Makaloa is a delicate wetland plant with slender, reed-like

leaves. Related to the Egyptian papyrus, the makaloa grows

nowhere other than Hawai‘i. In olden days, Hawaiians

would gather the longest leaves, dry them in the sun,

then weave them into household items featuring intricate

geometric designs.

with wide leaves and brilliant orange flowers. Early Hawaiians

Seasons program for ages five to twelve is
