‘Flat out like a lizard drinking’ a cracking saying picked up from a colleague in Northamptonshire that springs to mind for the month of May. All aspects of work have been busy, with the market operating to full capacity on a number of occasions both on Mondays and a Friday, a terrific sight to see. Whilst the professional team have been busy completing and submitting the ever important Basic Payment Scheme applications and a variety of other professional matters. The weather as always remains a continued topic of conversation when out on farm or talking to market clients, with only a few stating the need for rain is not required. Throughout May various areas received localised heavy showers which gave a life line to many spring crops but also greatly helped the prospect of winter growing varieties and the grass ground. Generally first cut silage has reported reasonably well, with winter crops in particularly the barley looking strong. Let’s hope for a bit of low pressure on the charts providing a good soaking throughout the early part of June which will just help on grass yields consequently giving confidence in the beef ring. Professionally the Kivells team have been embraced with the Basic Payment Scheme submitting a staggering total across the South West. With regards to the application process, the online system now works relatively well, with the transfer of entitlements and land parcels being actioned on the click of a button, rather than the mundane process of RLE1 forms and the back logged time it takes to activate the required land changes. Moving forward it is important to state that Basic Payment Scheme matters don’t stop after the 15th May. Having completed and submitted the required applications, attention then turns to queries from previous year claims. Often in the form of loss of entitlements, payment queries or financial penalties that have been applied for no apparent reason. An occurrence that I am often involved in relates to the Michampton case surrounding moorland entitlements and additional payments. If you have any queries on the BPS payments or Michampton case matters surrounding additional moorland payments please get in touch, we can help! Summer is often the time of year where farms and land are launched onto the market for sale. Although the land market appears quieter across all regions with concerns over ongoing political engagements, we have a few farms and small holdings in the pipeline that should be launched within the year. Putting your property to the open market isn’t the only method in selling. To date there have been a number of occasions whereby I have been involved with sellers looking to deal privately, selling to your neighbour on a price that both parties are content with. If you’re looking to buy or you’re looking to sell, please contact us. Our team across the South West will be delighted to come and meet with you. With regards to additional payments our attention now swings to the Countryside Stewardship. The deadline for receiving the application packs has now passed with all submissions needing to be completed by the 31st July. Uptake and expressed interest within has increased this year with clients taking the opportunity to receive additional income and improve farm infrastructure through the use of grants. My thoughts remain unmoved on the matter, the Mid-Tier Countryside Stewardship is an additional payment that will work for some farm steads but not for those who are reasonably intensive and unwilling to alter current farming practices. If you have applied for an application pack and require advice on the best options going forward please contact your nearest office. The Mid-Tier CCS first started in 2015 and our team have now completed a large proportion of application consequently finding out which options best suit individual farms.

Throughout the Spring I was involved with a number of electricity pole and wire renewals within the Kingsbridge area. The company entering the land to renew the various apparatus unfortunately entered at a point of harsh

weather damaging crops and creating land rutting and compaction. It is imperative that you as the farmer are

compensated fairly for the damages caused. It is often the case the company entering your land require entry for

very little in return, however next time you require connecting to the electrical apparatus be sure to expect a hefty

bill. As agents, our fees are covered by the companies entering the land and we ensure a fair payment is made in

relation to crop loss, business disruption and the essential reinstatement.

Standing straw will be the next topic of conversation with our annual sale set for the end of June. This time last

year drought conditions started to set in and stocks of straw from the previous winter had been used meaning for

a strong trade. Going forward for this year although we are perhaps not expecting such a strong trade, stocks

throughout the country have been used and from speaking to colleagues in the Midlands and East Anglia cereal

crops are starting to stain under the current weather conditions ultimately having an effect on yield. On June 28th it

appears we will be putting to auction 1500 acres plus of Winter Wheat, Barley and Oats in and around Exeter and

the surrounding districts. Catalogues for the sale will be available shortly, if you require one on the kitchen table

please get in touch.
