Experiment # 1: Measurement
The determination or estimation of magnitudes of quantities.
The process of obtaining the magnitude of a quantity, such as length or mass, relative to a unit of measurement, such as a meter or a kilogram.
Measurement Process
Objective
To learn the basic skills of measuring an object using some standard tools and methods.
Experiment Tools
•Vernier Caliper
•Micrometer
Caliper
It is an instrument used to measure linear dimensions ( length, depth,..).
Types of Calipers
Inside Caliper Outside Caliper
Divider Caliper Oddleg Caliper
Vernier Caliper
Dial Caliper
Digital Caliper
It can measure: •Internal dimensions, •External dimensions, and •Depth by the use of a probe.
Vernier Caliper
How does it work?
Instructions on Use
•Close the jaws lightly on the object to be measured.•If you are measuring something with a round cross section, make sure that the axis of the object is perpendicular to the caliper.•The boldface numbers on the fixed scale are centimeters.
Micrometer
•It is more accurate than the Vernier caliper.•It allows the measurer to have up to 0.0001 accuracy.
Types of Micrometer
Outside, inside and depth
