Description

The family of transmission infrared Moisture measurements all utilize selective absorption of infrared energy to determine the moisture content of a moving web. The measurement is based on the principle that water in the sheet absorbs specific infrared wavelengths. The wide range of basis weights that can be measured with these sensors, coupled with their speed and accuracy, make them an important part of advanced MD and CD Multivariable Controls available with Experion MX for process improvements beyond traditional systems.

Insensitivity to Sheet Scattering Power

The source emits broad-band infrared energy into the sheet gap, where it is widely scattered and reflected between diffuse reflecting plates located above and below the sheet. These INFRAND optics (named for INFinite, RANDom scattering) include a 50 mm machine-direction (MD) offset between source and detector assembly, which forces the source energy to make numerous passes through the sheet before being detected. The additional interaction of the source energy with the sheet increases absorption of measured wavelengths, providing greater signal and greater sensitivity than other optical designs. Machine-direction alignment of the source and detector provides excellent CD resolution and streak visibility without compromising sensitivity. In addition to the moisture and reference detectors that are offset from the source, a third detector is located directly opposite the source to provide information on the sheet’s scattering power. Integrating the scattering power measurement with moisture and reference measurements eliminates the effects of varying basis weight, refining, ash levels, carbon levels and coat weights. As a result, the moisture sensor is sensitive only to moisture, providing excellent accuracy.

High Stability and Sensitivity

Each detector assembly consists of an IR detector mounted on a two-stage, solid-state Peltier cooler. Peltier cooler control maintains the temperature of each detector at 0°C, providing 300% greater sensitivity than detector operation at ambient temperatures. Control of detector temperature to ± 0.005°C stabilizes sensitivity to 1 part in 10,000, ensuring extraordinary sensor stability. All detectors are phase-referenced to the

modulation frequency of the source, to ensure insensitivity to ambient infrared energy.

200 Hz Frequency Response

The source continuously emits broadband infrared energy into the sheet, modulated to eliminate sensitivity to ambient light. Energy that has interacted with the sheet and gets to the receiver is analyzed by all detectors simultaneously, enabling continuous measurement of all wavelengths from the same spot on the sheet. As a result, detector signals at any time contain all of the information necessary for accurate moisture measurement without any effects of paper formation. This signal processing strategy provides the fast sensor response that is critical for high resolution profile measurement at fast scanning speeds and for high-frequency process monitoring. Conventional sensors often use a single detector with multiple filters in a spinning wheel; filter wheel rotation and paper movement means measurement of each channel takes place at a different spot, resulting in formation-induced sampling error (noise) and slow overall sensor response.
