PETER SAYS When Lynda and I both turned 50 we thought we’d celebrate with an overseas trip. We had never been out of Australia, or even had a passport, but for such an important birthday we thought, “It’s time – it’s our turn”.

Going overseas for the first time meant we wanted a helping hand to guide us. Believe it or not, our son is a travel agent. He knew we wanted to do our dream trip in style and recommended Insight Vacations. Going for an optimum tour really pays off. All our hotels were brilliantly located, right in the centre of cities. In Paris our hotel was a gorgeous opulent oasis with chandeliers, just minutes from shopping and the Champs-Élysées.

Having an experienced Insight Tour Director made the trip for us, no question. Gary, who took us through England and Scotland, was just unbelievable; his knowledge was first-class, with fascinating cultural detail.

By the time we came back we were hooked. At this time of life you can spend on material things – or not. I don’t care if I drive my car for another 20 years! All I’m thinking is, when’s our next trip?

LYNDA SAYS As soon as we saw the European Grandeur trip in the brochure we knew that this was the big itinerary we were ready for. It’s such a long way to travel that we wanted to spend plenty of time there – and see all the great sights that we had marvelled at from a distance, like the Leaning Tower of Pisa and the Colosseum. We were amazed at how close the countries are; that we could wake up in London and go to bed in Paris that night. I thought Insight’s smaller groups were fantastic. Each coach carries just 40; the extra legroom really made a difference.

We would never have thought of visiting some places on our own. These gems ended up being some of our best memories; like wandering the cobblestone streets of the Italian village of Assisi and having a guided tour of Vienna’s Schönbrunn Palace.

NEXT WEEK Peter and Lynda go off the beaten track

LourdesThe candlelight service in Lourdes took my breath away. It was extremely moving to see so many nuns, priests and worshippers singing hymns, holding candles and touching the walls in this very spiritual, sacred village in France - LYNDA

Travel memoirs

LYNDA SAYSWe couldn’t wipe the smiles off our faces when we came home from our last Insight Vacations tour. So this year we linked three itineraries together for one big seven-week adventure. We did Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales, then something a bit different with the Northern Capitals and Russia before heading down to the Greek Islands.

We found the tours as much of a gourmet as a cultural experience and we were pretty courageous; we ate reindeer in Helsinki, haggis in Scotland and tried our first baklava, dripping with honey, in Greece. The adventures weren’t limited to the cuisine. After dinner we’d find ourselves ringside at the Moscow Circus, soaking up the buzz of island nightlife by meandering around Mykonos and watching traditional dancing and late night comedy in Ireland. I’ll never hear a better version of Van Morrison’s Brown Eyed Girl than our singalong in the pub over a few Baileys and Guinnesses. We almost knocked the rafters off the roof...

At home we have a huge wall with about 30 photos from each tour. We look at them and just go, wow, what a great time. We have taken all the memories with us; we smile when we walk past.

PETER SAYS We went to small, local restaurants in beautiful settings that were proud to cater for us and show off the local delicacies. We also had some of the best fun of the tour searching for treasures to take home. Our souvenir stash includes an Irish Waterford crystal vase, a music box from Russia, tartan mohair scarves and golf clubs from Scotland.

We had several Tour Directors this time who all gave a different flavour. Kerri-Anne took us through Stockholm, Copenhagen and Helsinki and was incredibly knowledgeable and nurturing. Russia, which we felt could have been a bit intimidating, was so easy with her excellent support and guidance.

We love the way Insight offers iconic destinations that we had always dreamed about – mixed in with unexpected places. Watching the sun go down on the whitewashed buildings and the blue domes of Santorini whilst overlooking the beautiful clear blue of the Aegean is a truly magnificent memory.

IrelandIreland is really about the people and that’s what the Insight itinerary allowed us to enjoy. We visited farms and horse studs where local ladies made scones and cakes for us, and were thrilled to see Vintage Crop, the Melbourne Cup winner, grazing away in happy retirement - LYNDA

TurkeyWe loved being surprised by some of the unexpected places our journeys took us – like the historic city streets of Vilnius in Lithuania or coming across an ancient site in Turkey that rivals the ruins of Pompeii - PETER

TRAVEL BUG Lynda and Peter spent seven weeks travelling this year, with more plans for next. Pictured in Copenhagen, Denmark.

EnglandWe travelled along the most glorious country lanes and secret pathways of the Lake District on our way back from Scotland. Coaches usually take the easy main roads, so we were lucky to see this picturesque little pocket of the world. Insight always goes that extra mile, in this case literally - LYNDA

A TASTE FOR TRAVELWhen we first started travelling, we needed the big picture so we could discover which cultures we loved and would revisit in more depth on our future travels. Paul and I chose an Insight Vacations European Panorama trip which covered more than 10 countries and since then have come back to travel with Insight again and again.

I have a background as a travel agent and we consider ourselves seasoned travellers – one of our trips was solo in Ireland and it didn’t compare to travelling with Insight. Travelling independently, it’s easy to miss the attractions that may not be as well-known and we’ve found it’s these that add such charm to Insight’s itineraries. Insight opens doors and take you places that you just wouldn’t find yourself – not to mention VIP access to popular attractions so you can dodge 2km queues.

One of our favourite trips was the Country Roads of France. Our Tour Director was a brilliant guide who made the region come alive with his local historical knowledge. We detoured off the main roads to explore rural villages where I practised my rusty school French. It was thrilling to finally see the Rhône River’s famous 13th-century Avignon bridge after singing Sur le Pont d’Avignon as a schoolgirl.

CLOSE TO THE HEARTAnother trip, the Country Roads of Scotland, had personal meaning: I wanted to see where my mother was born. It was amazing to walk through Glasgow, travel up to the Orkney Islands and the beautiful estuaries of Wick, venture into Loch Ness Monster territory and see the Edinburgh Tattoo – all of which I’d been hearing about it since I was a child.

Our Country Roads of Italy & Sicily tour had been a highlight during our earlier travels and we had never forgotten medieval Sienna’s gorgeous town square, where we ate nut cake and heard about the local car racing. When we returned we travelled down the boot of Italy, visiting hillside villages where big families and old men sat outside coffee shops with their chess boards, enjoying life.

Paul and I travel to absorb the culture of a new place, to learn the history and see the archaeological sites. Insight Vacations gives us those rich experiences and even more with optional extras offered by our Tour Directors. When the guide says, “If you’re going to do anything extra on the trip, do this...” we jump right in.

The Isle of SkyeThe largest and most beautiful island of the Inner Hebrides in Scotland, the Isle of Skye was a real higlight for us. I distinctly remember standing mesmerised on the dock in Portree watching the fisherman unload their haul of cod.

St Andrews Paul’s a mad golfer, so he loved visiting the historical St Andrews golf course in Scotland, which is one of the oldest and most prestigious courses in the world – it’s the Holy Grail of golf.

TRAVEL IN STYLE Paul and Elaine have spent more than 10 years travelling the world with Insight Vacations.

SicilyThe extremely beautiful town of Taormina, on a hill on the coast of Sicily, is an amazing place. A stand-out memory was eating delicious, to-die-for homemade Italian cannoli while visiting here.

TRAVELLING THE EAST COASTPaul and I were so happy with our European Insight Vacations experiences that we decided to explore the US on our next few trips. We chose the east coast because it’s such a pretty part of the country, embarking on the Coastal New England and Canada’s Maritime tour. It was always going to be hard to top the European experiences we’d had with Insight, but we knew from our first day in Boston that it would! Boston’s a fascinating city and the gateway to the coastal playground of Cape Cod and the eastern seaboard. Paul and I loved the maritime flavour; we made sure that we ate lobster as much as possible while we were there!

Our tour director on the Coastal New England tour was just delightful. We loved her quirky expressions like “we’re going to be in deep yoghurt”. Along the way she took us to Bangor, a fascinating little place that had an old milk bar from the 50’s with an original jukebox and ice-cream soda fountain. The town has stayed exactly the same, down to the old petrol pumps; the time warp really cast a spell.

ROCKING THE SOUTH Our most recent trips were Southern Elegance, covering the deep south of the east coast, and the Rhythms and Flavours journey which covers the mid-west to the southern part of the US. Both gave us a great chance to sample the sleepy, historical atmosphere and cuisine of the Old South. We saw how the rich and famous lived, from the magnificent dining room of Biltmore Estate, to the fascinating Jekyll Island Club Hotel, the playground of the Rockefellers and steel magnates who controlled America. We cruised down the banks of the Mississippi and visited the remote, heartland communities and small towns like Natchez, also touring the stately old houses that are ghosts of another era. We always felt looked-after travelling with Insight, even if there was a glitch. When the American Queen river cruise was overbooked, Insight negotiated on our behalf and we were upgraded to the amazing, luxurious Mark Twain suite. That’s why we always go back to Insight: they keep their promises – and exceed them.

Down in Nashville it’s all about country music. We spent hours in the Hall of Fame – but the music really lives in the streets and the bars, where people will ask you to dance. We stayed at the Nashville Hilton, slap bang in the middle of all the honky-tonks. We’ll never forget it. The amazing memories are the best part of Insight experiences. That’s why we keep going back – to make more.

Prince Edward IslandThe beauty of the island’s towns, house and gardens really brings the Anne of Green Gables books to life.

MemphisMemphis gave us the taste of Elvis and early rock ‘n’ roll. Sun Studios is the exact spot where Elvis auditioned and played his first record.

New OrleansDelicious prawns were cooked right in front of us on the Rhythms and Flavours tour.
