Attendance Policy Notice! The district has an attendance policy which is aimed at reducing critically-high absenteeism. Under normal conditions, the policy limits absences to 10 days per semester, with exceptions for special circumstances. Veteran’s Appreciation The National Honor Society would like to invite all Veterans and their spouses for coffee and rolls on Monday, November 12th, in the cafeteria at the Exeter site at 9 AM. First Grade News – Mrs. Lott First graders visited the Senior Center on October 10th. The students paired up with the seniors and read from their reading books. I want to thank the Seniors for taking time out of their day and listening to the students practice reading their stories. We will be visiting the senior center the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 2:30 P.M. Different activities are planned each month. In writing this year we are learning and practicing the 6-Traits of writing which include ideas, organization, word choice, sentence fluency, voice, and conventions. In first grade, of course, they are just being introduced to the traits. We are already writing short sentences about different topics and practicing the conventions of capital letters, periods, and spaces between words. By the end of the year, they should be writing some nice short stories. Second Grade News – Mrs. Weber Each month Second Graders have an opportunity to participate in Book Club. Students read the selected book and discuss their favorite characters and favorite parts of the book while enjoying lunch together. A different student is the facilitator of the monthly meeting; keeping the discussion on topic by asking questions. Students can freely discuss what they liked and disliked about the book. At the end of each book club session, an activity related to the book is completed. In September, students read The Song and Dance Man. After meeting, students watched a video to see an animated vaudeville show. October’s selection is Curious George Rides a Bike. Sixth Grade News – Mrs. Polak The Exeter-Milligan sixth grade class is very busy with a new Math curriculum and trading off between science and social studies. Saxon Math (Course One) is a bit different than the other elementary grades. We still do our daily "Power-Up" sheets that include reviewing math facts, mental math, and problem solving. The instruction focuses on one or two bits of information with some guided practice. Then Mrs. Polak does some of the homework problems for us, and then we usually have time to work on the rest of the problems. Whatever we don't get done in class, we take home to finish. We began social studies with how we know what we think we know about ancient civilizations with a brief study of Archaeology. Mrs. Polak even went to the Nebraska Archaeological Society's Annual Artifact

Show in Seward and shared some of what we did in class. She even came home with a ribbon! Our study of Ancient Egypt included projects; some of us made a sarcophagus for a pharaoh, some made Egyptian temples, and some made tools the Egyptians might have used. Others did a drawing of a royal barge that would have gone up and down the Nile River, or a picture of a carving that appears on a wall. We are studying physical science this year, and are having fun with Newton's Laws of Motion and demonstrating some of the vocabulary terms. We just finished trying different lubricants to reduce the friction between our little pipe-cleaner-and-craft-stick skiers and a plexiglass slope. Some worked and some didn't, but we learned to use the right terms to describe what exactly happened. The E-M sixth grade is also learning to diagram sentences, write critiques, and make nouns plural, and possessive. We will begin a financial education program in the computer lab after the first of November, courtesy of the Farmer's and Merchant's Bank of Milligan and the First National Bank in Exeter. Mrs. Polak's reading class began the year with an environmental novel, The Talking Earth, and we liked it so much we are now reading another survival tale, Touching Spirit Bear. It's going to be a challenge getting everything done that we want to do this year in Mrs. Polak's room, but it will be fun learning! News from 4th Grade – Mrs. S. Mueller Thank you to the parents that took the time out of their busy schedule to visit with me at conferences. I enjoyed seeing all of you. In science, we are learning about mixtures and solutions through “experiments”. We made a solution of water and kool-aid. We also separated a mixture of munchie mix into its different parts. In social studies, we are learning about the differences and similarities between the regions in the United States. We are also comparing all of them to Nebraska and exploring which region we would like to live in the most using the Ipad app called Sock Puppet. They can pick the characters, backgrounds and objects to tell each other about their choice. In math, we are learning about elapsed time and making multiplication sentences out of addition sentences. In writing, we are working on blogging on the Ipad’s. I give them a topic and they have to comment on my question. They enjoy using the Ipads. Reminder: Oct. 31st, Halloween Party from 2-3pm. Congrats to the Softball and Girls Golf teams for a great season! Good luck to the Volleyball and Football teams as they finish their season!

3rd Grade News – Mrs. Pohl This last month we have been very busy in 3rd grade. We received our first letters from our pen pals from Pennsylvania and we have since returned letters back to them. We have also had the chance to Skype with them on a few different occasions to better get to know them. It is truly amazing how small the world seems with all of the technology these days. In social studies we have been studying the communities of Exeter and Milligan. We have talked about rural communities as well as suburban and urban and how we fit into the communities around us, the state, and the country. In the next month or so, we will gear our chapter towards the election and government. We will learn about our local government and their role in our lives and touch on the presidential election as well. This will be a great learning experience for them to see the process of an election first hand and to understand the importance of our government. November will be the second month for Book It so please look for the tracking calendar in Friday Folders. I appreciate all those that are participating and encouraging reading at home. If you have any questions or comments, please don’t hesitate to contact me. FCS News- Adult Living- Students have been learning about defense mechanisms and how people use them in daily life. Stress and depression were also discussed. Students had the opportunity to experience some stress reduction techniques that they can use for the rest of their lives. We also discussed the health problems associated with stress and depression. Students will soon be working on their homeless project. Each student will be able to construct their “home”, create their persona and research statistics, reasons for the homelessness of society, and what society can do to combat the problem. FCS 7- Students have focused on learning about themselves and how when we know ourselves and understand our character, personality and abilities we can become a better person, friend, family member and community member. Students have written poems, made imovies, created skits, created a graffiti wall, worked in small groups and numerous other activities to involve the chapters topics. We are currently working on communication skills and developing them and learning about the importance of listening and hearing have in the communication process. Foods and Nutrition- Cultural Awareness has been our focus. Each class has had the prior opportunity to introduce their own culture through a detailed visual, audio selection and food preparation. Now the students are taking it one step higher and creating a cultural awareness of a culture that was not covered by a classmate and integrating tablescapes, cultural awareness presentation, food lab, cost analysis and work schedule with team mates. Exploratory FCS 9- Students have finished up their study of decision making and conflict resolution. They will be using these skills as they investigate a career that they are interested in and taking a look at the rewards and demands of the career, job outlook, cost of education, education requirements, courses needed in high school to prepare them for their post secondary classes, work conditions, benefits of the career and salaries associated with their chosen careers. Child Development- Students have been asked the question, “Are you ready to be a parent?”. We will answer that question by implementing the “Reality Babies” and giving them a small taste of what parenthood could be like. We have discussed the type of parenting represented throughout our society and demands that go along with the role of a parent.

FCS II- Students are actively engaged in the EverFi program that is sponsored by the Farmers Merchant Bank of Milligan and First National Bank of Exeter. Through the use of this program, students gain money management skills in the areas of savings, checking, money investment, payment, interest rates, credit cards, knowing their credit score, higher education cost, renting vs. owning, taxes and insurance and consumer fraud. This program is electronic and it allows the students to complete each module at their pace and must score a certain percentage before the program allows them to advance. Thank you so much to both financial institutions for allowing our students the chance to experience this educational program. FCCLA NEWS 33 members attending District #4 Leadership Conference which was held at Central Community College in Hastings on Oct. 3rd. Over 400 FCCLA members from our District #4 were introduced to the guest speaker, Mike Donahue of R5 Productions. Mike’s message was a powerful and informative session on “Walking in someone else’s shoes” and the importance of realizing that one does not know what individual’s experience in their personal lives and we need to be aware that we may not know things and that our actions could be harmful to them or spark a not so pleasant memory. We need to be more empathetic and understanding of differences. Members than were able to attend sessions like: Crossroads Homeless Panel, Knowing Your Strengths: Awareness and Application, Women’s Prison Inmates, Relationships, Get up and Move- Dance session, Media Advertising, Peer Education, Chapter Treasures, and STAR project introduction. Exeter-Milligan’s District officer, Toni Bossaller presided over the opening and closing ceremony as our District #4 President. Erica Yound, Taylor Erdkamp, Megan Waldron, Toni Bossaller also assisted with sessions throughout the day. Events in October included: Trick or Treat so that Others May Eat, Roadside Clean up- 2 miles east and 2 miles west of Exeter along Hwy. 6, and Initial STAR project meetings. Events in November include: One Act Play Dessert Luncheon, breakout session with our guest speaker on Nov. 16th, STAR work dates. Mrs. Vossler FCS Educator/FCCLA Adviser Picture Retakes Retakes will be on Monday, November 12th beginning at 8:30 AM. Retakes will be taken at no charge if: eyes are closed, flaw in processing or photographer error or if you were absent on picture day. If you just didn’t like your picture there is a $5.00 fee payable at the time you have your retake.

E-M Staff Participates in Lee National Denim Day 31 staff members participated in the Lee National Denim Day on Tuesday, October 9. Staff members contributed $5 in exchange for wearing jeans to work that day. $155 was raised and will be sent to the American Cancer Society via Lee National Denim Day. Financial Aid Workshop Exeter-Milligan will hold a FINANCIAL AID WORKSHOP on THURSDAY, NOV. 1, at 2:30 p.m. This workshop will be conducted by EducationQuest. If you have any questions about financial aid, mark your calendar, and plan to attend.

Thank You! To the kind and generous people in the Exeter and Milligan communities: Last summer I heard the words, “may be cancer” and then the word, “cancer” alone; a scary and unpleasant word. At first I kept it to myself and told very few, until “chemo” was introduced to my vocabulary. If I was going to beat the cancer, chemo would become a realty. At that point, I realized that not just a few would know but everyone would know because I would lose my hair. The time came when I decided to tell my students. What a tough day that it was! I started by asking if anyone knew what a bad hair day was or if they ever had one. Then I asked what the worst hair day would be? During third period, one student said, “having no hair”; so I shared, “that is what is going to happen to me”! Last Tuesday night I was amazed and honored with the support from the Exeter-Milligan Public Schools, and the people that “grace” these two towns. Mrs. Darcy White told me that the volleyball girls wanted to do a pink out for me at the last home game. I wasn’t aware of the T-shirts being sold until I was getting groceries at Greg’s one Sunday morning. To say the least, I was a little embarrassed. Then later I heard about the bake sale. The number of T-shirts sold was close to 200, and the bake sale was very successful. I want to thank everyone for their generosity, and the overwhelming support I have been given at this time in my journey in life. I especially want to thank Mrs. Darcy White, the volleyball team, Mrs. Mary Lou Vossler, Mr. Paul Sheffield, and Mr. Lin Schlueter. Thanks for your prayers and acts of kindness, Mrs. Judy K. View from the From Office I must not have been paying attention when we were discussing careers back when I was in high school. I was probably in my happy place, wondering what life would be like when I was retired at 45, living on a tropical island. Instead, here I am, VOLUNTEERING to accompany 32 young ladies to a district FCCLA gathering. To top it off, I was driving the bus. This was definitely not what I had in mind 27 years ago when I was embarking on my collegiate career. But you know what, I wouldn't want it any other way. At the district gathering, we had the opportunity to hear Mike Donahue from r5 Productions. His message was straight forward and to the point. The point that caught my attention was he kept referring to the top shelf. The question posed was, " Are we reaching for that top shelf - the shelf that is harder to reach, but has the greater reward? Or are we settling for the bottom shelf - the shelf that's the easiest to reach and doesn't push us." As I looked around the gym, I saw many heads nodding up and down. Not because they were dozing off, but because they agreed. It was refreshing to see a few hundred teenagers agreeing about pushing themselves and not settling for less than their best. Are we, as adults, reaching for that top shelf? Are we taking the chance, stepping out, pushing ourselves to reach a higher goal or are we settling for the easy way out? Any team that wants to reach the ultimate goal, the championship, has to keep reaching for that top self. If they settle for the lower shelf, the easy way, they will never get to the top. We as individuals must do this also. Our goal may not be a state championship, but we have to set our sights high in order to make that achievement. Whether it be wanting to lose that extra 30 pounds or gain that extra interest on our investment. If we take the easy way, we get the easy outcome. With a little extra hard work, we can get that greater reward. As the weather changes and we get closer to the holiday season, shouldn't we push ourselves to reach higher? Why not step out on that ledge and reach for that top shelf. Yes, we could fall, but even if we do we will land pretty high up. I have found myself asking Haylee if she is reaching for that top shelf. One day the reply was,"Yes I am dad. Are you?" Well stated young lady. Well, stated. As Casey Kasem used to say when he wrapped up his Top 40 countdown, "Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars." Reach for that top shelf. Push yourself just a little bit harder. The reward is worth it.

Report Cards Have A New Look Powerschool is a great service that provides parents with letter grades and percentages for each subject area that is being taught to their child(ren). However, there is not a lot of explanation as to the content of what students are learning. For that reason, teachers have created report cards that will better reflect what is being taught in each classroom during each nine week grading period. Although it is very important that parents continue to check Powerschool to track the progress of their child(ren), hopefully the new report card formats will give more specific information that cannot be seen by simply logging onto Powerschool. Progress reports will go out every nine weeks. The variance will be the skills being taught during each nine week period as well as the report card format from grade level to grade level. Please contact me or your child’s teacher if you have any questions. – Mrs. Kroll

It would be helpful if those students that live in Exeter and plan to eat breakfast would do so at the Exeter site at 7:35. There is very limited time for those students to eat breakfast at the Milligan site and still get to class on time. This will allow teachers to get classes started

Kindness – Give it away and it will always come back

These are the words that have recently been chosen for a poster that is displayed in the school cafeteria at the Milligan site. After having had the character building Youth Frontiers organization come to our school in August, students have been working towards weekly character challenges. The challenges have focused on acts of kindness and the appropriate way to treat others. Grades 3-6 have an assembly Monday mornings to determine what the weekly challenge is going to be. During this assembly the floor is opened up to discussion about things that are going well and areas of concern. Paper boomerangs are then given to students to pass out to peers who they see (or hear) meeting the challenge for the week. Names of students who meet the challenges are placed on a boomerang and boomerangs are displayed next to the poster whose caption, “Kindness – Give it away and it will always come back to you,” was created by Josie Kresak and Kate Jansky. Students are learning that kindness really is like a boomerang, if you throw it out there, it will come back to you in one form or another.

Technology Opportunity for Patrons

Patrons of the district that are interested in learning about some new technologies, such as Pinterest, Twitter, apps, blogs, QR codes (like the one to the right) etc, will soon have this opportunity. If you would like to have some fun and see how these technologies work, you can fill out the attached survey and return it to either school. The elementary teachers and I are very interested in helping parents and patrons learn and understand all the great technology things that are out there and that can be beneficial to all whether it be for fun or for work. Plum Creek Literacy Festival On Friday, September 21, 2012, the 7th and 8th grade English classes attended the Plum Creek Literacy festival in Seward, NE. We began the morning by splitting into three groups to attend presentations by author Clare Vanderpool, illustrator Jarrett Krosoczka, and “A Student’s Life in Drama.” Our second session, attended by all our students, was a presentation by author Gary Schmidt. After the festival, the students reflected on what they learned and liked about their presenters. The following summaries are a compilation of their responses. Jarrett Krosoczka (J. J. K.) J. J. K. started writing in the 3rd grade, and drew pictures for all his stories. His goal was to have his own picture book published. He began by trying to get his illustrations published, and sent an original drawing on postcards to 80 different publishers. Jarrett’s illustrations were rejected, but never gave up! Finally, Random House contracted him to illustrate a book. He is most famous for his Lunch Lady books, which are graphic novels. He is married, and about to celebrate his 5th wedding anniversary. Clare Vanderpool. Clare Vanderpool has four kids, and lives in Kansas. Moon Over Manifest was her first book and her family was very proud of her. It took 16 years to write the book, and three different tries to come up with a title. It was awarded the Newbery Award. This book took place in the Great Depression, and was based on a saying from another book. Some of the characters were based on some of her family members. Clare always wanted to be a writer. She told us that she writes about her memories. Her first book was rejected, which almost made her give up.

Black Box Theater The actors acted like they were in second grade. They told us to be kind and include everybody. They also told us to try new things and not to call people names. They recited poems in the middle of the play. Gary Schmidt Gary Schmidt used stories to explain his views about writing. He told a story about American soldiers who survived a German attack, in WW2, to illustrate how good stories leave the reader with lots of questions. He also told a story about men saving a whale to share how the best stories always have surprises. He didn’t plan on being a writer, but now writes and is a college professor. His book Wednesday Wars is based on his experiences with his least favorite grade school teacher. His advice to writers is “slow down.” He writes all his books on a typewriter, which gives him time to slow down and think about what he’s writing.
