Combustion Method: Principle

• Combustion of solid samples within a ceramic

crucible in pure oxygen gas

• Entrapped total carbon and sulfur atoms leave

the sample and form gaseous compounds by

chemical reactions with oxygen

• CO2 and SO2 gas concentrations are analysed via

infrared method

Preheat crucibles

Burn ceramic crucibles at 1300 K for 2 h to remove all C impurities

Prepare sample

Make drillings, chips, etc., clean them with acetone and dry them

Weigh sample

Weigh clean and dry sample (1 g) into crucible and transfer weight to software

Add accelerator

Fill one scoop of accelerator (e.g. 1,5 g of W/Sn) into preheated ceramic crucibles

Analysis

Place the filled crucible into the autosampler and start the measurement
