Description: While many U.S. cities have Chinatowns, only one has Angel

Island the place where emigrants from China during the 1880s were

detained, sometimes for years, until they were allowed to complete their

journeys in San Francisco. Many thousands of immigrants passed through Angel

Island on their way to Chinatown and the walls of the barracks they inhabited

tell their story, with poems carved into the soft wood, and exhibits that highlighthe vast distances and incredible challenges that immigrants overcame. Angel

Island underwent a $20 million renovation several years ago and there is not

only a museum but an infirmary, boat dock and other areas to visit. This trip

exposes you to a healthy, vibrant, thriving Chinatown that is the legacy of those

who landed, stayed and sometimes died on Angel Island.

For this trip, youll take a boat ride to the island; visiting the immigration station

requires an easy-to-moderate one-mile walk from the boat dock to the

museum, including incredible views of San Francisco. At some point (before or

after) youll take a bus or walk from the CalTrain station to Chinatown (the

official entrance and big gold dragon are at Grant and Bush streets).

What youll get: CalTrain and MUNI tickets (2 rides per student) plus boxed

lunch. Ferry tickets to Angel Island and to the Immigration Station Museum.

What you need to plan: How and when you visit Chinatown (before or

after the island). Chinatown is big and incredible and its possible to just go there

and soak up the street scenes, but there are also museums and self-guided

walking tours that you can find on the web do some digging. Youll also need

to plan your boat trip to Angel Island and work with Paul/Beatrice in advance to

    get tickets.
