Welcome to the latest, bumper issue of our Future
magazine. In this edition, we cover a wide range of
topics that should have something of interest for every
type of reseller. As the year draws to a close, we look
ahead to some of the big trends highlighted by analyst
Gartner in their Top 10 Strategic Technology Trends
for 2016 and what this means for the channel. Big
trends generally point to big opportunities so dont
forget to take a look at what could be good for your
business in the next 12 months. We also believe that
this time of year is perfect for a little reflection and a
spot of planning so our article on How to start the
year strong has some valuable tips to help you focus
on setting realistic goals for your business.
We feature two areas of technology that are often,
surprisingly, overlooked by resellers. The market for
power and cooling continues to grow and equals the
size of the market for IT equipment. By taking advantage
of our vendor portfolio in these categories and some of
the services and support available from Exertis, it could
make a big difference to your profitability and keep
your customer from going elsewhere for these two
essential components in an infrastructure sale.
At the other end of the spectrum, we discuss whether the
smartphone will indeed become the mobile technology
of the future, driven by consumer behaviour, and how
organisations need to rise to the security challenge
that this is creating for businesses of all size. Of course,
Microsoft is never out of the news for very long and
following the launch of Windows 10, you can now look
at some of the key features we believe will be important
in Microsoft Windows Server 2016.
You will also find an article on why SMBs are a great
target for VDI solutions and how Dell Networking and
Dell SonicWall form a perfect partnership for resellers
looking for a wireless networking solution for their
customers.
Finally, on behalf of everyone at Exertis, I would like to
thank you for your continued business and wish you a
happy Christmas, and a profitable new year. Until then,
enjoy the read.

NEWS IN BRIEF
DELL BUYS EMC TO CREATE ENTERPRISE POWERHOUSE IN TECH HISTORYS LARGEST ACQUISITION
Dell, the privately owned and worlds third largest PC manufacturer recently announced its intention to buy EMC tapping into the fast growing market for managing and storing data as well as acquiring other EMC assets like virtualisation specialist VMWare. The deal estimated to be a staggering $67bn is the largest in tech history.
Dells chief executive, Michael Dell, said the combined entities will be set for rapid growth. The combination of Dell and EMC creates an enterprise solutions powerhouse bringing our customers industry-leading innovation across their entire technology environment, he said.
The new company brings together Dells enterprise server range, EMCs storage offerings, and the converged infrastructure of EMC-owned VCE, as well as virtualization via VMware. On top of hardware offerings, the new business will have a significant stake in selling security via EMC-owned RSA and Dells SecureWorks, as well as big data software and services via EMC and VMware spinoff Pivotal.Dell believes that the move will help ensure that the company has a dominant position in the technology market If you think of the four big pillars of IT today, you have server, storage, virtualisation and PC. Our new company will be an absolute leader in all four of thoseIn terms of their joint pool of hundreds of thousands of enterprise customers, Dell believes the deal will help it cover all business bases, with Dell selling into small and medium-sized enterprises and EMC to the large corporates.
According to Michael Dell, the acquisition will see the combined companies positioned as a leader in the IT of tomorrow -- serving the third platform of enterprise technologies and helping companies transform their business through software-defined datacenter, hybrid cloud, mobility, and security.
MIXED FORTUNES FOR NOTEBOOKS AND TABLETS IN Q4
Global notebook shipments (not including detachable 2-in-1 products), are expected to drop 17.5% year on year and 5.3% sequentially in the fourth quarter according to the latest Digitimes Research quarterly notebook report. Tablets fare better with a 15.9% increase on the quarter but not enough to compensate for an overall yearly decline of 22.6%. Digitimes predicts 58.7 million tablets will be shipped globally in the 4th quarter. Apple will account for 23.9% and Samsung 17.9% of the 58.7 million shipments. 30.3% will be 7 with 26.2% in the 9 form factor. Android dominates the OS with a 56.8% share, followed by iOS at 36.4% and Windows 6.9%.
Sources believe smartphones and wearable devices will be the main gifts for the year-end holidays, and notebooks, lacking new innovations, are unlikely to attract much in sales except models such as the MacBook, iPad Pro and Microsofts Surface series.
IT TO BENEFIT FROM PUBLIC SECTOR OUTSOURCING
Political stability following the election and the need for local councils to review their spending has had a positive effect on public sector outsourcing.
Outsourcing spend more than trebled between July and September compared to the second quarter of 2015, with 1.77bn committed to IT deals alone, according to new research from analyst Nelson Hall. The UK Quarterly Outsourcing Index showed that the majority of spend was attributable to central government for a mixture of multi-scope IT infrastructure deals and shared-service agreements for back-office services. The 69% year-on-year increase in spending was similar to the 67% increase in local government, for the same period, with councils largely procuring a mixture of multi-scope IT outsourcing contracts focused on new infrastructure, along with deals for revenues and benefits, customer-services and payroll.
Volume sales of notebooks, desktops and PC workstations through distributors declined by -3.3% year-on-year in the third quarter of 2015 across Western Europe according to data published by CONTEXT, the European IT market analysis company.
A year ago, the same quarter saw a +22.2% year-on-year rise in PC sales as XP-migration demand and the launch of low-end, Bing-based notebooks boosted growth. The quarterly result was impacted by a strong prior year performance for the same period, Euro currency issues and efforts to reduce inventory by distributors. Whilst performance varied in Europe, the UK was less impacted by currency fluctuations and posted an 11.2% year on year growth in PC sales through distribution.
GOOGLE REFUTES RUMOURS OF CHROME OS AND ANDROID MERGER
Following a report in the Wall Street Journal it was widely reported in the news that Google planned to fold its Chrome operating system into Android. Not so says Google.
Googles Chrome OS runs on laptop and desktop computers, and has gained some penetration in the education sector. Android powers 1.4 billion smartphones, tablets, and watches. If the report was accurate the next generation of Android would run on personal computers as well as mobile devices. It would also give PC users access to third party apps from the Google Play market place. The two platforms would therefore benefit from combining their best features.
Combining two operating systems, one designed for a larger screen and the other for mobile devices is a similar approach to Microsofts strategy with Windows 10 which runs across computers, tablets, smartphones and the Xbox game console. However, Apple has maintained that it wants to keep iOS, the software that powers its iPhones and iPads, separate from its Mac OS software for PCs.
Which route Google will choose remains to be seen but for the minute its pure speculation.
Robotic Snippets Asustek is expected to unveil its medical care robot products
in 2016 Xiaomis subsidiary Ninebot has recently announced its in-
house-developed self-balancing two-wheel electric vehicle based on solutions acquired from Segway
Intel, Sony, Google and Samsung Electronics have also invested heavily in robot-related businesses. Many of the robot products available in the market have adopted Intels RealSense technology

According to IDC, the channel has the opportunity to cash in on a $3.5bn security and storage windfall when new EU data protection regulations come into force early next year. EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is designed to standardise laws governing data protection across the region. Businesses handling EU citizens data will have two years in which to achieve compliance.
GDPR changes the game for any company dealing in the personal data of EU citizens, said Duncan Brown, European security research director at IDC. Firms will struggle to be compliant within two years without the assistance of technology, and so we expect a major boost to security and storage sales in areas supporting compliance.IDC predicts that by 2019 the opportunity will be worth $1.8bn for security software and $1.7bn in storage software.

MICROSOFT ON TRACK WITH MILEAGE APP
Microsoft has acquired Mobile Data Labs, developers of the popular mileage tracking app MileIQ.
The MileIQ app, which is available for iOS and Android but not for Windows Phone takes advantage of sensors in mobile devices to capture, log and calculate business miles for tax-deduction purposes. According to Microsofts blog post, MileIQ has more than one million users and has been the top-grossing finance app in the iTunes store for the last 20 months. MileIQ is said to be aimed primarily at SMBs providing better allocation of travel costs that can be billed against specific projects. It isnt currently available in the UK.
