Hello Triumph Faithful!

We had a very good turnout at last month's meeting. We discussed the up and coming All British car show on the 26

th of September. I am in hopes

that all have been preparing their cars for this event and plan to attend the meet. We currently have a full roster of members volunteering to partici-pate at the concession for the meet. I received word from Lee Fox that they currently have 127 pre-registered for the show.

For those of you who did not attend Cars and Coffee on August 15th, we were very well represented by a wide variety of Triumphs. I would say there was at least 300 plus cars at the get together.

Recently, Miss Rose and I attended the monthly meeting of the north chap-ter of British Motor Club of New Orle-ans. I passed out registration forms and invited them to the upcoming meet in St. Louis. We discussed an upcom-ing meet in Natchez, Mississip-pi. Check their website for further de-tails.

Our next meeting will be held at the Corner Pub and Grill on Clarkson and Clayton Rd., Tuesday, September 15th.

Hope to see you all there.

- Jesse

Meeting Notes—18 August 2015

It was a dark and stormy night; mean-while, in a distant king-dom, St George was looking for a dragon…Slowly I turned (the last section courtesy of John Maneke).

Having paid our re-spects to George Ed-ward Bulwar-Lytton (see http://www.bulwer-lytton.com/), the St Lou-is Triumph Owners As-

sociation did in fact have a meeting in mid-August. It was in fact a dark and stormy night, but one Spitfire made it to the parking lot along with a Mini and a Corvette of some re-pute, while 27 Triumph faithful gathered inside the Wildwood Pub & Grill for great food and the usual tomfoolery.

Speaking of, one of the early arrivals was prospective new member Tom Puarro. Tom recently posted a question on the SLTOA Blog, stating he’d acquired a ’73 TR6 from Hawaii which wasn’t running and was looking for some guidance and expertise on what to do and what to expect. No surprise, Tom wound up in one of the TR6 corners of the gathering. Elsewhere, Bonnie and Jack David regaled one and all with tales of their re-cent tour of Yurp. Jack said that above and beyond the great driving and interesting cars, Europe proved educational (“If you see a sign that says ‘Hotel de Ville,’ it’s not a hotel. It’s city hall”). Jack added that they probably dropped something like 150 Euros (~$167 US) in tolls during their time on the continent. In their run through France, Italy, Germany and Australia, they saw one TR250, one MG, two Morgans plus a host of other cars.

At 7:09 PM, President Jesse closed the doors and started the meeting, stating that everyone either had their food or their bills and it was time to get on to the business at hand. First item, a good SLTOA turnout at the August Cars & Coffee, along with the usual assortment of interesting cars. The one that probably drew the most commentary was the 1957 Ferrari Berlinetta 250 TDF, which actually raced in one of the Tours de France during the decade, placing second. Estimated value for the car? Somewhere in the ballpark of $5-8 million. The ’48 Packard convertible also drew a lot of comments when it cruised into the parking lot.

El Presidente also congratulated the club on a most excellent SweatFest. John and Donna’s huge basement slot car track – still a work in progress (hmmm…just like most of the club’s Triumphs) – proved particularly entertaining.

Concerning the 26 September All British Car & Cycle Show, Steve Moore got the food permit and, as he put it, “It only took one day” (applause). Steve added the club was looking for two or three more volunteers to man stations at the food concessions.

For other upcoming events, Kathy Kresser, Ann Stark and Bonnie David are handling the preparations for the Christmas Party (more applause). More near term, concerning the 3-4 October overnighter to Fulton, MO, Bonnie said she’d called the motel, the Coun-try Hearth Inn & Suites, and their rep had said that while the sign-up deadline for the club room rates had passed, they’d still accept reservations at the rate. BOOK SOON!

Getting back to the ABCCS, pre-registration closes on 26 August; Lee Fox indicated the event had 90 cars registered and reminded everyone that the first 100 cars/owners get free event t-shirts. The county has promised to cut the grass this year (retort by Ste-phen Paur: “Get rid of the gophers!” Response from the floor: “Okay, who’s in charge of the gophers?”).

Next up, the treasurer’s report. Andy announced the club at $2907.08 in the till, but he was still waiting on the bill for our share of the SweatFest.

Discussion/commentary on additional upcoming events followed, including the 19-20 September Greentree Festival inn Kirkwood, with parade on the 19th (Lee Fox said he was driving in the parade) and car show on the 20th. The festival incorporates a large number of activities, a lot of food and “folk life” reenactors. Otherwise, still plenty of things to do between now and the end of the year, including the September and October Cars & Coffee gatherings and the ongoing Boeing Sports Car Club autocross series.

VTR 2015: Triumphs in the Heartland

by Kathy Kresser

Jam-packed and fun-filled best describes the Triumph week in Fon-tana, Wisconsin. The host of VTR, ISOA (Illinois Sports Owners Asso-ciation) ordered near-perfect weath-er for this gathering of Triumphs on the shores of Geneva Lake in the southeastern part of Wisconsin. There were activities to suit every-one’s enthusiasm plus the chance to talk with R.W. “Kas” Kastner of Vista, California. The R. W. "Kas" Kastner website posts:

Kas was a well-known production car driver in the late 1950's and class Cham-pion of the California Sports Car Club in 1959 as well as winner of the Championship for the SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) during that same year. The Champion-ships were won driving a 1958 TR3A Triumph. He was the Chief Instructor for the California Sports Car Club at the Riverside Race-way for several years and also the National Licensing Chairman for the SCCA. His experience in the automotive industry spans over 50 years. He has particular experience in the field of performance vehicles and automotive racing and racing team management.

The funkana was a big draw showcasing one’s unusual talents to the opposite end of the spectrum with the autocross requiring some skill and maneuvering abilities. SLTOA member Dave Massey took second in his autocross class.

The time, speed and distance rally can be challenging. One cou-ple made their first attempt at the TSD; they were out for one hour, could not find the first check point and called it a day. The gimmick rally and self-guided tours traveled the scenic and rustic country roads. Not to be missed for many was the ice cream run – need I say more? The boat excursion (no Triumph required) around a portion of Gene-va Lake gave viewers a good look at the beautiful homes and man-sions. Another non-car event was the photo competition where

SLTOA member Linda Massey took second place.

The VTR car show provides the opportunity for one to display one’s car in Participants Choice or Concours d’Elegance. Dave and Linda Massey received second in their Concours class for their 1957 TR3. SLTOA member Chris Kresser showed his 1959 TR3A in the Senior Class (a judged-only class).

There were several technical sessions including a detailed de-scription of the second restoration of TS1 (the prototype for the TR2). This gleaming pearl white car with geranium interior was restored by Macy’s Garage in Tipp City, Ohio. Other sessions included: transmis-sion rebuilding, distributor ignition systems, TR rear main seal and frame analysis. Karl Schmitt com-mented, “The tech sessions were above and beyond what is normal-ly expected. They were interesting and informative. I suspect at-tendees learned a few things.”

Bob Streepy, Co-Chairman for the VTR National, said, “The members of ISOA were very grati-fied that so many people chose to attend the event and hope that all of the attendees enjoyed their stays.”

See you next year October 3-7, 2016, when the VTR National moves to Pottsboro, Texas, on Lake Texoma.

Triumph Stag H.O.

Note: Steve Moore provided the photo of the “Triumph Stag H.O.”, to the left; he also photographed the data card on the car’s windshield:

When British Leyland produced the British Triumph Stag in 1970, sales figures were not quite up to expectations. Leyland then specu-lated that if they offered an optional performance model, that would boost sales . They enlisted the help of John DeLoirean (of GM fame for the GTO and others) to oversee the program. What they hadn’t realized was that Mr. DeLorean was at the peak of his cocaine habit and was completely stoned 24 hours a day and hadn’t slept in over a year.

The result of the project was the Stag H.O. In DeLorean fashion, all of the H.O.s were to be painted chalky faded white. Sales were well below expectations and by the best accounts, they only sold one. It was purchased by Mr. E. Knievel in 1973 and used for weekend drives over canyons.

Mr. Knievel subsequently sold the car and it has passed on to several owners since then. The car had some notoriety when it played the villain in the Disney movie, “Herbie Gets His Ass Kicked.”

It is now owned by ISOA member Bob Steele, who is restoring it in hopes of bringing it to the New Glarus hill jump in future years.

Congrats to:

Chris & Kathy Kresser—Senior Division, Concours d’Elegance, 3rd, 1959 TR3A

Dave Massey—TR2/TR3 Class, Con-cours d’Elegance, 2nd place, 1957 TR3. 4th place, Autocross

And thanks to the Illinois Sports Owners Association for putting on a great VTR national!

Report from Scotland

Craig,

Here is a Jensen Interceptor at the Carfest North. The guy seated behind it rebuilt the orange one in the background, sold it, bought the green one as a wreck and rebuilt it. He was quite content to sit there for hours and talk about the 7.2 litre V8 and the "Torque Flite" transmission. All good US engineering – Andrew

Wow – Did the JI's come with that power plant stock?? 7.2 L's! – Craig

Craig - The JI came with a 383 cu in (6.3 litre) then this was followed by the 440 cu in (7.2l) with the three- speed torqueflite. They then developed the FF four wheel drive with the big Chrysler engine. Fantastic and way ahead of its time. I drove one in 1969.

I dread to think of the fuel costs in the UK with the JI in the 60s and 70s. I guess 8mpg would have been average at a time when 30 mpg was thought of as expensive.

Very desirable car at the time. Great V8 rumble from the exhaust. The company is no more went bust like so many others – Andrew

More Field Reports...

As mentioned elsewhere, Bonnie and Jack David recently completed a grand tour of Europe, including the nations of France, Germany, Austria and Italy. And, sure ‘nuff, they saw a good variety of neat old cars; they shared the photos at the last meeting. Jack noted they also saw a TR250 and one MG during their travels.

As for Stephen and Ronnie Paur, they too have continued their interna-tional (or at the very least, overseas) quest for LBCs and other exotic means of transportation. Here’s a photo they took from their last trip to Hawaii (hey, it’s a tough job, but the search for British cars requires some level of sacri-fice!).

Finally, as this edition of Exhaust Notes goes to press (finally!), the editor and his bride Kelli are way out west, searching for LBCs in several locations in New Mexico, Arizona and Nevada. YFE

was pleased to announce he found two really good looking Spitfires on US 54 north of Alamogordo, NM; he suspects they might require some work.

A lot of the old Triumph promotional photos are out there floating around. Your editorial staff found this one which apparently dates from the late 1970s.

The car’s a Spitfire 4 (aka the Mk 1); the lady with the car is international film star Tunita del Mundo. According to the minimal infor-mation that came with the photo, the shot was taken in Zaragoza, Spain.

Pretty cool, eh? If anyone else has a promo photo of a Triumph, fell free to scan it and send it in for publication.

Admit It, You Want

These Cars! Concerning the 3rd annual Veterans Day Drive, scheduled for 8 November, it was pointed out the MG Club of St Louis would hold their annual fall colors drive that same Sunday. MGCStL Chairman Lee said his club would also attempt to collection donations for a veterans organization. Vets Day Drive organizer Mark Morgan said the word would go out to the other member clubs of the St Louis Sports Car Council that the drive to Perryville and back was open to all sports and special interest cars. Hopefully that’ll generate a good-sized turnout of vehicle and participants (afterwards, two members stepped up and made the first donations for the event).

Debate followed on convincing former or out-of-date mem-bers to re-up with the club. One member suggested contact-ing all of those who didn’t renew with a “we miss you” email, particularly keyed towards the long-time SLTOA members who failed to renew for 2015. Discussion and strategery con-tinues.

Finally, John Maneke announced he had the latest Moss Motors catalogues for the TR2/3/4 and TR250/6, free to who-ever wanted them.

Next meeting, Corner Pub & Grill at Clarkston and Clayton, next to Lucky’s Market. Plenty of space inside for the mem-bers and plenty outside for Triumphs. And with that an-nouncement, Prez Jesse rang down the curtain, at 7:30 PM.

Meeting (Continued from page 4)

Yea, though I park in the valley between Ford and Dodge….

Here are two more recent posts from Bring A Trailer (http://bringatrailer.com); lately it’s been somewhat hard to keep up, what with all of the Triumphs and other LBCs popping up for sale around the country. However, these two definitely qualified as stand-outs. First up, a 1949 Triumph 2000 TDA, described by BAT as follows:

This 1949 Triumph 2000 TDA looks all the world like a miniature Rolls Royce and is one of about 16,000 made between 1946 and 1954. Bodied in alu-minum due to post-war steel supply shortages, this particular car is described as an older restoration that’s been with the seller for 20 years. It looks very nice in photos, the ad further noting an im-pressively low ~40k miles. Bodied by Mulliners of Bir-mingham (which would become a part of Standard-Triumph less than a decade later), the saloon features an attractive mix of sharp edges and graceful curves, though the very upright greenhouse and semi-detached trunk must have looked very dated compared to the much more modern Standard Vanguard with which it shares an engine.

Featuring a 3-speed column shift gearbox with syn-chromesh on all forward gears and as many as 68 horse-power on tap, the car will probably struggle in modern traffic regardless of its partially aluminum construction. Perhaps best driven around town, this small luxury car is sure to draw attention wherever it goes…better be pre-pared with a bottle of Gray Poupon in the glovebox at all times because everyone’s going to think it’s a Roller.

The car went up for bid in Bossier City, Louisiana, with a buy-it-now price of $28,500. Next up, something we in SLTOA are familiar with: a GT6 with V8 engine. Again, BAT provides the details:

This 1971 Triumph GT6 is the first we have ever seen with an all-aluminum Buick V8 swap. nt is said to be original and the fit and finish looks very good. Unusual for a swap like this, the sell-er says that the car has “No issues whatsever,” and also that the car has been owned by the same person for 44 years.

The interior looks clean with nice wood veneer and what looks like an aftermarket tach in the stock location. The transmission is a 5-speed of unspecified make. Perhaps a T5? The engine fitment looks mostly clean but we would want to get a look at what suspension and sub-frame modifications were made.

This one was for sale in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, via Craigslist for $12,500.
