TheorySoponification: Cleavage of the esterbonds in a fat molecule by potasium hydroxide or

sodium hydroxide


Soap


Chemicals• 200g rapeseed oil


• Sodium chloride

• 200ml 25% sodium hydroxide (NaOH)

• 100ml distilled water


Materials• pot


• hot plate with magnetic stirrer


Method• The rapeseed oil and the distilled water are heated in the pot.



Method• The solution is stirred and we add the sodium hydroxide.



Method• The sodium chloride is added to our product.



Method• Finally the soap is seperated from water and glycerol. The soap can be pressed into shape now.

Chemicals• 100ml rapeseed oil


• 5 sodium hydroxide pellets

• 30ml methanol


Materials

• condenser for boiling under backflow


• hot plate with magnetic stirrer


Method• The chemicals are placed in the round bottomed flask.• Then we heat to the boil under backflow cooling.• The final step is to separate the resulting biodiesel from glycerol and water
