VERSATILE KNOW-HOW IN MARITIME SECTOR

We conduct academic research in the maritime fi eld. Our research activities give us a strong base for the services we can off er; education expertise and tailor-made research projects that meet the needs of our customers and partners.

Shortsea Promotion Centre (SPC) Finland is part of the Centre for Maritime Studies. International transport solutions that combine shortsea shipping with rail, road and inland waterways are the focus of SPC Finland’s activities.

Centre for Maritime Studies was founded in 1980.

VERSATILE KNOW-HOW IN MARITIME SECTOR

Th e Centre for Maritime Studies is an education and research centre located in Turku, Finland. We are part of the Brahea Centre of the University of Turku. We specialize in the field of maritime traffic, logistic chains and infrastructure, and port operations.

We support the development of the operational preconditions of maritime traffi c and logistic chains. We focus on the acts that help to maintain the competitiveness of businesses. Improvement of the safety culture and sustainable use of the environment are also our focal areas.

EDUCATION EXPERTISE

We have a long experience of educating maritime professionals. We provide continuing education for the specific needs of the maritime field, e.g. ports and maritime traffic.

We also lead and participate in a wide range of international projects such as Interreg and Erasmus+. We have developed, for example, learning materials on environmental impacts and regulations, maritime policy, maritime English and cargo securing.

Our training expertise is supported by strong research know-how in the maritime and logistics sectors.

We can offer training for organisations’ preciseneeds, e.g. in maritime transport, port operations, environmental impacts on maritime traffic and ports, and infrastructure in ports. We can offer customized and on-site training.

TRAINING MODULE: MARITIME TRANSPORT AND PORT OPERATIONS

Course type: Professional development (3–3,5 ECT)

Duration: lectures 5,5–6 days, depending on the extent of the optional part. In addition, each participant carries out, reports and presents a project assignment which is related to participants’ own work duties.

Target groups: the training module is aimed for persons working at seaports and/or with maritime transport who wish to update their knowledge, and also for new and future entrants to the maritime industry (e.g. recent graduates or persons starting a career in maritime transport industry with non-maritime education).

Language of instruction: English

1. The role of seaports in global logistics chains (lectures) 1 day

• Maritime transport and port operations globally; maritime transport supply and demand, main transport routes

• Commodities transported and vessel types • Seaports as a part of logistic chain: types

and functions of ports, port centric logistics and warehousing

• Key stakeholders in and for ports; port users, local community, port and terminal operators, administration and government agencies

• Port management and port ownership structures; roles and functions

• Maritime transport economics• Current trends and challenges

2. Infrastructure in seaports (lectures + study visit) 1 day

• Port and terminal infrastructure• Factors contributing to the effectiveness

• International maritime conventions and legislation from seaports’ perspective

• Rights and obligations of port authorities

4. Seaports and maritime safety (lectures) 1 day

• Cargo and maritime safety at seaports

• ISPS• IMGD code• Safety culture and risk management

5. Seaports and the environment (lectures & case studies) 1 day

• Environmental impacts of maritime traffic, and port and terminal operations

• Environmental assessment, monitoring and management systems

• Case study examples

6. A tailored course based on the specific wishes of the client (0,5-1 days)

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

We offer diverse research services in the fields of maritime industries and logistics for public and private sector organizations.

We have taken part in several research projects both with academic institutes and private companies. Our researchers have experience both in applying for funding and in evaluating and exploiting research results. We are experienced leaders of international projects, e.g. Interreg and Twinnig projetcs.

In co-operation projects with private companies our main objective is to provide high quality services that are carried out according to the precise needs of the client. The results produced are always presented in such a way that the client can make use of them in the most effective manner.
