Description: San Francisco is synonymous with gay rights, and for good reason: It was the firscity to legalize gay marriage, in 2004, and this week may well see a landmark decision from theSupreme Court on the Proposition 8 case, legalizing marriage again in San Francisco and possiblthe nation. For this field trip, youll be exposed to several areas in San Francisco where LGBThistory was made and visit the Bay Area Reporter, the nations oldest LGBT newspaper.

Start with a pre-arranged 10 a.m. tour of City Hall by longtime head docent Ellen Schumer, whowill do a 45-minute tour including the Rotunda, the site of the first same-sex marriages in 2004,and the bust of Harvey Milk, the city's first gay supervisor, who was assassinated in the 1970s.Ellen knew Milk and she has had a lot of articles written about her (do some research atsfgate.com).

Afterwards, we suggest you take a bus or trolley ride (on MUNI's historic streetcars) downMarket Street and visit the Castro and the GLBT Museum (opens at 11 a.m.), where you cantour the "Our Vast Queer Past" exhibit and (we think) talk to people about the Supreme Courtdecision on same-sex marriage, expected to be handed down on Monday of this week orThursday, the day after you visit. Other exhibits focus on gays in the military, HIV/AIDS and thehidden economic power of gay consumers. (Note: This is a great time to do man-on-streetinterviews along Market and Castro before you hit the museum).

From the museum, head back uptown to Yerba Buena Park or another San Francisco greenspace to have lunch. This is open time (find something to do).

Finally, head to the Bay Area Reporter for a pre-arranged 4 p.m. visit with Matthew Bajko, assistant editor, who will talk about the annual Gay Pride issue, which goes to press at 3 p.m.that day in preparation for the annual Gay Pride Parade on Sunday 6/30 (too bad, you'll begone!). Matthew can talk about covering sensitive stories, Prop 8 and the everyday challenge offinding stories that his readers need to read where to buy stuff, how to travel as a gay man/woman, tips for becoming an adoptive parent, etc.

What youll get: CalTrain and MUNI tickets (2 rides per student) plus boxed lunch. Moneyfor tickets to the GLBT Museum and 20 copies of the Bay Area Reporternewspaper (see Beatricor Paul). Also, see Kelsey to arrange a popcorn+movie screening of Milk, the biopic about SanFrancisco supervisor Harvey Milk, starring Sean Penn.

What you need to plan: Your open time above. And, if you dont want to visit the museum, find another stop that fits into your theme.
