3.The BellowsThe bellows is the basic element of expansion joint, which can be made by
mechanical and hydraulic forming as the requirement in MEGAFLEXON facility. The mechanical forming, which is also known as roll forming, involves passing
the tube through progressively deeper convoluted mandrels and gradually andcause realy fatigue failure by friction due to the concentration of local hardness.MEGAFLEXON can produce up to 8,000mm size as per the requirement.
The hydraulic forming is a method in which forming tube is slowlycompressed with low hydraulic pressure towards the inside after placingrestraining rings around the forming tube and sealing both ends, andsubsequently it leads to producing far better qualitive product than the
9
EXPANSION JOINT & FLEXIBLE PRODUCT
mechanical forming does as it gives uniform hardening all over the world. Inthis method, MEGAFLEXON can produce up to 1,500 mm in nominal diameter.
All bellows are formed in their cold state without heat treatment but it can beheat treated, in case that specially required.
The physical capacity of bellows to absorb movement is determined by thenumber of corrugations, height (H), pipe diameter (D), spacing (L), radius (r),thickness of material (t), and number of layers (n).
The basic constituent element of expansion joint, bellows, can be specified, considering on movement, pressure, temperature, service life and corrosionrate required.
Our standard material for the circular type bellows is austentic steel, that is, AISI304 and 316. In addition, other special Nickel based alloy material, like as Inconel,Incoloy, Monel and Hasteloy, can be applied on the servicing of agressive fluid.
The below can be helpful for yourconsideration on bellows and othermain part material of expansionjoint for the selection as per thespecification required.
Basically, austenitic steel is resi-stant to both high temperature anda agressive media. It has a goodmechanical properties as well whenit comes to the effect of continuousmotion in axial, lateral and angulardirection.
MEGAFLEXON bellows have been improved to achieve an optimizedrelationship between the various parameters, so that the bellows can withstandthe greatest possible load without fail on normal operating condition.
Basically, we carefully consider following criteria in designing bellows.
a) The geometrically stable state in a hydro test pressure of 1.5 times designpressure.
b) The stability for a hydro-test pressure of 1.5 x design pressure at leastwithout permanent changes in shape of leaks develops.
c) The reliable warranty service life of at least 7,000 cycles with nominal
10
movements and design pressure.d) Calculation for bellows designs are carried out to be in accordance with
EJMA (Standard of the Expansion Joint Manufacturers Association) Ⅴ. Ⅵ. Ⅶ Edition.
It is essential that the weld in the bellows be as strong as the surroundingmaterial.
Welding is done by qualified welders using machines specially built for thepurpose. Welds comply with every metallugical requirement with regard todurability and strength, documented by the certified procedure test.
4.The thermal expansion of pipeThe extent of expansion depends on the temperature difference, the expansion
coefficient and the length of the pipe. The expansion coefficient varies from onematerial to another and is also dependent on the temperature, as it increase asthe temperature rises.
The coefficient list, graphical chart and calculation example are shown on theReference Data. H.
5.Installation instruction for MEGAFLEXON axial expansion joints. Pipe laying
On installing pipelines, care should be taken that the pipe is laid in a straightline. Fixing points should be located in such a way that the pipe expandscorrectly in relation to the type of expansion joint chosen.
5.1 GuideEspecially, to operate the expansion joint effectively and positively, a guide
pipe which slides smoothly with less friction should be provided between thefixing point and the expansion joint. The distance between the expansion jointand the guide adjacent therto should be determined to be L1, L2 shown in fig.
5.2 Guide bearingsGuide bearing, which protect the pipe-work against bending in all directions,
should be of the slide or roller type. Pendent suspension is not recommended.Only one axial expansion joint may be fitted between 2 fixing points. Guidebearing should be placed at the maximum intervals.
11
EXPANSION JOINT & FLEXIBLE PRODUCT
5.3 Fixing points, or main anchorPipelines in which expansion joints are to be installed should be secured with
fixing points. The fixing points must be sturdly enough to absorb the forcesoriginating from the expansion joint and the frictional resistance of the guidebearing.
That is, stress on the main fixing point Fh is composed of the resulting forcescoming from;
a) The spring constant Ca, which is the force it takes to move the bellows1 mm axially or laterally. Since the spring constant is a theoretical cal-culation, a deviation of +- 30% from the values specified on the data sheets must be expected.
b) Tensile stress from the highest operating pressure of P bar affecting theactive area Ab mm2 of the bellows.

c) The inherent resistance of the expansion joint, which is the product of thespring constant kgf/mm and the expansion for the section of pipe.
d) Addition for friction force from guides between two fixing points.
Stress on intermediate fixing points Fm is calculated as the sum of the abovestresses b) and c), since tensile stress for the same pipe dimension is entirelyabsorbed by Fh.
5.4 Pre-stressingMEGAFLEXON standard expansion joints are dimensioned to absorb +/-
movements from the neutral position of the bellows, with half being absorbedby each: +/- 20 mm = 40 mm total movement, +/- 7 Deg. = 14 Deg. totalmovement. It is possible to pre-stress the expansion joint in order to make fulluse of the working range of the bellows. If calculation show that a totalmovement of 30 mm should be used, it is possible to use to advantage an ex-pansion joint with +/- 15 mm movement which has been half percentprestressed to = 30mm instead of an expansion joint with +/- 30mm movement. It should be noted, however, that it is not wrong to use an expansion joint witha movement of +/- 30mm.
The following parameters should be taken into account when verifying pre-stressing.
1) The overall dimensions at installation temperature2) The neutral length of the expansion joint before prestressing3) The total movement of the expansion4) The highest operating temperature to occur5) The lowest operating temperature to occur6) The installation temperature
It is very important that the expansion joint is installed in its optimumposition, as this will produce the best combination of movement and service lifein the bellows.

6.Method of SettingPlease take NOTE of the following matters with respect to the operation of
expansion joint.
6.1 Removal of set boltExpansion joint is provided with a set bolt or set bar that is painted yellows
and used for adjusting dimension. Always remove this set bolt after piping incompleted.
6.2 Inhibition of gas cutting of set boltAlways use wrench for removing the set bolt.
Absolutely avoid gas cutting since if frequently may damage bellows.
6.3 Protecting from welding sparkDo not allow welding spark and grinder spark to come into direct contact
with bellows. Always cover the bellows when you carry out these operationsnear the expansion joint.
6.4 Prohibition of arc in continuity testAbsolutely avoid the contact of electrode and earth wire with bellows in the
continuity test.
6.5 Direction of flowGenerally, the direction of flow is defined. Mount the joint in the direction of
arrow. Take care where the direction of flow is not restricted, as is the case ofhinged type, universal type, etc.
6.6 Direction of mounting hinged typeParticularly in the hinged type, hinge arm is mounted on both side of bellows.
Hence, mount the hinge arm parallel to the direction of expansion andcontraction.
6.7 PresetGenerally the expansion joint is set, taking the mounting temperature into
consideration. Please contact us when the application and the temperature areremarkably different form those set.
6.8 Use caution with sea waterTake care of installation site and maintenance since, particularly, STS-304 is
easily affected by sea water (Cl ion). Contact us before you install it for seawater piping.

Pressure Resistent Strength
The capability of a bellows to resist pressure is measured primarily by hoop stressor S2 from the standards of the EJMA. Basically S2 is the stress which runscircumferencially around bellows due to the pressure difference between the insideand the outside of the bellows. Also, the ability to carry pressure is also limited bymeridional bending stress, or bulge stress, S4 which runs longitudinal to thebellows side wall and it is a measure of the tendency of the bellow's convolution tobecome less U-shaped and more spherical due to residual stress originated from thebellows forming procedure.

EXPANSION JOINT & FLEXIBLE PRODUCT
MEGAFLEXON standard axial expansion joint are available in types MAXW, with
weld ends, and MAXF with flanges. Axial Expansion joints are used in pipeline systems for absorption of movements
along the longitudinal axis of the pipeline.MEGAFLEXON standard axial expansion joints are to be installed so that there is
only 1 expansion joint between each fixing point. Pipeline systems where axialexpansion joints are used must be protected against sideways bending. This is doneby fitting guide types.
a) Advantage-Simple way to absorb thermal growth on pipe-work as per the temperaturevariation-The flow direction unchanged-The efficient way to save installation space
b) Disadvantage-The solid fix point required -The good sliding bearing required for the movement axially-A lot of fix points is required on a long pipe run
A-1, Single Joints, Free TypeGenerally, the ends on both side can be fabricated as not only a fixed flange end or
free type, but also butt weld end.
ApplicationThis type of expansion joints is well fitted with low pressure gas pipe, exhaust pipe, duct, flue, etc, for the purpose of absorbing thermal growth and contraction, orpreventing vibration in exhaust pipe of engine, blower, inlet and outlet of pump, andso on. Applicable pressure rating : max. 20 kgf/cm2-full vacuum
A-2, Reinforced expansion joint(Control Ring Type)Normally, the reinforcing, or equalizing ring, is installed on the convolution root ofbellows to reinforce the bellows against a high internal pressure.
MEGAFLEXON standard material for control ring : GC 20, SS400-maximum service pressure : 40kgf/cm2
-maximum service temperature : 300 Deg.C-test pressure : 1.5 x maximum service pressure

EXPANSION JOINT & FLEXIBLE PRODUCT
MEGAFLEXON standard lateral expansion joints are available in two designs. The light design, type MLW, MLF, has tie rods which are secured to the flangesby means of nuts and a specially designed spherical disk, allowing angularmovement between bolt and flange.
The number of tie rods is dependent on diameter and pressure.MEGAFLEXON standard lateral expansion joint with tie rods is available in adesign with single or double tie rods.
The design with tie rods can only be used within a limited pressure range anda temperature range(max. 400 Deg. C).
The heavy-duty design, type LA3, LA4(fig2) has flat iron hinges which arefitted through the flanges and welded onto them on the outside. A hinge, which allows lateral movements, is mounted on the fitting above the center lineof the bellows. MEGAFLEXON standard lateral expansion joint with hinges isavailable as well in a design with a double bellows.
Common to both models is the fact that tie rods and hinges alike have the taskof absorbing the thrust forces arising from the operating pressure. The tie rodsand hinges make axial expansion impossible.
This means that a lateral expansion joint can only move sideways(laterally) onone or more planes, making it possible for those movements which areperpendicular to the longitudinal direction to be absorbed. Lateral expansionjoints are therefore ideal for installation in pipe systems with bends.
a) Advantage-Absorb thermal growth in all direction in one plane-A largely reduced load on fix point
b)Disadvantage-The changed flow direction

EXPANSION JOINT & FLEXIBLE PRODUCT
MEGAFLEXON standard angular expansion joints are available in two types.
Angular expansion joint type MANW & MANF is designed with flat steel fittingswhich are fitted through the flanges and welded onto them on the outside.
A cylindrical bolt, which allows angular movement in several planes, above centerline of the bellows.
The expansion joint is made with 1 bellows. The MEGAFLEXON expansion jointtype MANW is fitted with flat iron fittings which are fitted through the flanges andwelded onto them on the outside.
The fittings are secured to a middle ring with cylindrical bolts, which allowangular movement in several planes, above the center line of the bellows. The expansion joint is made with a single bellows.
Common to both types is the fact that the fittings have the task of absorbing thetensile forces arising from the operating pressure. The fitting make axial expansions impossible, which means that the expansion jointcan only absorb bending forces.
Angular expansion joints are suitable for installations where it is not possible tocreate sturdy fixing points, and in pipe systems where bending occurs.
Since the angular expansion joints can only absorb bending, at least, 2 or 3 angularexpansion joints are required everytime to ensure correct absorption of themovements.
Two angular expansion joints correspond functionally to one lateral expansionjoint, for which reason angular expansion joints are often used in pairs.
a)Advantage-Absorb a relatively large movement by means of combination of this type ofexpansion joint-A largely reduced load on fix point
b)Disadvantage-The change of flow direction-Relatively large space required on designing and installation

single Type
MEGAFLEXON double hinged expansion joints have two bellows seperated by acenter spool pipe to absorb a large lateral movements.
The ability to resist pressure thrust is provided by a hinge assembly at eachbellows, which also permits angular movement in a single plane.
Unlike the tied lateral expansion joint, the thermal expansion of the entireexpansion joint is applied to the piping.

EXPANSION JOINT & FLEXIBLE PRODUCT
This type of expansion joint has similar structure with a hinged expansion jointsand is designed to permit angular rotation in any plane by the use of two pairs ofhinges affixed to a common floating gimbal ring. Normally, the thermal growthfrom two different directions on two planes are absorbed by two pair of this typeexpansion joints, that is, the double gimbal type expansion joint.
In disigning, the thrust of the expansion joint, which is developed from internalpressure and extraneous force, should be carefully considered to be retained by thehardware, including gimbal ring, hinges and pins.
MEGAFLEXON Double Gimbal Expansion Joint are similar to the hingeduniversal except that the two joints are gimbal type. The advantage of thisarrangement is the ability to absorb a large lateral movement in any plane at eachend. Because the gimbals are attached to each end of the bellows, the thermalexpansion of the intermediate pipe will not be absorbed by the universal but mustbe accepted by the adjacent pipeing.

EXPANSION JOINT & FLEXIBLE PRODUCT
Generally, the fix point is required to use the bellow type expansion joint forthe purpose of withstanding against thrust force but it become sometimesdifficult to install fix point in case of a relatively large diameter and highpressure.
The MEGAFLEXON various type of pressure balanced expansion joint, L, S, T-type, can be designed on the above condition on pipe-work and the installa-tion cost of fix point could be saved. The major advantage of pressure balanceddesign is its ability to absorb externally imposed axial movement withoutimposing pressure loading on the system. But, the force resulting from thebellows spring rate is not eliminated.
Since the force to move the bellow are generally of a low order of magnitude, these are usually not objectionable, except in case involving extremely lightequipment with close clearance moving parts which might be affected by smallforce.
The pressure balanced expansion joint is used to relieve loads on equipmentsuch as pumps, compressors and turbines.
The pressure balanced expansion joint will be negligible when compared tothe cost of additional equipment, piping and building space which would benecessary for safe functioning of the equipment without the expansion joint.
Service pressure :full vacuum-20kgf/cm2
1)L-style(Bent pipe balanced)
2)S-style(Straight pipe balanced)
3)T-style(Straight pipe balanced)
This type of expansion joint is specially designed to protect theunderground pipe-work by absorbing the unbalanced ground settlement andan undesired fluctuation from earthquake. Especially, the soil pressure isconsidered on designing the external cover, which has special structure to avoidsoil penetration.
Service pressure : up to 20kgf/cm2

EXPANSION JOINT & FLEXIBLE PRODUCT
1.1 MEGAFLEXON provides metal rectangular expansion joints subjected toaxial, lateral, angular movements, or any combinstion of these as the same withthe metallic circular expansion joint.
To complete this expansion joint in designing, the bellows are to be designedin accordance with the bellows performance equations defined in clause C-8 inthe current EJMA edition, Expansion joint Manufacturer Association.
1.2 MEGAFLEXON can supply single mitered corner, double mitered corner, camera corner and round corner in case that especially specified
1.2.1 Single Mitered Corner Construction
① Fitted with high convolution profiles.② Maximum amount of movement possible
for or given convolution profile.③ Lowest cost.
1.2.2 Double Mitered Corner Construction① Fitted which high convolution profile.② Maximum amount of movement possi-
ble for a given convolution profile.③ Low cost.If a corner preference is not specified, MEGA
FLEXON would design the double miteredcorner configuration in corner construction(fig 2 Double Mitered Corner)
1.2.3 Camera corner① Low cost② All corner seam welding to be performed
on the outside of the corner in a easilyaccessable area.
③ Disadvantage : deep crevices at thecorner, a reduction in movement availa-ble for a given profile and convolutioncount because the convolutions are over-lapped at the corner.

G. METALLIC RECTANGULAR EXPANSION JOINT
66
MEGAFLEXON does not recommand this shape of expansion joint but willprovide if specified. (fig 3. Camera Corner)
1.2.4 Round cornerMEGAFLEXON can supply the round
corner design as well because this design hasa advantage in the technical view point.
That is, this design results in the lowestcorner stress if sit up and welding of thecorner seams are carefully controlled.
MEGAFLEXON is producing 60mm highconvolution profile as standand unlessspecified.
1.3 MiscellaneousCoverInternal sleeveHingeSlotted hingesInternal packingInsulation support
1.3.1 CoverApplication : -To avoid accidental damage to the bellows while shipment, installation or operation. -To protect the bellows from weld splatter,or other metal work
1.3.2 internal sleeveApplication-Flow velocity is the above of 7~10m/secand fluid is abrasive.
AdvantageIn high temperature operation, or rapid
variation of temperature, the air barrier maybe formed on space between bellows and liner and the rapid increasement ofskin temp. on bellows can be avoided, which result in the reduction ofcircumferential stresses in the bellows. That cause buckling or rapid fatiguefailure of the bellows.

EXPANSION JOINT & FLEXIBLE PRODUCT
1.3.3 internal packingApplication-The protection against thermal shock andcracking occured in case that the rectan-gular expansion joint is subjected to therapid temperature range. Normally, thepacking reduce the skin temperature ofbellows while operation.-In the coal-fired boiler flue gas line, thepacking acts like fillter to avoid fly ashfrom accumulating in the bellows convo-lution. The fly ash filled can affect severe chemical attack and immobilization ofbellows motion.
1.3.4 Hinges and slotted hingesApplication -As the support for the weight of the ductingbetween two single expansion joints-As the controller suitable for axial and lateraloffset in universal type expansion joint.
1.3.5 insulation supportOn outer insulation, it is often specified for
the support of insulation material.
1.4 MaterialMEGAFLEXON use following material on bellows fabrication(ASTM)
A240 T304, A240 T304LA240 T316, A240 T316LA240 T321, B168 Alloy600A606(corten)
A36, or A387 Gr 12 would be applied on flange, internal sleeve and inter-mediate duct pipe if required.
1.5 Quality assurance
1.5.1 All welding shall comply with ASME section Ⅸ,latest edition.
1.5.2 All dimensional tolerance shall be in compliance with EJMA section D-2.
68
1.5.3 Quality assurance system is currently maintained according to ASMEcode section Ⅷ
1.5.4 If the leak-test specified on ASME B31.3 is not available due to dimension, the air jet leak examination shall be applied, which is specified on D-3 sectionin EJMA latest edition.
1.6 Design Standard
1.7 Shipment-The expansion joint shall be prepared for shipment in such a manner that thequality, cleanliness and finish shall be maintained during shipment.
-Shipping bar shall be equipped to maintain proper shipping length andalignment and shipping bars shall be painted yellow
-Each expansion joint shall be tagged with recommended installationinstruction
-MEGAFLEXON provide lifting lugs in case that expansion joint weighing more than 200kgf. If more than one lug is furnished, each lug shall be designed to carry the entire weight of the assembly.
