Why I started DevOps.com

• DevOps represents a chance to get it right

• A new way of doing old things

• Anything that brings teams together can’t

be bad

• New times call for new ways

• Taking lessons learned for a course

correction


What DevOps is not

• Doesn’t defy the laws of physics or IT

• At the end of the day it is another adoption

in a line of IT adoption cycles

• Geoffrey Moore’s “Crossing the Chasm”

rules apply

• It is different yet not different


Adoption Cycles


Where are we now?


Is there one size DevOps

• DevOps is DevOps no matter the size of

the organization

• However, we would be foolish not to

realize that each organization brings its

own history, views and experience to the

equation


Unicorns

• The mythical, magical

Unicorns

• They almost all do DevOps.

While many seek to emulate

them or find the key to their

magic, others say they are a

breed apart and what works

for them will not work for

those on the other side of

the chasm.


Elephants

Elephants or as some people call them Horses are large enterprises.

Surprisingly they are adopting DevOps at a rapid pace. Various sources claim upwards of 80% either have adopted or plan to adopt DevOps soon.

What does this mean?

What is unique about their adoption cycles


The Mice

• Elephants are scared of mice. The mice

are nimble enough to run in between the

elephants legs. They are fast and quick.

• Mice do what they have to do to survive.

Startups are like mice. DevOps and

Cloud are as natural to them as loving

cheese is for mice. But at the end of the

day startups are not the mainstream.

• Startups can still help DevOps cross the

chasm


How do we do DevOps?

• From each according to his ability, to

each according to his need ~ Karl Marx

• DevOps is not some form of Communism

• But we must realize that it is hard enough

instituting cultural change and new ways.

• Use what is comfortable for organizations

to help them adopt
