Ifyouorsomeoneyouknowisexperiencingasleepdisorder,theSleepDisordersCenteratPutnamHospitalCenterisreadytohelp.FullyaccreditedbytheAmericanAcademyofSleepMedicine,theSleepDisordersCenter’smult idiscipl inaryteamofsleepmedicinespecialistsandconsultantsinpulmonarymedicine,otolaryngology,dentistry,neurologyandpsychologyevaluatespatientswithavarietyofsleepcomplaintsanddisorders,including:
• Insomnia
• Sleep Apnea
• Narcolepsy
• Excessive Sleepiness
• Parasomnias
• Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS)
• REM Sleep Behavior Disorder
Onceasleep-relatedproblemisidentified,thecenter’ssleepspecialistsdesigneachpatient’sevaluationprotocols.Asleepstudy,alsocalledpolysomnography(PSG),istheprincipalmeansofbothdiagnosingsleepdisordersanddeterminingtheeffectivenessoftreatment.
Mostpatientsareevaluatedduringnormalsleepinghours.Duringyourstudy,yourbreathingpatterns,brainwaves,muscleactivity,oxygenlevelsandheartrhythmswillbemonitoredusingelectrodesthatwillbeattachedtoyourhead,chest,legsandvariouspartsofyourbody.Thereisnopainorphysicaldiscomfortassociatedwiththesetests.Youwillbeaskedtosleepasifyouwereathome,eventhoughyouwillconstantlybeevaluated.
Afterthediagnosishasbeenestablished,treatmentofsleepdisordersistailored toeachpatientandcanincludebehaviormodification,medication,surgeryortheuseofdeviceswhichopentheupperairwaysandassistbreathing.
Areferralfromapatient’sprimarycarephysicianisrequiredforevaluationattheSleepDisordersCenter.Initialoffice visitsandanyfollow-upcarearegenerallycoveredunderhealthorinsuranceplans.Thecenter’sstaffwillbegladtoassistyouindeterminingyourinsurancecoverageandwillhelpyouobtainthenecessarypriorapprovals,ifrequired.660 Stoneleigh Avenue, Carmel, NY 10512
