TOURING PROGRAMEXHIBITION2013 - 2014

The Exhibition Touring Program is devoted to curating, supporting and touring high-quality visual art and exhibition product. Our exhibitions are designed to appeal to a range of regional audiences and occasions, and are ideal for a variety of large and small traditional and non-‘art’ spaces.

Our exhibitions are supported by easy instructions, tour and media kits, didactics, ideas and materials for public programming. We love to chat to regional venues about ‘value-adding’ your exhibition hire by seeking extra funding or community support for example, by hosting one of our artists in residence with your exhibition, or attaching an exhibition hire to an event in your region at a particular time – festival, rodeo, travelling circus, school of the air visit… the possibilities are endless!

We represent professional and emerging artists and collectives from regional Queensland, often in collaboration with other exhibition development partners such as regional galleries or art centres. We take great pride in giving our exhibitors and their communities exposure through our exhibition touring circuits, via extensive print and online marketing and by creating opportunities for personal appearances.

Our business is touring exhibition product from regional Queensland to regional Queensland (and into north NSW).

For more information and images from each of the shows go to artslinkqld.com.au or www.facebook.com/artslinkqueensland

Once again, an array of tasty visual experiences are on offer, including five NEW exhibitions as well as the smorgasbord of our continuing favorites.

and our sad times; the richness of the subject matter and range of historic periods take the viewer on an extraordinary journey.

Beginning in regional southern Queensland, the story captures life in the early settlements, gradually showing how people, time and technology evolve through their legacies – the breath-taking story of this growth and change moves beyond an initial regional focus to the re-presentation of images from the larger world.

DICHOTOMY OF PLACE

This exhibition showcases significant landmarks and ‘evolving’ vistas from around the artists’ homelands in coastal and rural Central Queensland. These artworks reflect upon the new ‘layers’ - mining, development - being constantly added to the natural landscape across regional Queensland. Dichotomy of Place invites audiences to contemplate the artworks as windows into this changing landscape.

These paintings are panoramic and contemplative, a feast of life and colour – the viewer can almost feel the humidity, hear the wind in the palm trees and smell the salty air. A short film featuring the two artists exploring their environment, artistic collaboration and creative processes also accompanies these exquisite offerings.

PAINTINGiNASATHE ADVENTURES OF TWO LITTLE ASTRONAUTS (AND A MYSTERIOUS THIRD CHARACTER)…

This exhibition represents a suite of thirty quirky stories, a set of episodes in a long tall tale about contemporary civilisation and life, described as ‘vaguely autobiographical’ by Sunshine Coast painter David Howard. The term ‘NASA’ acts a metaphor for Western culture.

Each work is in itself a complete mini-narrative. A space-suited pair face ‘change’ together; become tribal and endangered; entangled, scared and lost; float about and fall in love in a vibrant ‘real and imagined’ landscape, under the gaze of an intriguing third figure.

This set of paintings represents a visual and intellectual smorgasbord, combining striking graphics and complex personal iconography whilst directly referencing other artists, popular culture and recent history.

Its subject matter is lovingly rendered with deep texture, animated composition with the sensuously luminous and colourful black-rimmed quality of stained glass.

LAND AND SEATHE COUNTRY NEAR TOWNSVILLE WAS TRADITIONALLY A VERY POPULAR CAMPING SPOT … PLENTY OF FOOD AND FRESH WATER

Land and Sea is a collection of monoprints created by Murris in Ink printmakers, five artists who live and work in the Townsville region of North Queensland. For thousands of years, this country has been a healing place for Aboriginal people and the Murris in Ink artists intend for this exhibition to celebrate this theme. This series of works on paper tells of the land and sea, the animals, plants and people from the region, as well as offering stories from the artists’ traditional countries in other parts of mainland Queensland and the Torres Strait Islands.

Through the stories revealed in their artwork, the Murris in Ink artists aim to honour that custodianship and continue teaching about the land and sea to future generations. This exhibition provides links between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders traditions, experiences and knowledge. The traditional owners of the region, the Bindal and the Wulgurukaba people, have known about the life-sustaining treasures for thousands of years.

The country surrounding Townsville has historically been a place where people were welcome to gather and food was abundant in the rivers and ocean. A sense of plenty, expansiveness and healing has been incorporated into these monoprints with the use of imagery such as bush medicine and healthy bush foods. In addition, the imagery of the spirits of this place link the past with future generations.

TEASING THE DOMESTIC MIXED MEDIA

TAKE A WALK ON THE WOOLLY SIDE…

Teasing the Domestic proposes a toast to both the hand-made and the home-made, with a strong cup of tea, a hot twist of irony and a cheeky grin.

This gala display celebrates many things; the continuing transmission of heritage textile skills across generations of women; the sheer indulgence of padded pink decoration; the evolving and subversion of traditional forms; chores and anti-chores; tea and chat and family; midnight yarn-bombing and the simple joy of crazy crafted critters.

The exhibition features Sunshine Coast artists Kim Schoenberger and Corrie Wright as well as Kelly-Marie McEwan from Toowoomba. The selection of marvellous entries from the 2010 and 2012 World Tea Cosy Competition, a biennial charity event co-ordinated by Miles Regional Arts Council, come from urban and rural Queensland, interstate and overseas.

A significant number of the works in this exhibition are ‘stand-alone’, able to be displayed free-standing on tables or plinths (table-linens are supplied) independent from wall hanging systems – perfect for a foyer or library space for example. The exhibition is accompanied by, amongst other cosy kitchen and crafty resources, a children’s tea party area.

Proudly supporting Cancer Council’s Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea.

OBJECTS AND MEMENTOS

Donna Davis explores the narrative between individuals and their objects, presenting ten distinct individuals in ‘portrait’; not with faces but with images of their objects and mementos offered for the artist, re-mastered in photographs slick with digital artistry.

This contemporary look at portraiture provides an intimate glimpse into the lives of the sitters – allowing the viewer to reflect on the objects themselves in order to construct an image of the person depicted. Donna skilfully celebrates her subjects in intricate and individually-considered ‘framings’ of her own design.

Objects and Mementos resonates with unique stories and the evidence of their careful collection as markers to humanity; capturing a sense of the unique tapestry

of characters which make up many Queensland communities.

The experience will inspire every viewer to reflect upon their own objects and mementos and their own stories.

The images in Reeds Talking, Mountains Walking emerge for our viewing pleasure from the artist’s book of the same title which accompanies the exhibition. Each chapter articulates a different habitat - Beach, Dunes, Headlands, Heaths, Mangroves, Mountaintops, Waterways and Woodlands.

Interpreted through photographic capture and a personal philosophy that embraces both science and a dedicated spirituality, Lin traces the landscapes around her home on the Sunshine Coast with art.

To quote the artist, she spends a lot of time ‘poking around’ and studying the wild places of the world and records “…fleeting, ephemeral moments of change in the natural world”.

The photographic essays are elegant meditations on our embedding in this web of life, intricate beyond imaging – a peaceful celebration of life.

RE-TUNING THE GOANNA

As time and technology marches on, the old piano becomes neglected and forgotten. Re-tuning the Goanna celebrates this decline by presenting an exhibition of finely-crafted sculptures and panels of high-relief that re-work both the found materials and the found forms of musical instruments.

Noel deconstructs the proverbial piano for example, re-combining individual repeated parts with other found objects to make a series of sinuous wooden collages that burst with energy and fluid line.Re-tuning the Goanna also features a selection of instrument-inspired wooden carvings - glowing curves of precious woods combine with rustic materials - weathered fence palings, rusty nails and scrap metal.

This exhibition is a wonderful offering from a master of wood and a lover of form.

SCULPTURE MURRIS IN INK

Murris In Ink is a collective of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island printmakers who live and work in the Townsville region. The artists began printmaking workshops at Umbrella Studio in 2008 and gained recognition for their exhibits at the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair. Their works are now held in collections across the nation.

This exhibition celebrates the symbiotic themes of food and water; Ngapa meaning water in Walmajarri language from the Kimberley; Kai Kai a universal term in the Torres Strait community for food.

In preparation for this exhibition seven indigenous artists collaborated with master printer Ron McBurnie. The remarkable quality of the prints reflects their commitment to excellence and showcases exceptional aesthetic and carving skills, knowledge and celebration of stories and a passion for world-class printmaking.

IDEAS FOR ‘VALUE-ADDING’ YOUR EXHIBITON HIRE

Did you know that most of these artists and curators live in regional Queensland! Have you thought about organising for them to visit to enrich your exhibition hire? They are an available and skilled asset to our state - use them in your community!

Why don’t you have a go at getting some funding to travel them to you for a more personal and intimate exhibition experience for your audience? This could also be an artist talk or weekend workshop or a longer residency. Artslink Queensland is happy to supply a letter of support and any other help we can offer to make this happen.

Funding is available for regional venues and organisations from various state and federal government sources or foundations particularly established to support regional arts and community. There may also be another body in your town such as the Chamber of Commerce or organisers of an event such as a regional festival, local government etc., who could partner with you too.

Many regional venues also partner their exhibition hire with gatherings, openings or other special events for local community, individuals and groups who may have special interest in the particular themes, techniques or artists in the exhibition. These could include local arts and crafts groups or community sector representatives.

The Regional Arts Development Fund provides funding for professional arts and cultural development and heritage projects. RADF is a partnership between local councils and the Queensland Government to support local arts and culture. The successful and long-running RADF program gives communities the flexibility to shape their own arts and cultural priorities. Contact your Council for more information.

For more information about RADF (and other funding sources!!) explore the links at www.arts.qld.gov.au/funding/radf.html

RAF is an Australian Government initiative. Assistance is available across all art forms for projects which promote excellence in regional arts development, improve access to the Arts for regional Queenslanders, recognise cultural diversity and raise the profile of the arts within regional communities. There are two categories:

Quick Response Grants - Assistance up to $1,500 to individuals or organisations for projects that support artist’s professional development or demonstrate a community benefit.

Community Projects Program - For a larger idea! RAF assistance available for this category is minimum of $5,000 up to a maximum of $30,000.
