Food is news the kind you can eat your way through (sort of). On this expedition,

youll munch your way through San Francisco while learning about -- and eating as

much as you can food issues. Nibble as you go, but ask go, but ask serious questions

about food safety, why a North Beach bakery keeps its 130-year-old ovens, and the

global trade in chocolates impact in faraway lands.

Description: You might choose to focus your food day around a factory tour of the

TCHO Factory at the end of Pier 17. The hour-long tour includes a guided tasting of

flavor-driven, artisan chocolate and covers the history of chocolate, TCHO training and

investments in cocoa farmers, and the manufacturing of New American Chocolate from

scratch on site. (http://www.tcho.com/tour/#sthash.OPJ0KqKi.dpuf). Follow Tcho with

visit at Global Exchange, a nonprofit that is celebrating its successful campaign to

pressure Hershey to commit to using 100-percent sustainably sourced cocoa. Youll

need to find your way to the heart of the Mission (16th and Mission) to find them, but

theyll be expecting you. Heres more about the Global Exchange effort: http://

What you need to plan: In addition to the Tcho factory and the Global Exchange

office, where else would you like to visit? Ghirardelli Square no longer has its own

chocolate factory, but its still a great place to buy chocolate and talk to people who eat

it. Other options: Visit the morning farmers market at UN Plaza. How about sampling

olive oils and coffee beans and watching Italian bakers kneading bread in North Beach?

What of China towns bustling fish market? Its fortune cookie factory? Fishermans

wharf fish market? Contacting the folks at the Chronicles award-winning food blog,

Inside Scoop or maybe food editor Miriam Morgan, nominated by the Association of

Food Journalists for this years Best Newspaper Food Coverage. And, yes, make a point

of stopping every where you can to eat the citys finest chocolate.
