Chem 1CL Spring ‘12 TA: Niva Ran
Experiment 16: Synthesis of Alum
Author: _____________________________ Lab Partner:____________________________
Pre-Lab: (3 pts) _________ Name, Date, Title, Introduction, Pre-Lab Questions
TA signature (initials) required
Data: (3 pts) _________ Original data from your lab notebook must be stapled onto your lab report
Mass of Aluminum Foil
Mass of Alum product
Observations for BaCl2 test, KOH test, Flame test, and Water test
Include balanced equations for net ionic reactions
Calculations: (2 pts) _________
Alum theoretical yield
Alum percent yield
Discussion: (9 pts) Most Important Section - Must be Typed _________
1 – 1 ½ pages in length (Be articulate and succinct) - 12 pt font, standard margins
Use only your own words: Start with a brief introduction to the material studied and why this
experiment is of interest; explain how the objectives of the experiment were accomplished
Discuss specific results (your results)
Include balanced equations for reactions to synthesize alum (each equation must be on a
separate line but in context with your discussion).
Discuss your results for the theoretical and percent yield of alum
(explain why percent yield is greater or less than 100%)
Discuss results for the KOH and BaCl2 test, include net ionic reactions (on separate lines)
Discuss results for the flame and the water test
Discuss possible sources of error and how the error affects your results as you analyze your
results
Review Questions: (3 pts) _________ Clearly show your calculations and put a box around each answer.
Neatness: Every page present, Name/Date/Exp.# each page, Writing is legible
No scribbles, no whiteout - draw a single line through mistakes
Sections Organized/Labeled, Final answer for each question is boxed
Report stabled with rubric as cover page before you come into lab
NOTE: After you complete the lab this week, write the Lab Report and turn it in. Your alum crystals
will continue to grow over the next two weeks. You will discuss the results of your crystals in a
separate paragraph when you turn in your lab report for Exp. 17.
Staple this page to your lab report.
TOTAL: (20 max) _________
