Understanding Protocols 1 day

A protocol is a convention or a standard that controls or enables the connection, communication or data transfer between two endpoints. In its simplest form it can be defined as a set of rules governing the syntax, semantics and synchronisation of communication. Protocols can be hardware, software or a combination of both. Most people do not realise that protocols are present in many places in our everyday life and this course introduces to different protocols that Engineers come across commonly. Some of the topics included are:

• What is meant by Protocols • How do Protocols work • OSI 7 layer model • TCP/IP Protocol Suite • Core Network Protocols • Access Network Protocols • Mobile Network Protocols • Other Wireless Protocols • Multimedia Protocols • VoIP Protocols

High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) 1-2 days

HSDPA, short for High Speed Downlink Packet Access (also referred to as 3.5G) is being rolled out currently by most of the 3G operators. The biggest advantage of HSDPA is fast downloads enabling end users to view video clips seamlessly with high quality. Some of the topics included are:

• Need for HSDPA • HSDPA Architecture • HSDPA channels • MAC changes for HSDPA • Impact on Iur/Iub • Signaling examples • Introduction to HSDPA Enhancements

This course can be customized depending on the audience. For more technically minded people we try to explain technical details but for non-technical people we try and explain more about efficiency and need for HSDPA and comparing it with other technologies like WiMax.

High Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSUPA) 1 day

HSUPA, short for High Speed Uplink Packet access (also known as 3.75G) was designed to compliment HSDPA and increase the UL data transmission speeds to 5.8Mbps in the uplink. HSUPA is very important, as this in combination with HSDPA will make mobile broadband possible. Some of the topics covered are:

• HSUPA Network architecture • Resource Allocation • E-DCH Basics • Physical and Transport Channels • HSUPA MAC • MAC scheduling • Adaptive Modulation and Coding (AMC) • Mobility and Soft Handover • Resource Management and Resource Allocation

This course can be customised to include more technical details if required.

Evolved High Speed Packet Access (HSPA+) 2 days

This course is a combination of the HSDPA and HSUPA courses but is more focused on the HSPA evolution based on Release 7. HSPA evolution is the first step towards the Long Term Evolution (LTE) of the UMTS networks. HSPA Evolution will help increase the data rates to up to 40Mbps and will help UMTS remain competitive compared to alternative technologies like WiMAX. The main updates in HSPA+ are the use of Higher Order Modulations (HOMs) and Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) antennas. From operator point of view, HSPA is beneficial compared to OFDM because the changes required in the Physical layer are still less compared to a completely new approach.

Robust Header Compression (RoHC) ½ day

RoHC has recently gained lot of significance as it has been adopted as a header compression scheme for IMS and MBMS. RoHC has also be defined for 2.5G (GPRS) and according to 3GPP2, in CDMA2000 1xEV-DO and 1xEV-DV (Release B and onwards) system. IETF standard RFC 3095, which specifies RoHC, supports compression of IP headers including IPv4, IPv6, UDP, RTP and ESP on a per hop basis. The compressed header size is reduced to around 1-3 bytes. Some of the topics covered are:

• Header compression basics • RoHC Compressor States • RoHC Decompressor • RoHC Modes • U-Mode • O-Mode • R-Mode • RoHC in UMTS

Fundamentals of WiMAX 1 day

Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) is a standards-based wireless technology for providing high-speed, last-mile broadband connectivity to homes and businesses and for mobile wireless networks. WiMAX is similar to Wi-Fi but offers larger bandwidth, stronger encryption, and improved performance over longer distances by connecting between receiving stations that are not in the line of sight. At present WiMAX is being ignored by the big operators and equipment manufacturers at the same time there is very strong interest in the technology by small players. This interest can turn the tide in favour of this technology and promises to create a potential rival to LTE and 4G. Some of the topics covered are:

• Introduction to 802.16 family • Overview of WiMAX and mobile-WiMAX • OFDM and OFDMA • Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) • Networking and Service Aspects • Physical Layer • MAC Layer • Network Architecture • Performance

WiMAX and 4G Wireless 1 day

WiMAX is dubbed as 4G technology and being sold as 4G. The truth is that this is equivalent to 3.9G LTE and is in direct competition to that. The only similarity is that WiMAX, LTE and (probably) 4G uses OFDM but 4G has not yet been finalized and may use another technology. This course covers the following topics:

• WiMAX Introduction and releases • WiMAX Architecture • WiMAX technical details • Comparison between WiMAX and HSPA and LTE • Introduction to 4G Technology and IMT-Advanced • 4G latest developments and status • Look at different proposals for 4G
