry and eggs, meat and charcuterie from the area. In the character village of Aulnoy, Le Moulin de Chantemerle is an organic farm that you can visit to discover organic flour made from locally grown crops, like wheat, rye and flax.

They’re all mad about cheese in Jouarre: we love the dairy products from local farms like La Ferme Louis and La Ferme de la Chèvrerie du Marteroy. But visiting the ripening cellars and sampling Brie cheeses at Fromagerie Ganot remains one of our favourite treats (Saturdays at 4.30 pm).

Bubbly or otherwise: in Seine-et-Marne, just 3 municipalities have earned the Champagne (AOC) appellation - Citry, Nanteuil-sur-Marne and Saâcy-sur-Marne (booking required). The vines cling to the hillsides and flirt with other vineyards like Vigne en Vie in the character village of Guérard (guided tour and tasting, booking required). Strolling around, playing hide-

A wonderful walk at La Galleria Continua An incredible place lies a stone’s throw from Coulommiers: welcome to La Galleria Continua – Les Moulins in a former mill and paper pulp factory in the village of Boissy-le-Châtel on the edge of the Grand Morin. This historical landmark hosts renowned artists (Buren, Kapoor, Tayou) and future talents. 10,000m² of the former industrial site is devoted to contemporary art out of the factory’s 242,000m² surface area. Whether you’re an art enthusiast or not, this vast and unusual site is a wonder that intrigues or makes you smile... the cherry on the cake is that it’s free to visit. Every space is devoted to a creation or experiment in some cases. Feast your eyes on pieces whose sheer size or meaning makes them awe-inspiring. Questioning and discussing the art with your guide is bound to enhance your trip!

Guided tours without reservation from Wednesday to Sunday. www.galleriacontinua.com

Welcome aboard for a trip along the MarneAs you approach the shores of the Marne, it’s time for a real experience of the great outdoors in the plant and aquatic world. Feel the essence of the river as the light slowly changes around you.

You are worlds away from the busy streets of Paris, watch as a bird flies over your head, almost skimming the surface of the water. As soon as you climb aboard, in La Ferté-sous-Jouarre, you’ll feel the easy-going atmosphere of life on the water... the slow movements, lapping of the water, the soft breeze on your cheeks.

You’re living the life of a sailor, accompanied by the stories from your Captain. You’ll stop off at the foot of the hillsides of Champagne to learn about the land and winegrowing, getting a taste for the real pleasures in life.

Over a leisurely weekend break, the mind and body will be able to relax and unwind, with only the slow-moving waters to guide you.

Passing through the locks at a gentle pace, you will be obliged to slow down and just savour the moment.

Journey to South America with the biodiversity in Pays de Brie! This is the motto of Eric Vignot, the founder of the Parrot WildLife Foundation. Eric Vignot has always wanted to highlight natural balance, and the parrot is the very symbol of that. The goal of his unique visit is to increase awareness of the wonders of Mother Nature thanks to the charm of parrots and their natural ecosystem. It is thanks to this protective vision of Nature that he decided to create the Parrot World park in Crécy-la-Chapelle.

Plunge into the Amazon Rainforest! Animals from Amazon and Patagonia will show you the sheer wealth of the South American ecosystem and the diversity of animals that can be found there. Parrots, ibis, pink flamingos, jaguars, giant otters, Humboldt penguins, coatis, rheas, alpacas... They are all there! You can also see some dwarf goats and insects inside the “Small biodiversity” cabin.

An absolute must-see! 300 tropical birds flying freely around one of the biggest aviaries in Europe! Watch jaguars bathing from the underwater observatory. The giant otters of the Amazon sliding down a waterfall. You’ll see how these animals live in their own natural habitats.

The Jungle, for adventurers of the canopy, of all ages! Children can climb through the canopy raft, have a great time in this giant play area and feel like an adventurer of the canopy. You can enjoy a meal under a traditional village gazebo, where the Parrot Wildlife Foundation camp is located.

And why not extend this fantastic experience with an overnight stay in a lodge on stilts, 3 metres above the ground, with an exceptional panoramic view of the colourful wildlife of PARROT WORLD.

Opening scheduled for spring 2020 www.parrotworld.fr

Inspired stories in the Pays CréçoisThe forest and river have sculpted the Grand Morin Valley into a lush landscape which people love to stroll through. Washhouses, wells and fountains bubble up in the valley’s towns and villages. The charm of its peaceful country life won over artists such as Corot, Servin, Toulouse-Lautrec and Man Ray. These artists and countless other painters became friends in this land. These bonds inspired them to spend time here and you’ll learn all about the “valley of painters” on footpaths between Crécy-la-Chapelle, Villiers-sur-Morin and Saint-Germain-sur-Morin. Crécy-la-Chapelle, its collegiate church, belfry and “Tanner’s Dock” they are other local heritage gems that you’ll uncover.

Parcs Zoologiques LumignyCome and see for yourself the incredible diversity of the species found at the Lumigny animal parks!

Last year, the parks “Parc des Félins” (Big Cats Park) and “Terre des Singes” (Land of the Monkeys) merged under the name Parcs Zoologiques Lumigny. These two parks are spread over around a hundred hectares and you can come and visit for a day or over two days.

The first of the two is THE global specialist for big cats in captivity. Here you can discover the greatest diversity of cats in Europe in a natural setting, an educational farm and an immersive experience with lemurs in Madagascar. Hop aboard the Trans’Félins express to explore the entire park, and go to a showing in our 4D cinema.

Not to be missed: The annual early morning visits (18th July and 15th August) where you can watch some of the cats as the sun rises and enjoy a spectacular breakfast experience.

At the second park, you can take part in the various safaris to get as close as possible to the 50 Barbary apes living in this enclosure spread over 15 hectares. Approach them with care and watch how they go about their day, you can even participate in their care and watch their feeding time with a commentary from the passionate members of the park’s team, who have lots of stories to tell about these residents.

Not to be missed: The Parrot and Lorikeet Safaris. Come and observe the festival of sound and colours in the two aviaries where the parrots, budgies and other birds of the Amazon fly around above your heads. Highlight: you can feed them (see conditions at the park)! There are other species to be seen throughout the park.

Educational activities, 4D attraction, trains and a mini farm, are all included in your entrance ticket. Food outlets available in the park. You can purchase tickets online at: www.parcs-zoologiques-lumigny.fr

Always authenticLes Cueillettes du Plessis in Lumigny (opposite the Lumigny Wildlife Parks) will definetly surprise you with their Plessis Pop’s sparkling apple juice, medal-winning at the Agricultural Fair last year. What a way to remind us all of the Cozon family’s passion for picking your own fresh and tasty fruit, vegetables and flowers from their local production for 4 generations.

The Rabourdin brewery in Courpalay is famous for its Bière de Brie and has already won two silver medals at the main contest at the Agricultural Fair. They have attended the fair for 14 years and already have 25 medals to their name. That really makes us want to try it because here, the beer is 100 % local and made from barley grown by the Rabourdin family. They often open their farm-brewery to visitors to share their passion and introduce you to their range of 6 beers.

Bruno Clergeot, owner of the remarkable garden “La Roseraie de Provins”

When it blooms between late May and early June, the ‘Rosa Gallica Officinalis’, better known as the “Rose of Provins”, flourishes all over the town, in the rose garden amid 450 rose varieties, but also in the flower beds on the town’s streets. To appreciate all the subtlety of this ancient rose’s fragrance, you have to wait and be gentle. Run your nose slowly around the heart of the flower and breathe normally, hold your breath briefly between two inhalations. The best time to enjoy their fragrance is in the morning, as the night dew dissipates...

Summer in Provins is even more funThe atmosphere heats up as the mercury rises in the thermometer. And in Provins, it’s an opportunity to go out at night a bit more, to see the César Tower lit by 700 candles, admire equestrian and pyrotechnical animations... A time to enjoy concerts, sitting comfortably on a café terrace on Place du Châtel. It’s also a chance to bond with the whole town, to celebrate the harvest... In July and August, another kind of magic takes over the town, and other legendary stories are told. With a programme like that, we would gladly spend the summer there!

Hold tight! Lovers of vintage steam engines should head to Longueville for the Living Museum of the Railway, managed by the Association of Young People for the Maintenance and Preservation of Vintage Trains. We love these steam trains, like something out of an Agatha Christie book. We also adore the architecture of the rotunda, the depot where the engines are kept, and the town’s viaduct.

Saint-Ayoul Priory, where it all began for the medieval town of Provins This site is reopening after 15 years of renovation work! Construction, fire, reconstruction, demolition, renovation... the Saint-Ayoul Priory has been through so much over the years that a book could be written about its eventful history!

History dating back a thousand years The priory is part of the Saint Ayoul assembly and the church was in fact the first meeting place and venue for trade fairs in Provins. When the ruins of Saint Ayoul were first discovered, the place very quickly became popular with pilgrims and as a consequence, a number of merchants and other salespeople began to operate from the square in front. It was sold as national property at the end of the 18th century, and over the years it has housed the Administrative Offices for the town, the National Gendarmarie, Cavalry and the Army. In 1938, the apse was handed over to the Fine Arts division of the town, by the Ministry for the War. After that, some work was carried out and the monument started to receive recognition. This was the beginning of archaeological digs, research and consolidation work, among others. In 2003, the monument was acquired by the town of Provins and from then on, the digs and discoveries became commonplace, the construction was listed as a Historical Monument and significant renovation work was carried out.

One-of-a-kind architecture The results of these 15 years of renovation work is absolutely sublime and captivating. Some magnificent frescoes and painted plaster were revealed around the crossing and on the walls, evidence that the religious buildings of this time were colourful and decorated with shapes made up of religious symbols.

Tours with audio guide are offered all year round: • 2nd January to 27th March: weekends and public holidays, and every day during the French school holidays (zones B & C) from 2pm to 5pm. • 28th March to 30th August: every day from 10am to 6pm • 31st August to 1st November: weekends and public holidays from 10am to 6pm – weekdays 2pm to 6pm • 2nd November to 31st December: weekends and public holidays, and every day during the French school holidays (zones B & C) from 2pm to 5pm • Duration of the tour: Around 45 min. - Latest access 15 min. before the monument closes.

PRICES: adult €4.30 - child €2.80 (4 to 12 years old) Reduced rates for holders of the Pass Provins and Pass Famille: adult €2.80 - child €2 (4 to 12 years old) Annual closure of Saint-Ayoul Priory, 1st January and 25th December.

On the bell tower trailThe bell tolls at noon: time to enjoy a drink with the village restaurant owner, to make the walk even more enjoyable when we set off again. While some prefer to sit down on a bench in the shade to indulge in the art of napping, visitors to the area also include church-lovers, always in search of the local architectural treasures that reflect the soul of picturesque villages like Beauchery-Saint-Martin, Les Marêts, Paroy, Sourdun, Savins or Voulton. The most renowned are the seigniorial chapel of Baby and Lourps Chapel in Longueville... In a kind of pilgrimage from one village to another, we recommend returning to Provins via the Abbey Church of Saint-Loup-de-Naud. This Benedictine priory is one of the few Romanesque buildings in the region and even hosts concerts on some afternoons.

Ferra Botanica: an adventure for many!Take the Ferté-Gaucher vélorail for a fun ride, discovering wildlife and the flora in the heart of a sensitive natural area. In summer, dare to explore the nightlife at parties in theme. The return is under the stars and by the light candles. To live with family or friends!

www.ferrabotanica.com

They speak to you of a time you might not know about...Meet the guides working in the museums of the Provins area. A visit is sure to awaken the collector within you, for the memorabilia and objects of yesteryear have been given a new lease of life here... Like at the Montois de Luisetaines Museum based in an old presbytery, or the Museum of Provins and the Provinois, with displays of unique archaeological finds. In Rebais, the Museum of Printing immerses us in the world of graphic art and vintage typography. At the Museum of Life in the Past (Musée de la vie d’autrefois), the modern world is eclipsed as traditional trades and obscure beliefs come back to the fore. We don’t know which is more fascinating, the old dentist’s surgery or the witch’s den.

We love: the Museum of Seine-et-Marne in Saint-Cyr-sur-Morin for its various themes and a team of specialists that would make Google envious. The family permaculture workshops are organised in the learning garden, while on the ground floor, funny everyday objects and tools from the first half of the 20th century impress us. Upstairs, we explore the world of the extraordinary Pierre Mac Orlan. His house can also be visited, a stone’s throw from the museum. Even if you don’t know this gentleman, you will be drawn here by his writing, as Georges Brassens was.

Do not miss the reopening of the Museum of Seine-et-Marne in Saint-Cyr-sur-Morin on 7 June 2020, with an exceptional exhibition dedicated to the essential painters to the writer Pierre Mac Orlan.

The true taste of apple Surprising: Towards Béton-Bazoches, we love to rediscover the workings of the monumental apple press dating from 1850. Imagine, right there, the horse pulling the sandstone millstone weighing 700 kg. Hundreds of hectolitres of apples juice were obtained in this way. It makes you thirsty just thinking about it. Let’s raise a glass to the apple!

S traddling Essonne and Seine-et-Marne, modern urban and unspoilt nature come together

with flair here. The best example of this perfect pairing is at the weekend when fashionistas shop ‘til they drop at Westfield Carré Sénart and Galeries Lafayette whilst nature lovers explore the great outdoors in the forest. Sénart Forest has a mysterious side to it. It was initially a sacred forest for druids before becoming one of the French royalty’s favourite hunting grounds. A pathway links it to Rougeau Forest, an equally famous former property of the Savigny Templar Commandery.

Get together for a night at L’Empreinte, a cosy and magical cauldron of current music, or at Théâtre-Sénart which needs no introduction. Its first class schedule of dance, music and circus arts often grabs our attention but what we really love are the more unusual events such as the musical flea market or quirky camp site.

The Pouilly-le-Fort school house: go back in time and find yourself on the benches of a 20th century classroom. Writing workshop, moral lesson, math problem to solve will be there during this visit!

Street art spots in Lieusaint and Savigny-le-Temple: after David Walker in 2017 on Rue de Paris and TwoOne in 2018 on Rue de Tigery, it’s Italian artist Agostino Iacurci’s turn to paint a giant mural on the side of a building at 33 Avenue des Platanes. Two other XXL pieces brighten up Savigny’s streets: the Urban Tree by Romain Froquet at 2 Rue Haute and the Follow the Leader fresco by Fintan at 10 Avenue Jules Vallès.

Safran Aerospace Museum: the only museum devoted to plane engines from the start of aviation to the present day. A special gallery plays host to a collection of engines, launcher and satellite models and gives you an insight into spacecraft propulsion. You’ll start daydreaming about being a pilot or astronaut.

Le Domaine de la Grange - la Prévôté in Savigny-le-Temple: admire hundreds of plant species living together in an incredible arboretum then visit the orchard-conservatory and kitchen garden, one of the biggest in the region.

Take on the challenge

Escape room chaos: at the Safran Museum on the 2nd Saturday of the month, the theme is conquering space. Will you manage to save the ECLIPSE I ship’s crew at Carré Sénart deep in the Virtual Adventure? Koezio, Lockedup Carré Sénart and Escape Game Yourself in Lieusaint are among the addresses you can’t escape from, unless you accept your new mission: test them all in under a week.

Float on air: experience free-falling with Anti-Gravity in Villaroche and spread your wings. On the agenda: a tube that’s 2.5m wide by 6m high on a platform standing 4m off the ground and 180km/hr winds to fly like a bird. Admit it, you’ve always wanted to do it haven’t you?

Available in the new

shop from the tourist office Melun Val de Seine

B arely half an hour from Paris Gare de Lyon station, Melun is a well-known town that has

developed around its island Saint-Étienne and the river Seine. The most surprising thing about it is the contrast between the town and the nature that’s so close by. Some prefer to head to one of the many parks to read. Others choose to explore the unique features of each of the area’s 3 sensitive natural areas. Walkers and cyclists, meanwhile, can get about easily on the 125 km of paths reserved for them and can take a break at the tourist office board accredited Accueil Vélo. The banks of the Seine are among our favourite spots, around the island or heading towards the

south bank to see the famous “Affolantes”. And if your walk ends with a trip to the Gaillardon market, the most renowned in Melun, you’ll already have had a lovely introduction to the town’s personality. All that’s left to do is book your yoga cruise, commented tours or choose from a wide range of other possibilities to explore Melun Val de Seine very differently.

Have fun and try something new!

On foot or by bicycle: Discover the Vaux-le-Vélo cycle path. These walks or bike rides will take you from Melun to the Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte along 3 adapted itineraries: 2 for bicycles and 1 for pedestrians, along the path of the GR1. Whether you are coming as a family, you are a sports enthusiast or looking for new discoveries, choose the path that suits you best and let it lead you to Nicolas Fouquet’s famous castle.

Culture and you: The Micro-Folie has opened in Melun! This digital museum can be found inside the Astrolabe media library and offers you unique and rather innovative access to an exhibition that displays over 100 works of art from 12 national institutions and museums such as the Musée du Louvre.

Taste: Take part in a gourmet walking tour for an original discovery of the built and culinary heritage of Melun. You will enjoy tasting local products at the various shops throughout the town!

More information at the Tourism Board.

The Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte needs no introduction. The fruit of Nicolas Fouquet’s visionary mind, here you can admire the work of 3 of the greatest artists of the 17th century: the architect Louis Le Vau, the decorator Charles Lebrun and the landscape gardener André Lenôtre. Between May and October, it offers a fantastical experience thanks to the candlelit evenings that end with a firework display. For the very first time in a French château, learn about the Fouquet affair with a brand-new sound experience.

Come and see the heritage sites at the National Gendarmerie Museum in Melun. The visitor can learn all about the history of France, thanks to the diversified and abundant collection. New: From 6th May 2020, see how the “gendarme” is portrayed on the screens. See some of the iconic references and famous sayings at the museum.

With 2,000 years of history behind it, the town of Melun is also full of surprising monuments. The Collegiate Church of Notre-Dame, the Priory of St. Saviour, the Church of St. Aspais and the remains of old fortifications are among the treasures to see on the historical trail and during the unusual or late-night tours organised by the tourist office.

More confidential stories can be “dug up” in the characterful villages like Seine-Port, founded by Madame de Montesson back in the day, and Maincy, where the harbour was once painted by Cézanne. Then come and see the Rubelles earthenware and the museum which serves as a place of memory and remembrance for the town. This place reminds us of the key role Rubelles plays in the French earthenware industry.

The Great Escape

Take your time exploring the charming village of Maincy, enjoy a long brunch, and why not visit the Château Vaux-le-Vicomte.

For a whole different perspective of the heritage sites here, visit the old industrial sites such as the Leroy factory, a former wallpaper factory in Saint-Fargeau-Ponthierry.

Unveil the heritage secrets of Melun Val de Seine during one of our guided tours in Melun, Seine-Port or elsewhere...

Take the moments of relaxation even further with a deep breath of fresh air while looking for mushrooms in the forest.

You can truly connect with nature with the “Balade Branchée” application, to explore the fragile natural areas in Livry-sur-Seine or La Rochette.

Contact the tourist office to compose the beautiful breakaway you need!

Jewels in the heart of BrieIf you haven’t heard of Saint-Eliphe Church in Rampillon (late 13th century), it’s because you’re not a religious art lover. Its sandstone construction contrasts with its radiant interior. Its doorway, sculptures of the 12 apostles and the knights’ tombs that lie here make it a unique treasure in the history of the region. Another site that was famous throughout Europe in the Middle Ages: Saint-Martin collegiate church in Champeaux. The Renaissance stained glass windows, tombstones and sculpted tablets take you back to a time when religion was central to everyday life. Any more and you’d hear Gregorian chants echoing.

Nangis is in the heart of Brie between Melun and Provins. Saint-Martin-et-Saint-Magne Church is listed as a Monument Historique and is a sight for sore eyes. As is the Château de Nangis and its grounds, a former medieval fortress. Many of the buildings in the old town have the architecture you’d expect of this part of Brie. Footpaths around town introduce you to the surrounding countryside. Before you go, ask to try some Brie de Nangis, it’s milder, smaller and not as famous as its fellow cheeses.

So much to do in Saint-Fargeau-PonthierryCome and discover something new at the multi-disciplinary cultural centre and industrial place of memory, Les 26 Couleurs. This place has a unique and rich programme of events, including musical shows, theatre productions and concerts. While you’re there, you can also learn about the history of the Leroy factory which became the top European manufacturer of wallpaper during its 140 years of existence, half of which was in Saint-Fargeau-Ponthierry. There are a number of guided tours available at the centre or with the Melun Val de Seine Tourism Board.

The Saint-Fargeau Vines is an example of one of the underrated heritage sites we really love to visit. In the 19th century there were around 80 winegrowers there. The vines provided a quality of wine (mainly white wine) that was particularly enjoyed by kings and their courts. Volunteers from the Saint Vincent Fellowship helped to rebuild the vines which are now waiting to be seen for a first guided tour, scheduled for the 30/05.

Those just looking for some good old-fashioned fun can come to the leisure complex. It covers 25 hectares of the natural environment, including 3 ponds, meaning there’s a wide range of activities here for the whole family. For those who enjoy horse-riding, a horse-riding centre has just opened.

Val d’Ancoeur Rallies Ancoeur is the name of a river that flows for almost 42 km until it reaches the confluence of the Seine in Melun. Since 1985 it has been listed as an “exceptional site” and the enchanting landscapes of this area are spread across cultivated land and forest clearings surrounded by wooded areas. At the very heart of this valley, we can make out some ancient towns and charming villages such as Blandy-les-Tours, Maincy and Moisenay. The remarkable heritage sites will test your knowledge as you explore the must-see places and some more private, hidden ones. Some of the treasures to discover are the Collegiate Church of Champeaux, Saint-Méry Church, the Château d’Aulnoy, Château de Vaux le Vicomte and Château de Blandy. The locals of the area are currently involved in drawing up a landscape plan of the “Val d’Ancoeur”, with the goal of protecting and enhancing the resources here.

In the meantime, you can get a taste for the area by taking part in the Val d’Ancoeur Rallies on Sunday 31st May 2020 in Bombon and Saint-Méry. On the programme: 2 walking rallies, 1 photo exhibition, competitions, botanical walking tours, horseback riding, bike rides, local farmer’s market, arts and crafts and entertainment of all kinds!

Once upon a time... more than a fortress in Blandy-les-Tours Once upon a time there was a fortress in the Brie countryside that was a home, farm and ruin before becoming a thriving artistic design centre for the last 20-odd years. It’s fascinating to visit the towers, ramparts and keep and the unobstructed views of the characterful village of Blandy are worth the detour. The guided family tour is ideal with games to suit all ages. There are even mysteries from Cluedo for teenagers to solve. The best place to hear the story is in Blandy-les-Tours where a medieval architectural wonder turned artistic fortress stands. Gesticular theatre/hip hop, concerts, airborne fable, contemporary circus... An entire cultural schedule awaits and it goes by the name of “Blandy Sundays”.

Some other events in the calendar: – 4th and 5th April: the “Journées des plantes et art du jardin” (Garden Art and Plants Festival) will be held at the château – the 16th and 17th May: a weekend of historical enactments for May Médiéval – From the 12th July for the closing ceremony of the Heritage Festival and until the 20th September: the castle will be illuminated at night (on Friday and Saturday evenings only) – On Thursdays from the 6th to the 20th August: “Les Créneaux de la Nuit” are organising 3 open-air cinema showings (Maleficent, Beauty & the Beast, Shrek) – 27th August: La Traviata de Verdi opera will resonate across the area (stage direction by Simon Stone, 2019)

Exhibition “Les Gendarmes Crèvent l’Ecran. De Cruchot à Marleau” 6th May to 31st December 2020 We often see “gendarmes” (military police officers) on our screens, whether they are on the TV or in films. Depicted first as a simple figure, then as the main character, the “gendarme” is just as often torn apart as he is admired. Much like the “gendarmerie” institution has evolved over time, the role of the “gendarme” in fiction has also changed quite significantly since its very first appearance. From Cruchot to Marleau, even right back to the silent films, discover the “gendarme” on the screen from all angles. There are some iconic references and famous sayings. Extracts, photograms and soundbites will add to the pieces of the National Gendarmerie Museum in Melun’s collection, as well as some pieces on loan from partner institutions.

W hen you think of Fontainebleau, the first thing that comes to mind is the famous Château.

This French heritage treasure is the only château in France to have hosted rulers for over a thousand years. The vast site is home to 4 museums to visit. Soak up the French-style gardens and Château grounds in myriad ways: sail on the carp pond, take a horse-and-carriage ride, hop on the mini train or visit during the Django Reinhardt Jazz Festival. The château watches over the town centre so settle down at a terrace

or explore the pedestrian streets packed with food shops and designer boutiques. You can really soak up the lifestyle here. Forest, floral grounds, Seine banks... nature is everywhere and there are countless footpaths and bike paths including the Scandibérique.

On the agenda: Art History Festival 7-9/06, Django Reinhardt Festival 4-7/07 and all year at the Grand Parquet: famous competitions and major events celebrating Fontainebleau’s horse riding legacy.

Let’s go outside!

Power up: at Bois-le-Roi water sports centre where you can go canoeing, kayaking and paddling plus there’s a pony club for rides, treetop adventure, skatepark and golf driving range to grab your attention.

Rock up: Fontainebleau is among the best climbing spots in the world and lots of groups flock here (almost) every Saturday. For beginners and up for 3 hrs, a day, week or weekends: anything goes with Globe Climber and the Tourist Info Office.

It’s a dog’s life: Get a taste for mushing with Christian and his dogs. Whether dog hiking or sledding with 12 dogs, Fontainebleau Forest becomes a mountain. Also available at the Tourist Office.

Boissy-aux-Cailles: the smallest village in the Seine-et-Marne to be awarded the Village with Character award. It feels like you’re in a cocoon protected by pretty houses with calm unspoilt nature to explore on foot, by bike or on horseback. The cherry on the cake is the 13th century church built on a headland.

Bourron-Marlotte: the village between the forest of Fontainebleau and Loing river banks has an understated and honest charm that attracted countless artists. Corot, both Renoirs (painter and director), Cézanne, Henri Murger, Oscar Wilde, Ernest Reyer, Jules Boucherit and many more have been here. “In the artists’ footsteps” is a trail tells you their tale whilst you walk.

Samois-sur-Seine: this village on the banks of the Seine exudes romance, is known as “Cradle Island” and hosted the Django Reinhardt Jazz Festival and “Affolantes”. Make like the 19th and 20th century artists: wander along the banks and footpaths in the old town, climb the rocks close to Denecourt Tower and soak up the beautiful setting.

Barbizon: this is where the Pre-Impressionist movement began with artists such as Rousseau, Monet and Corot. They were all regulars at the Auberge Ganne which is now the Musée des Peintres art museum. Visit Jean-François Millet’s studio too (in the same street). Then go for a walk around the galleries and shops. Last but not least, wander through the pine forest, venture down the paths and explore a bandit’s cave... be warned, you may see an elephant!

Recharge your batteries in the Forest of Fontainebleau

The Forest is listed as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and there are lots of outdoor activities to discover.

How? On guided tours, dog sledding, climbing trails and nature therapy (also known as sylvotherapy: a popular practice in Japan to release stress through walking & the trees’ energy which you will end up wanting to hug). Available to buy at Tourist Information Office and the website. Forest guided tour: 15€/adult - 8€/child, dog sledding for beginners: 48€/adult - 36€/child, sylvotherapy session: 45€/adult, introduction to climbing: 35€/adult - 25€/child.

The intriguing and peaceful the Forest of Fontainebleau is ideal for recharging your batteries and getting up close with nature. For example, on our guided tours we go near a dune whose wind-whipped sand is 60 million years old. Then there’s a purple heath where birds in all colours and with all callings fly. These are the magical moments in the forest’s amazing nature and incredible biodiversity that I love sharing with others. The rocky rubble, reef flats and views are also truly inspiring and it’s a real joy guiding visitors in this world!

M oret-sur-Loing is an idyllic town that’s a world away from city life. This medieval town nestled by

the Loing, a tributary of the Seine, oozes charm and is a magical place to visit. Go through the large gates and walk down the Grande Rue, around the majestic church and dungeon then visit the Maison du Sucre d’Orge (candy canes have been a local speciality since the 17th century) and have fun spotting landscapes painted by Alfred Sisley, one of the first Impressionists. Another must-do: the bike museum. From the dandy horse to the Super Champion

derailleur, the life of the bicycle is presented in a collection of rare items.

In the agenda : aperitif concerts in Flagy in June and July, the Rencontres Internationales de la Harpe en Île-de-France from the 12th to 14th June and the Fête 1900 on the 26th and 27th September in Moret-sur-Loing.

Spot, scout, sample!

Sit down for a minute at one of the Marais d’Episy observation platforms. Take a stroll, spot, hear and admire the rare plant species and wildlife living here. A perfect opportunity for children to learn.

in Sisley’s work. Saint-Mammès’ streets and alleys are packed with hidden gems related to the history of canal shipping.

Thomery: the village nestled in a bend in the Seine is famous for producing the Chasselas Doré grape variety. Come and gaze at over 300km of grape walls in the Salomon gardens where vines were grown until the mid-20th

century. One of our favourite spots: Château Rosa Bonheur. Nothing’s changed in the artist’s studio. Rosa Bonheur could walk in to finish one of her canvasses any minute.

Flagy: with its many bridges and walkways over the Orvanne, the village has its own picturesque charm. Since the village was used as the location for “Bonne Pomme“, starring Gérard Depardieu and Catherine Deneuve, all the locals have been keen movie buffs.

Montigny-sur-Loing: fall under the spell of this peaceful country village like artists and writers of old. The viaduct through the town centre and St Paul & St Pierre Church are amazing. The beautiful waterfront villas are awe-inspiring. The forest and Sorques Plain, the largest sensitive natural area of the department, are ideal for are ideal for walks and horse rides.

The Château Rosa Bonheur in Thomery

Come and see the workshop of Rosa Bonheur, a French painter from the 19th century. The artist was specialised in painting animals and decided to purchase the Château de By and estate next to Fontainebleau Forest in 1859, to flee from society and to be as close as possible to nature. She lived there until her death in 1899. Everything is still as she left it in her workshop: her blouse, glasses, palette, etc. We can imagine that Rosa Bonheur could come back at any moment to finish her painting! After your tour, why not stop off at the château tearoom.

Two museums with two very different atmospheres In Nemours, at the Prehistory Museum you can travel back to the origin of Ile-de-France The evolution of Man extends over 600,000 years, from the first Australopithecus to Homo-sapiens, and stops at the decline of the Gallic era. In an ultra-modern building made from glass and concrete, the main steps of known Prehistory in Ile-de-France are recreated. There are some superb collections with more than two million rare objects to come and discover. The annual highlights for the museum include exhibitions and events dedicated to contemporary artists from various creative worlds (photography, sculpture, painting, literature, etc.).

Further south in Seine-et-Marne, in Egreville, the Bourdelle museum-garden can be found alongside a main road. Pass through the wooden door and you’ll enter into a cosy cocoon where nature and works of art are intertwined. Antoine Bourdelle’s second daughter lived here after the death of the sculptor. A tour of this open-air museum will lead you around 58 monumental bronze sculptures, such as the famous archer Heracles. The Art Deco garden enclosed by a curtain of trees is a colourful and poetic place. You will also see some specimens from the animal world. All year round, short courses and workshops dedicated to art are organised.

S potting shapes in clouds has always been our favourite game, but in Pays de Nemours, we have fun with

the rocks instead. The eagle with its wings spread out, the tortoise and the elephant make up an imaginary bestiary, carved into the rock with the passing centuries. Numerous hiking paths immerse you in a fantastical world, between forest and blockfield. Secret grottoes, a “beach” of fine sand and stunning views... are these not the ingredients of an ideal place to explore on holiday? If anyone asks, the best-known rock is the Dame Jouanne.

Where: the Commanderie forest in Larchant (also renowned for its climbing rocks for all levels of ability), Nemours municipal forest located behind the

Departmental Museum of Prehistory (the GR13 goes by there), the old sand quarry in Ormesson, the Gréau rock park in Saint-Pierre-lès-Nemours... Basically, a surprising natural landscape at the heart of the French Gâtinais Regional Nature Park, which stretches into this land of a thousand faces. Thrills or

chill time?

Paddling down the Loing in a canoe, straddling a leisure bike or mountain bike to take the Scandibérique, going on a horse ride, climbing on a few rocks... There are so many options that one weekend isn’t long enough to try everything.

Thrills: Buthiers leisure island has its classic attractions, but we have a few favourite activities of our own: spider’s web, catapult, splash pad, barefoot trail, etc.

Chill: on the panoramic vedette boat Zia, we discover the hidden landscapes of Pays de Nemours. The captain has so many stories to tell. Departure to Montcourt-Fromonville (1h30), stopover possible in Nemours.

The Loing Canal Boats allow you to rent a electric boat without license, for 1 hour or the day.

Ile de loisirs leisure complex in Buthiers continually cross paths on the marked trails or on the banks of the Essonne river.

Larchant: paradise for rock climbers and walkers, where nature is omnipresent and varied. The lofty Mathurin Basilica can be seen from afar. Its architecture impresses us every time and we imagine we’re professional photographers each time we take a snap. We spend magical hours there.

Grez-sur-Loing: the houses with coloured shutters proudly proclaim that they were once the homes of foreign painters whose works are on display in the town hall-museum. The river flowing beneath the medieval bridge also sets the tone. We stop there a while to chat with one of the local artists. He tells us the ideal spot to paint the Ganne Tower.

Nemours: Paris isn’t the only city to be divided into right and left banks. In Nemours, the left bank of the Loing is where the medieval castle stands, the emblem of the town that has now been turned into a museum. In 2020, the Museum is revealing its archives for this temporary exhibition “Le Musée sort de ses réserves” until the 27th December. Plus: you can still explore the château using virtual reality.

Boulancourt: The Two majestic Towers at the entrance of the village are intriguing. The discreet church watches over the town and its crooked spire makes it a unique construction. It’s not as peaceful here as it seems. Hikers, fishermen, mountain bikers and people participating in the sports activities at the

Scandibérique. The bike path takes you on a ride through the Seine-et-Marne’s typical southern landscape. There’s a medieval loop covering around ten kilometres, off the Pilgrims Route, to explore the town of Château-Landon. This charming medieval village is breath-taking with the ramparts and atmosphere characteristic of a hilltop village in the south of France. Mont-Saint-Michel will come to mind when you see the

impressive Saint-Séverin Abbey and its 30 metre buttresses. Pretty paths and wooden bridges will introduce you to countless tales and talents. Villages with personality, charming hamlets, lakes with wriggly fish... it feels like a holiday in the countryside.

Like an oasis: explore bronze sculptures by Rodin’s student in idyllic Art Deco-style grounds at the Bourdelle Museum in Égreville.

Château-Landon: stone and air. The village stands on a rocky headland overlooking the lush Fusain valley. Tabarderie Park and the Prés Patouillats marsh at the foot of the ramparts provide an unrivalled view of the town and its old Saint Séverin Abbey.

Souppes-sur-Loing: stone and water. The Loing riverbanks and canal side have become pretty spots for a walk. The town is famous for its stone quarries and you can now stop at the nautical “Port aux Pierres” minutes from the town centre. You can still see prehistoric polishers that were used to make tools and bear witness to the town’s history. You’ll be struck by the harmony of the Gothic St Clair & St Léger church’s tall nave, even from this far away.

Halls of fame: the 13th century church in Beaumont du Gâtinais is surrounded by a former château’s outbuildings and traditional 17th century market halls. A former presbytery, dovecote and washhouses add to the charm of this country village. Égreville bears witness to the importance of markets in Gâtinais towns since the Middle Ages. Old houses pack in around the Gothic church and 16th
